Siddipet
City of Temples and beautiful Handlooms
Siddipet silk sarees which are
very famous and is available at
wholesale and retail in the market
and one can easily purchase
Siddipet silk sarees.
Temples
The Lord Shiva temple, known
as Kotilingeswar temple, was
constructed by Sadguru Sree
Madanananda Saraswati, and is
located near the Medak X Road.
Sri Sharabeshwaralayam is
another temple which is famous
for the sculptures and the deity
is of Lord Shiva. There is also a
Santhoshi Mata temple.
Handlooms
Siddipet has traditional looms,
whose design is more than a
century-old. Basking under the
glory on par with the weavers of
other places, Siddipet weave is
popularly known as tie and dye
weave. The uniqueness lies in
Siddipet is a small city and a municipality in Medak
district, Telangana, India. It is the biggest town in
the Medak district and is 104 KM away from the
Hyderabad, capital city of Telangana and 86 KM
away from Secunderabad identified with Hyderabad
as twin city. Siddipet is well connected with road.
Siddipet is well known for its handloom products.

them together. The fabric
used for weaving in Siddipet
is cotton. Increasingly, the
colours themselves are
from natural sources and
their blends. The count
used in weaving in Siddipet
handloom saree is 120
/ 2. Previously the main
handloom variety of Siddipet
was Gollabama Saree with
Butta designs, but nowadays
one cannot see this variety.
The weavers here survive
with weaving sarees of
Pochampally variety.
The consumer-weaver
interactions provide inputs
for new designs.
Dyeing
In Siddipet dyeing is done
with tie and die technique,
in which the warp, weft or
both are tie-dyed before
weaving to create designs
on the finished fabric. Great
care must be taken in tying
resist areas with water
repellent material such
as bicycle inner tubes cut
into strips. The precision
of the wrapping determines
the clarity of the design. After
wrapping, the warp threads
are dyed. When finished and
unwrapped, the areas under
the ties have stayed the original
colour. Numerous colours
can be added after additional
wrappings. Designs generally
are worked out on graph
paper. Great care is taken
while putting the warp on the
loom, keeping all the threads
in position is necessary for the
design to work. The natural
movement during weaving
gives designs a feathered
edge which characterizes this
technique.

The fabric used
for weaving
in Siddipet
is cotton.
Increasingly,
the colours
themselves are
from natural
sources and their
blends.
Weaving
Siddipet handlooms are
well known for the durability
of the colours used in the
yarn. The mixture of colour
gives the durability. Usually
Siddipet handlooms are
made in cotton. The count
used in weaving gives the
softness and hardness of
the fabric. Count means the
number of threads used in
the length and breadth for
weaving known as warp and
weft respectively. Each and
every thread of the Siddipet
saree is hand woven. In
Siddipet frame looms are
used for weaving. One warp
will make 30 sarees. It will
take around two days for
completing the weaving
of one saree. The weaver
will get a remuneration of
Rs 160 from one saree. In
Siddipet each weaver works
from home with all the family
members helping in the
different processes. Perhaps
the grandmother may be
winding bobbins, while
the wife is marking out the
design on warp threads and
the husband is weaving on a
loom in the main living area.
Their life revolves around
weaving.
Decline of
Handloom
Industry
Once famous Siddipet
Handloom products are now
becoming extinct due to the
low wages prevailing in the
industry. Previously Siddipet
was full of talented weavers
who used to do magic in the
looms to produce the best
handloom products. Now you
can see very small number
of weavers is actually in
the profession. There is an
emergency situation to take
necessary action to protect
the traditional Siddipet
Sarees. It is informed around
20 years ago, there were
more than 2000 looms in
Siddipet, but now there are
only 500 looms.

Bhildesert bowmen of rajasthan

in central India and some
part in east Tripura on the
border of Bangladesh. Bhils
are popularly known as the
bowmen of Rajasthan. Bhils
are mainly divided into two main groups
the central or pure bills and eastern
or Rajput Bhils. The central Bhils are
found in the mountain regions in the
Indian states of Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra, Gujrat and Rajasthan.

Tradition
History :
Bhils belong to the race of
the pre-Aryans. The name
‘Bhil’ is derived from the
word villu or billu, which,
according to the Dravidian
language is known as Bow.
The name Bhil also finds
mentioned in the great epic
called Mahabharata and
Ramayana. The Bhil women
(Named as Shabri) offered
ber to Lord Rama, when
he was wandering through
the jungles of Dhandaka,
searching Sita. The popular
legend represents them
as being descended from
Nishada, son of Mahadev by
the human female. Nishad
was brutal and ugly, who
killed his fathers bull and
as the consequence, he
was banished to mountains
and forests. They were
considered as the great
warriors who fought against
the Mughals, Marathas and
the Britishers.

Language and
Costumes:
Apart from other states,
Bhils comprise 39% of
Rajasthan’s total population.
Speak Bhili, which is an
Indo Aryan language. Bhil
women wear traditional
saris and the Bhil men wear
loose long frock along with
pyjama. The peasants wear
turbans. Bhils also wear
brass ornaments. Bhils are
tall, well built with handsome
features. They are known
for their truthfulness and
simplicity. They love
independence. They are
brave and their weapon
is bow made of bamboo.
Earlier they were great
hunters. They now practice
agriculture as the source of
livelihood.

Religion:
Religion practice among
the Bhils differ from place to
place. Most of them worship
local deities like Khandoba,
Kanhoba, Bahiroba, and
Sitalmata. Some of them
worship Tiger God called
‘vaghdev’. They have
no temples of their own.
They consult Badvas - the
hereditary sorcerers on all
the occasions. Bhils are
highly superstitious tribals.
They have Bhagat or Gurus
who perform the religious
rites. They have village
headsmen, who deals with
their disputes. Bhils strictly
follow rules and regulations.
They marry only from their
own classes. Their close
relationships are tightly
based on mutual love and
respect. They have a rich
cultural history and gives
much importance to dance
and music. Ghoomar is the
most famous dance among
the Bhils. Than Gair is the
religious dance, drama
performed by the men in the
month of Sharavana (July
and August). The Bhils are
talented in the sculptured
work. They make beautiful
horses, elephants, tigers,
deities, etc. out of clay.the
Britishers.
Tradition

Fair and
Festivals:
The Baneshwar fair is the
main festival celebrated
among the Bhils. This fair
is held during the period
of Shivatri (in the month of
January or February) and
is dedicated to Baneshwar
Mahadev also known as
Lord Shiva. On this occasion
Bhils gather together and
set up camps on the banks
of the Som and Mahi river.
They perform dance around
the fire and sing traditional
songs. At night they enjoy
raslila at the Lakshmi
Narayan temple. Cultural
shows, magic shows, animal
shows and acrobatic feasts
are the main attraction of
the fair. This fair is actually
the combination of two fairs,
which are held in reverence
of Lord Shiva and the other
one that commenced after
the setting up of Vishnu
temple by Jankunwari. Holy
and Dusshera are the other
major festivals celebrated
among the Bhils in India.
They have a rich cultural history
and gives much importance to dance

‘Meena’ word is derived from ‘Meen’
which means ‘fish’ in Sanskrit language.
Meena is a tribe or community,
mainly belongs to the Rajasthan
state of India. Meenas claim
that, they are descended from
the Matsya Avtar or the fish
incarnation of the Hindu God,
Lord Vishnu. They celebrate
‘Meenesh Jayanthi’ on 3rd tithi
of the Chaitra Shukla paksha,
according to the Hindu Calender,
in the name of God Vishnu.
According to Britannica, “the
Minas are possibly of inner
Asiatic origin, and tradition
suggests that they migrated to
India in the 7th century with the
Rajputs.”
The Meena Community is mainly
found in the northern part of
Rajasthan. They share the Brij
and Matsya area of the state with
some other communities. These
areas are Sawai Madhopur,
Dausa, Jaipur, Dholpur and
Karauli districts in Jaipur and
Bharatpur region, also the
Bharatpur and Bayana districts.

CultureCulture
Most of the members of the
Meena community are in Kota,
Jhalawar and Bundi. Now-a-
days, they are also present
in the northwestern areas of
Madhya Pradesh, mainly in
Sheopur, Morena, Gwalior,
Shivpuri, Guna, Sajapur and
Capital of the state, Bhopal.
Agriculture is the main
occupation of the community.
During the Vedic period,
Rajasthan was mainly ruled
by the Meena kings or Meena
Dynasty. They had an emblem
of fish like the Pandyan
Kingdom of the south. Meena
Kingdom is also known as the
Matsya Kingdom in Sanskrit. It
is also mentioned in Rig Veda.
Later, Meena people and Bhils
mingled with the ‘pardeshi’
(foreign people). They were
mainly, Scythian, Hepthalite
and other Central Asian clans.
The Meena Community is mainly found
in the northern part of Rajasthan. They
share the Brij and Matsya area of the
state with some other communities.

worship Hindu God and
Goddess, mainly, Bhainroon
(Lord Shiva), Hanuman,
Krishna and Goddess as well.
They provide better rights and
freedom to their females in
comparison with other Hindu

and well acceptable in the
community.
There was a Janpad which
was known as ‘Matsya
Janpad’ during the time when
‘Mahabharat’ was written.
Rao Hammir the great king
of Ranthambhor was from
the Meena Community. He
was the grandson of the
great king Prithviraj Chauhan.
According to the scholars,
ruler Kachwaha Rajputs
and Mughals destroyed the
glorious past of Meenas.

STORY FOR KIDS
One Day Yasoda was busy churning
curd. While doing so, she remembered
the playful activities of Krishna. She
composed songs about him and enjoyed
singing them to herself. Krishna was
sleeping within the room.
KRISHNAThe Powerful
kitchen. Krishna was only half
fed. So he felt irritated. His eyes
became red and his lips trembled
in anger. He began to bite his
lips. He took a piece of stone and
threw it angrily at the churning
pot. The pot broke and he took a
large quantity of the butter in his
tiny hands. With false tears in his
eyes he entered a room. Hiding
himself in a corner he went on
eating the butter, seated on a
mortar.
Yasoda returned after a while
only to find the broken pot with
After a time when he woke up
and he felt hungry. He caught
hold of the churning rod to
prevent the mother from churning,
as if to say, “Mother, stop that
churning and look at me. I am
very hungry.”
Yasoda smiled at him and took
him on her lap and began to feed
him. But she had kept the milk
pan on the fire in the kitchen. She
smelt the boiling milk overflowing
from the vessel and getting burnt.
She immediately dropped her son
on the floor and ran towards the

the curds flowing all over
the place. Krishna, however
was not to be seen anywhere
near. She had no doubt that
the breaking of the pot was
the work of her son. She
slowly followed his butter
smeared footprints. Krishna
was sitting on an upturned
wooden mortar, sharing the
butter with the monkeys
which had come down from
the trees. Since he knew that
his mother would be angry,
he was looking all around
with great anxiety watching
for her. Yasoda, with a little
stick in her hand cautiously
approached him from behind.
Catching sight of her, Krishna
quickly got down from the
mortar and began to run as if
very much afraid. Yasoda too
followed to catch hold of him,
still with the stick in her hand.
After running a little distance,
Krishna allowed himself to be
caught by Yasoda. He looked
very uneasy, as if admitting
his guilt. As she looked at him
she saw that he was weeping,
same two inches. Frustrated,
she went on joining more and
more lengths of rope but all
in vain. The shortage of two
inches remained constant.
Yasoda had used up all the
ropes in her house, and yet
the tying up of Krishna was
not complete. The Gopis who
were standing all around
and watching this fantastic
rope-trick, began to laugh at
Yasoda’s discomfiture.
What could poor Yasoda
do but join in their laughter!
When Krishna saw his mother
perspiring and tired, he
allowed himself to be tied up
out of compassion for her.
Then Yasoda, leaving Krishna
tied up there, went inside to
resume her household duties.

The tender-hearted mother
that she was, Yasoda did
not have the heart to strike
her son. So she immediately
threw the stick away and
merely rebuked him saying,
“Your mischief has passed
all bounds. I gave you too
much freedom. Now I shall
tie you up so that you cannot
commit any further mischief.
Nor will you be able to play
with your friends.” So saying,
she brought a short piece of
rope and placing Krishna by
the side of the mortar tried to
tie him to it. But she found the
rope was a little short. She got
another piece and joined both
the ropes.
What a miracle! Still the rope
proved to be not long enough.
She found that the rope was
short by two inches to make
a knot. So she attached one
more piece of rope to it. But
even this was short by the
she brought a short piece of rope and
placing Krishna by the side of the
mortar tried to tie him to it. But she
found the rope was a little short. She
got another piece and joined both
the ropes.

If the women had access to the long-acting
contraception of their choice, most of the
unintended pregnancies within two years of a
woman giving birth could have been prevented
or postponed, the study says.

says, “A lot needs to be done to
make access to highly effective
contraception a reality for low
income or uninsured women.”
“Counseling is important during
prenatal care so women know
they have this option, and actually
implementing availability of
immediate postpartum long-acting
reversible contraception is a very
important step.”
After interviewing hundreds of
women, the researches found
out that, women wanted to delay
childbearing for at least two years.
The women in the interview,
reported their pregnancy status
and contraceptive method, and
soon after giving birth, they also
noted their preferred contraceptive
method, regardless of whether that
was what they were using.
At six months postpartum, 377
women were interviewed and
almost about 70% of them opined
that they faced the problem in
using their preferred method.

Often, the problem was a
financial or health system and
these women were more often
using less effective methods,
like condoms, or hormonal
contraception.
On the other side, women
who did not have such
problems were using
permanent methods like
vasectomy or sterilization
or long-acting reversible
contraception (LARC)
methods like an intrauterine
device (IUD) or hormonal
implant.
Between 6 months and
24 months postpartum,
for Medicaid patients, which
was one barrier women faced.
In 2011, Texas almost
stopped public funding for
subsidized family planning
services. So in 2012, the
woman may have found a
tougher time, than before.
Potter further said, “We
started recruiting in 2012,
April, so that was right at the
very worst time in Texas.
There had been 79 clinic
closures, and those that
were open were extremely
short on funds and were
not able to buy long-acting
contraception.”
Since then, funding has been
reinstated and Medicaid
has begun reimbursing for
immediate postpartum LARC,
he said.
there were 77 reported
pregnancies, including 12%
of the women, who had no
problems to contraception
and about 43% of women
who encountered financial or
health system barriers, as per
the results in Obstetrics and
Gynecology.
Of the 71 unplanned
pregnancies, 46% of women
would have preferred to use
a permanent birth control
method, and 87% opined that,
they wanted to use a long-
acting option, if it is available
for free or at low cost.

30-day waiting period for
sterilization of Medicaid
patients, and ensuring women
have access to the full range
of methods while they are still
having regular or scheduled
appointment with obstetric
providers, are the measures
to increase women’s access.

Chapatis or Indian flatbread. The delicious dish even goes well with
plain boiled.rice or Parathas that is pan fried Indian flatbread. Take

* Ground beef or minced beef:
1/2 kg
* Vegetable/ canola/ sunflower
* cooking oil: 3 tbsps
* onions: 2 medium-sized;
chopped fine
* cumin seeds: 1 tsp
* garlic paste: 1 tbsp
* ginger paste: 1 tbsp
* garam masala: 1 tbsp

How to prepare
Take a deep pan. Heat vegetable/ canola/ sunflower
cooking oil on medium flame.
Once oil gets hot, add cumin seeds and fry for a
minute.
Add chopped onions and satue, until they turn
translucent.
Add ginger and garlic pastes and fry for 1 minute.
Add the powdered spices like garam masala, cumin,
coriander and salt for taste.
Saute all, stirring continuously.
When oil begins to separate from the masala
mixture, add minced meat and sauté till they turn
brown.
Keep stirring for some time.
Now, add chopped tomatoes, stir and cook.
Once they meat gets cooked thoroughly, turn off fire

Pakistan sponsored
terrorist Play with fire
Heavily armed group of terrorists from Pakistan,
on 2 January 2016, attacked the Pathankot Air
Force Station, part of the Western Air Command
of the Indian Air Force.
Four attackers and two security
forces personnel were killed, with
an additional security member
dying from injuries hours later. The
attackers, were wearing Indian Army
fatigues and were suspected to
belong to Jaish-e-Mohammed, an
Islamist militant group designated as
a terrorist organisation by India, the
US, the UK and the UN.
The attack was an attempt to derail
a fragile peace process meant to
stabilise the deteriorated relations
between India and Pakistan, as
several pieces of evidence were
found linking the attackers to
Pakistan.
On the night of 31 December 2015,
four men hijacked a multi-utility
vehicle belonging to Salwinder
Singh, a superintendent of the
Punjab Police, in Dinanagar. They
slit the throat of jeweller Rajesh
Kumar, who was with Salwinder
Singh and was later admitted to
a hospital. The vehicle was found
abandoned about 500 metres away
from the airbase. The attackers
have also murdered Ikagar Singh,
a civilian taxi driver, before the
hijacking his car.
On the morning of 2 January 2016
at around 03:30 IST, at least six

insurance scheme
of NDAgovernment

The crucial element of the
policy is to bring down the

2% of the sum insured, to be
paid by farmers. The State
and Central government
would pay the remaining.
Earlier, farmers had to pay a
premium ranging from 4% to
15% to insure their crops.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh
said, while addressing the
press, that, “The scheme
will create a security shield
for farmers and will provide
financial relief to them.”
Even though the crop
insurance schemes

23% coverage, while the
Government is aiming at
increase of the cover to 50%
in the next few years.
According to Mr Singh, the
scheme was not accepted by
farmers due to deficiencies.

Sankranti is observed with a
great trumpet blast. However,
it is celebrated with different
names and rituals in different

in the very old epics like
Mahabharata. So, apart from

patterns on the ground with chalk or flour,
called “muggu” or “Rangoli” in Telugu, in
front of their homes. These drawings are
decorated with flowers, hand-pressed
piles of cow dung, called “gobbemma”
3 Kanuma
On the third day, Kanuma is celebrated.
Kanuma is very close to the hearts of
farmers because it is the day for praying
and showcasing their cattle with respect.
Cattle are the representative indication of
wealth and prosperity.
4 Mukkanuma
The fourth day is called Mukkanuma,
which is popular among the non-
vegetarians of the society. On this day,
farmers offers prayer to the elements like
rain, soil, fire for helping the harvest.

1865 to Agarwal parents,
Munshi Radha Krishna Azad
and Gulab Devi in Dhudike
village of Ferozpur District in
Punjab, India. He completed
his schooling from a school
where his father was posted
as a teacher. His family
allowed him, the freedom to
have different beliefs and
faiths. He took admission
in law stream at the Lahore
college in 1880, where he
came in contact with other
freedom fighters like Lala
Hans Raj and Pandit Guru
Dutt. After completing law
from the government college,
he begun his legal practice in
Hissar, Haryana. He became
the follower of Dayanand
Saraswati school and
contributed in the foundation
of the nationalistic Dayanand
Anglo-Vedic School.
Lala Lajpat Rai founded the
Punjab National Bank in
1895 and the Hindu Orphan
Relief Movement during
1897. He also established the
Indian Home Rule League of
America in New York in 1917.
He came back from America
in 1920 and was invited to
preside the special session
of congress, which was
scheduled to hold in Calcutta.
He was not in favour of ‘Non
Cooperation Movement’ but
later he supported Mahatma
Gandhi in the movement.
Apart from a freedom fighter,
he was a good author he
wrote many books like, The
United States of America:
A Hindu’s impressions
and a study, History of the
Arya Samaj, Swaraj and
social change, England’s
Debt to India: India and

Education In India.
He launched a peaceful
procession in Lahore
during October 30, 1928,

Police Superintendent, Scott
ordered the ‘lathi charge’ on
the activists. Lala Lajpat Rai
was fatally hit by the police
during the ‘lathi charge’. He
received severe head injuries
and died on November 17,
1928.
Lala Lajpat Rai founded the Punjab National Bank
in 1895 and the Hindu Orphan Relief Movement

Ujjain
Holy city of salvation
Ujjain also known as Ujain, Ujjayini, Avanti,
Avantikapuri, is an ancient city of Malwa region in
central India, on the eastern bank of the Kshipra
River, today part of the state of Madhya Pradesh.
Ujjain is well connected with rest of India by road
and rail. Ujjain is connected to nearby towns with
very good roads compared to the rest of Madhya
Pradesh. It is just 52 km from Indore.
History
The earliest references to
the city, as Ujjaini, are from
the time of the Buddha,
when it was the capital of the
Avanti Kingdom. Since the
4th century B.C. the city has
marked the first meridian of
longitude in Hindu geography.
The early history of Ujjain is
lost in the midst of antiquity.
By the 6th century B.C., Avanti
with its capital at Ujjaini,
is mentioned in Buddhist
literature as one of the four
great powers along with Vatsa,
Kosala and Magadha.
It is also reputed to have
been the residence of Ashoka
(who subsequently became
the emperor), when he was
the viceroy of the western
provinces of the Mauryan
empire. In the Post-Mauryan
period, the city was ruled
by the Sungas and the
Satavahanas consecutively.
It was contested for a period
between the Satavahanas
and the Ror Sakas (devotees
of Shakumbari), known as
Western Satraps; however,
following the end of the
Satavahana dynasty, the
city was retained by the
Rors from the 2nd to the

4th century CE. Ujjain is
mentioned as the city of
Ozene in the Periplus of the
Erythraean Sea, an antique
Greek description of sea
ports and trade centers in
the western Indian Ocean.
Following the enthroning of
the Gupta dynasty, the city
soon became an important
seat in the annals of that
empire. Ujjain is considered
to be the traditional capital of
King Chandragupta II, also
known as Vikramaditya, at
whose court the nine poets
known as the navaratna (nine
jewels) of Sanskrit literature
are said to have flourished.
In the 6th and 7th centuries,
Ujjain was a major centre
of mathematical and
astronomical research. The
famous mathematicians
who worked here include
Brahmagupta, whose book
Brahmasphutasiddhanta was
responsible for spreading
the use of zero, negative
numbers and the positional
number system to Arabia and
Cambodia; Varahamihira, who
was the first to discover many
trigonometric identities; and
Bhaskaracharya, or Bhaskara
II, whose book Lilavati broke
new ground in many areas of
mathematics.
Ujjain was invaded by the
forces of the Delhi Sultanate
led by Iltutmish in 1235,
suffering widespread
destruction and systematic
desecration of temples. Under
the Mughal emperor Akbar it
became the capital of Malwa.
In the 6th and 7th
centuries, Ujjain was
a major centre of
mathematical and
astronomical research.

War, and Gwalior, Ujjain,
and the neighboring princely
states were made a part of
the Central India Agency.
After Indian independence,
the Scindia ruler of Gwalior
acceded to the Indian Union,
and Ujjain became part of the
Madhya Bharat state. In 1956
Madhya Bharat was merged
into the Madhya Pradesh state.
An account of an unknown
Greek merchant who made a
voyage to India in the second
half of the first century AD, the
Periplus talks of a city called
Ozene to the east of Barygaza
(Broach) which fed all
commodities to trade like onyx,
porcelain, fine muslin and
quantities of ordinary cottons,
spikenard , costus bodellium to
this important port and to other
parts of India.
The earliest known epigraphic
record of the Paramaras, the
Harsola Granth, issued at the
beginning of the 10th century
AD, maintains that the kings
of the Paramara dynasty
were born in the family of the
Rastrakutas in the Deccan
The early Paramara chiefs of
Malwa were probably vassals
of the Rastrakutas. The
Udaypur Prasati, mentions
Vakpati Vakpati I as the king of
Avanti and it was probably in
his region that the Rastrakuta

time of Vakpati’s successor,
Vairisimha II, to the invading

During the last half of the
18th century Ujjain was
the headquarters of the
Maratha leader Scindia. The
Scindias later established
themselves at Gwalior,
and Ujjain remained part of
Gwalior state until Indian
Independence in 1947.
Gwalior state became a
princely state of the British
Raj after the Maratha defeat
in the Third Anglo-Maratha
avenged his defeat at the
hands of Indra III by invading
the empire of Rastrakuta.
Mahipala and his Kalachuri
confederate Bhamanadeva
are said to have conquered
the territory up to the banks
of the Narmada including
Ujjain and Dhar. The
Paramara sovereignty in the
Malwa ceased until AD 946
when Vairsimha II became
dominant in the area. It is in
his son Siyaka II’s reign that
the independent Paramara
rule in Malwa began. It is
believed that it was this time
that the capital was shifted
to the area of the Mahakala
Vana in Ujjain.
From the 9th to the 12th
centuries, the Paramaras
became so identified with
Ujjain that subsequent
tradition has converted
Vikramaditya into a
Paramara. The last Paramara
ruler, Siladitya, was captured
alive by the Sultans of Mandu,
and Ujjain passed into the
hands of the Muslims.
Thus began a long era of
misfortune and decay and the
ancient glory of Ujjayini was
lost in a morass of repeated
inroads of attacking hordes.
The invasion of Ujjain by
Iltutmish in 1234 triggered
off a systematic desecration
and despoiling of temples.
This tide of destruction was
stemmed only in the time
of Baz Bahadur of Mandu.
The Mughal rule heralded a
new era in reconstruction.
Emperor Akbar put an end

to Baz Bahadur’s hegemony
over Malwa and had a city
wall constructed for the
defense of Ujjain. The Nadi
Darwaza, Kaliadeh Darwaza,
Sati Darwaza, Dewas
Darwaza and Indore Darwaza
were the various entrances to
the city.
In 1658 a battle took
place near Ujjain in which
Aurangzeb and Murad
defeated Maharaj Jaswant
Singh of Jodhpur, who was
fighting on behalf of Prince
Dara. The actual scene of
the battle is Dharmatpura,
renamed Fatehbad by
Aurangzeb, after the victory.
The cenotaph of Raja Rattan
Singh of Ratlam, who fell in
the battle, still stands at the
site.
In the reign of Mahmud
Shah, Maharaja Sawai
Jai Singh was made the
Governor of Malwa, a great
scholar of astronomy, he
had the observatory at Ujjain
reconstructed and built
several temples.
At the beginning of the 17th
century, Ujjain and Malwa
went through another period
of seize and invasion at
the hands of the Marathas,
who gradually captured the
entire region. The Maratha
domination of Malwa
gave impetus to a cultural
renaissance in the region
and modern Ujjain came into
being. Most of the temples
of Ujjain were constructed
during this period.
It was during this time that
Ujjain became the meeting
ground of painters of the
Poona and Kangra styles.
The impact of the two different
styles of painting is distinctive.
The examples of Maratha style
are found in the temples of
Ram Janardan, Kal Bhairava,
Kalpeshwar and Tilakeshwar
while the traditional Malwa
style can be seen in the
Sandipani Ashram and in
many large houses of the local
seths.
In the Maratha period, the art
of wood work also developed.
Wood carvings were done on
the galleries and balconies.
But many excellent examples
have either been sold as junk
or destroyed.
Ujjain finally passed into the
hands of the Scindias in 1750
and until 1810, when Daulat
Rao Scindia founded his new
capital at Gwalior, it was the
chief town of his dominions.
The shifting of the capital to
Gwalior led to a decline in
the commercial importance
of Ujjain. But the opening of
Ujjain-Ratlam-Godhra branch
of the Bombay-Baroda line
corrected the balance. A
considerable volume of trade
mainly with Bombay, existed in
cotton, grain and opium during
the British Indian period.
There is much to demonstrate
that in the perspective of
India’s long history, Ujjain
enjoyed great importance
in the battle for the
empire and the constant
struggle for supremacy.
Political importance was
compounded by the
economic factor of Ujjain
being situated on the main
artery of trade between the
North, the South and the
West. This in turn contributed
to Ujjain acquiring a cultural
splendour of its own which
is equaled by very few other
cities in India.
The names of Kalidasa and
Ujjayini are inextricably
linked together in the
Indian traditions. It is in
Meghdoot, a poem of a
little over hundred verses,
describing the anguish of
a yaksha, separated from
his beloved by a curse,
sending a message to her
in the city of Alaka through
a rain cloud from his exile
in Ramagiri (now identified
as Ramtek near Nagpur)
that Kalidasa’s love of
Ujjayini finds full expression.
The poet describes the
imaginary passage of the
cloud over Ujjayini, and it
is almost as if he is loath to
move on, for in 12 verses
(27-38), there is a lyrical
description of the city and
the people which conjures up
a vivid picture of a civilized
attractive society, a leisured
class, intensely practical
and yet imbued with deeply
religious and philosophical
preoccupations.
Indian Travelogue

A fragmented inscription of
this place records the building
of the palace in 1458, in the
time of Mahmud Khilji. The
story goes that the tanks were
constructed all around to keep
the temperature very low by
Sultan Nasiruddin Khilji, the
Sultan of Malwa in the 16th
century, because he was in
the habit of taking mercury
which is hot.
As a great religious center,
Ujjain ranks equal to Benaras,
Gaya and Kanchi. Saivism,
Vaishnavism and their various
cults and sects, Jainism
and Buddhism, have found
a niche in this catholic city.
Siddha and the Natha cults
which were offshoots of
Tantricism, also flourished in
Ujjain.
Ujjain finally
passed into the
hands of the
Scindias in 1750
and until 1810,
when Daulat
Rao Scindia
founded his
new capital
at Gwalior, it
was the chief
town of his
dominions.

The Avanti-Mahatmya of the
Skanda Purana has recorded
a description of the Sun
Temple and two tanks, the
Surya Kunda and the Brahma
Kunda. People from nearby
villages have a ritual dip in
the Surya Kunda even today.
Remains of the old temple are
found scattered all over this
area. The Avanti Khanda of
the Skanda Purana mentions
innumerable temples
consecrated to Shakti and her
various forms.
In ancient times the city was
called Ujjayini. As mentioned
in the Mahabharata epic,
Ujjayini was the capital of
the Avanti Kingdom, and has
been the Prime Meridian for
Hindu geographers since
the 4th century BCE. Ujjain
is one of the seven sacred
cities (Sapta Puri) of Hindus.
Kumbh Mela, religious
festival is held here every
12 years. It is also home to
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga,
one of the twelve Jyotirlinga
shrines to the god Shiva and
is also the place where Lord
Krishna got education with
Balarama and Sudama from
Maharshi Sandipani.

Maha Kaleswar
temple
One of the 12 jyotirlingas
in India, the lingam at the
Mahakal is believed to be
swayambhu (born of itself)
deriving currents of power
(shakti) from within itself as
against the other images and
lingams which are ritually
established and invested with
mantra-shakti.
The idol of Mahakaleshwar is
known to be dakshinamurti,
facing the south. This is a
unique feature upheld by
tantric traditions to be found
only in Mahakaleshwar among
the 12 Jyotirlingas. The idol
of Omkareshwar Shiva is
consecrated in the sanctum
above the Mahakal shrine. The
images of Ganesh, Parvati
and Karttikeya are installed in
the west, north and east of the
sanctum sanctorum. To the
south is the image of Nandi.
The idol of Nagchandreshwar
on the third storey is open for
darshan only on the day of
Nagpanchmi. On the day of
Mahashivaratri, a huge fair
is held near the temple and
worship goes on through the
night.
The presiding deity of time,
Shiva, in all his splendour,
reigns eternal in Ujjain. The
temple of Mahakaleshwar,
its shikhara soaring into the
skies, an imposing façade
against the skyline, evokes
primordial awe and reverence
with its majesty. The Mahakal
dominates the life of the city
and its people, even in the
midst of the busy routine of
modern preoccupations, and
provides an unbreakable link
with past traditions. On the day
of Mahashivaratri, a huge fair
is held near the temple, and
worship goes on through the
night

lake; it has five levels, one
of which is underground.
The temple itself is located
in a spacious courtyard
surrounded by massive
walls. The shikhara is
adorned with sculptural
finery. Brass lamps light
the way to the underground
sanctum. It is believed that
prasad offered here to the
deity can be re-offered unlike
all other shrines.

carved pillars in the assembly
hall date back to the Parmar
period. Worshippers throng to
this temple because the deity
here is traditionally known as
Chintaharan Ganesh meaning
“the assurer of freedom from
worldly anxieties”.
Harsiddhi Temple
This temple occupies a
special place in the galaxy
of ancient sacred spots
of Ujjain. Seated between
the idols of Mahalaxmi and
Mahasaraswati, the idol of
Annapurna is painted in dark
vermilion colour. The Sri
Yantra, the symbol of power or
shakti, is also enshrined in the
temple.
According to the Shiva Purana,
when Shiva carried away the
burning body of Sati from
the sacrificial fire, her elbow
dropped at this place. There
is an interesting legend in
the Skanda Purana about
the manner in which the
Goddess Chandi acquired
the epithet of Harsiddhi.
Once when Shiva and
Parvati were alone on Mount
Kailash, two demons called
Chand and Prachand tried
to force their way in. Shiva
called upon Chandi to
destroy them which she did.
Pleased, Shiva bestowed
upon her the epithet of ‘one
who vanquishes evil.

Siddhavat temple
This enormous banyan
tree on the banks of the

with religious sanctity as the
Akashyavat in Prayag and
Gaya, Vanshivat of Vrindavan
and the Panchavata of Nasik.
Thousands of pilgrims take
a dip in the Shipra from
the bathing ghat built here.
According to one tradition,
Parvati is believed to have
performed her penance
here. It used to be a place of
worship for the followers of
Natha sect. One legend has
it that some Mughal rulers
had cut off the Banyan tree
and covered the site with iron
sheets to prevent its roots

Kal Bhairava temple
The worship of the eight
Bhairavas is a part of Saivite
tradition and the chief
among them is Kal Bhairava,

of the Skanda Purana.
Worship of Kal Bhairava is

The HUNS
of India
The Huns are the Sanskrit
name of the Hephthalites,
who lived near to China.
Historians said that, the
Huns were divided into two
branched.
Indian Huns known as the
‘White Hunas’. They spread
their kingdom from the
border of Persia to Khotan
in Central Asia. They are
famous for their extreme
brutality and cruelty.
The most of the parts of the
India were ruled by the Gupta
Empire. The Huns attacked
on the Gupta Empire, when
there was a less control of
Guptas after the death of
their King Samudragupta.
They won and established
their empire in the Jammu,
Kashmir, Himachal,
Rajasthan, Punjab, and parts
of Malwa. The Gupta Empire
and Kushan dynasty reigned
in India during the 5th century
in Ganges basin and Indus
respectively. The Huns
entered from the Kabul Valley
in the subcontinent. They also
entered in the Punjab and the
Gupta Empire failed to stop
them. They occupied their
feet in the Gangetic Valley
during 458 AD. Toramana
was the first king of the Huns
Kingdom. He ruled northern
India as well as Eran in

central India. He occupied
Punjab, Rajputana, Kashmir,
parts of Doab and Malwa.
He reduced the power of the
local kings and assumed the
title of “Maharajadhiraja”.
Toramana was joined by
some of regional emperor of
the Gupta dynasty during his
invasion in India. He defeated
by Skandagupta, and moved
to the other side of India. After
defeated by his own son,
Toramana ruined every city
and town nearby the Ganges.
The Hunas mistreated
Buddhists and destroyed all
the monasteries.
Toramana
occupied Punjab,
Rajputana,
Kashmir, parts of
Doab and Malwa.

death of Gupta Emporer
Skandagupta in 470 AD. After
Toramana, the Hunas were
under the leadership of the
Mihirkula, also, known, as
Mihirgula or the “Indian Attila”.
He was the successor and the
son of former king Toramana.
Mihirakula was known as
an uncouth in manner and
an iconoclast by a Chinese
pilgrim who travelled to
northern India. The King was
also famous for his hatred
for Buddhism. He was very
tyrant ruler and a destroyer.
He ruled from Sakal which was
his capital. After the defeat of
Mihirkula, the power of Hunas
decreased. He continuously
defeated by two Indian Kings
Yasodharman of Malwa and
Narasimhagupta Baladitya of
the later Gupta dynasty. He
defeated by Yasodharman and
Narasimhagupta Baladitya
and had to leave India forever.
Mihirakula died in Kashmir
during 542 A.D.
The Hunas had ruined the
dominance of the Gupta
Empire in India and on their
feudatories. After the end of
Gupta Empire small kingdoms
began to grow in India. After

Verse meaning
All men are forced to act
helplessly according to the
impulses born of the modes
of material nature; therefore
no one can refrain from doing
something, not even for a
moment.
Commentary
It is not a question of embodied
life, but it is the nature of
the soul to be always active.
Without the presence of the
spirit alias, the material body
cannot perform. The body is
only a vehicle to be worked
with the help of spirit, which is
always active and cannot stop
even for a moment. As such,
the spirit has to be engaged
in the good work, otherwise it
will be engaged in occupations
dictated by illusory energy.
In contact with the material
energy, the spirit acquires
material modes and to purify
the soul from such affinities it
is necessary to get engaged in
the prescribed duties enjoined
in the sastras. But if the soul is
engaged in his natural function
of service to the almighty,
then the soul is able to do only
good which will enlighten him
towards the path of salvation.
In this verse Lord Krishna
states that all are compelled
to act as per the habit of one’s
likes and dislikes influenced
by one’s attachments and
aversions arising out of
prakriti, material nature and
designated by one’s past
life activities. If one should
steadfastly determine to
perform absolutely nothing, still
one would be compelled into
action by the qualities of the
the three gunas being sattva or
goodness, rajas or passion and
tamas or ignorance, all from
prakriti, material nature.
Lor Krishna says that one
should first purify themselves
by performing karma yoga,
which is actions without desires
as prescribed in the Vedas,
which destroys sins which
hinder spiritual development,
before embarking on the path
of jnana yoga the cultivation of
spiritual knowledge.
The body is only a vehicle to be
worked with the help of spirit, which is
always active and cannot stop even
for a moment.
