9. 1. This is when an egg is taken
from a woman’s ovaries and
in a glass tube it is fertilised
with a man’s sperm
2. It is then placed in a special
solution designed to
nurture the egg as it begins
to divide.
3. Then the fertilised egg or
embryo is implanted into
the woman’s uterus and
hopefully she becomes
pregnant.
4. This is also known as a
test-tube baby

 IVF is a scientific method of
making a woman pregnant,
which does not involve sex.
 Conception occurs by the
sperm and egg being
fertilised in a test tube

has helped many couples who
were infertile to have a child
 IVF is very expensive in the
UK it costs between 4 and 8
thousand pounds
 The NHS allow infertile
couples to have 3 attempts at
IVF without paying if;
 The mother is between 23
and 39, one partner is
infertile or has been
diagnosed with a fertility
problem.

13.  Elizabeth Adeney became the
oldest woman in Britain to have
a baby. She was 66.
 In 2009 she paid for IVF
treatment in the Ukraine using a
donor egg and donor sperm.
 No British clinic was prepared to
treat her because of her age
 She runs her own business so
hired a nanny when she returned
to England to look after her
baby.
 Why is this story
controversial?

14. FOR
 Everyone should have the
right to be a parent
 I’ve earned the money, so I
can spend it however I
choose
 I have been married for 5
years and we desperately
want a baby. The chance of
IVF treatment on the NHS
is a lifeline to us.
AGAINST
 A child is a gift from God
not a right. If you cannot
have that gift you cannot
buy it!
 There are enough people in
the world anyway. Why
should we waste money
artificially creating more?
 Think what 4000 pounds
could do to help starving in
the developing world.

couples and we should use it.
 Some accept IVF if the sperm
and the egg belong to the
biological parents
 Some accept IVF as they
believe it is the most
compassionate thing to do for
