INDIAN DIASPORA
When anything is to be
discussed about Dharmavaram,
the first thing that comes
into the mind is, its sarees.
Dharmavaram sarees are
popular nationwide. What made
the city handlooms so famous?
Let us get into the details and
know about it.
Dharmavaram sarees
The elegant silk sarees define
the pride of Dharmavaram.
The cotton and silk weaving
industries in the city, has made
Dharmavaram, world popular.
Dharmavaram sarees usually
have broad borders, adorned
with brocaded gold patterns.
According to the weavers,
brocaded means, sarees

Hub of Silk
Dharmavaram is considered
as a hub of silk handlooms.
A complete area in the city is
allocated to weave and sell
only silk clothes.
Dharmavaram saree cost
ranges from Rs. 2,000 to Rs.

Along with
the silk,
Dharmavaram also
produces Cotton,

handlooms are

Dyeing
Firstly, the silk/ cotton
yarn will be involved in
the dyeing process. In
this process, the yarn
would be dipped in the
boiled colour water in
a high temperature.
Higher the
temperature, higher
would be the durability
of the colour. After
dyeing, make sure
that the color is
spread uniformly
throughout the yarn
and it does not

quality.
The colours are applied as
per the specifications of the
designers and also as per the
customers order.

(Drying yarn in sun can be

for the actual weaving.
Weaving process
The proper mixture of
colour gives the durability to
Dharamavaram handlooms.
The handlooms are made
in both cotton and silk. The
softness and hardness of
the fabric, depends upon the
count used. (Count means
the number of threads used in
the length and breadth for
weaving known as warp and
weft respectively).
Every weaver works from
home. Silk/cotton and Zari
are the core materials used
for manufacturing the saree.
Dharmavaram Sarees are
traditionally woven in the
interlocked-weft technique.
The required design is initially
drawn in a computer and later
that is punched into a card
and then those cards are
loaded in Jacard in the loom.
First the yarn is loaded as
warp and then loaded into
the loom. The weavers
use their hands and legs to
weave the Saree. It requires
approximately 4-8 days
(depending on the variety of
saree) of continuous efforts
of two persons for weaving a
saree.
Due to the low wages, most
of the weavers are getting
out of the profession and
thus the handloom industry
is in a stage of losing its
identity now. Hope the
government takes the
required action, before the
traditional handloom industry,
completely fades away.

INDIAN DIASPORA Tradition
Kashmiri Pandit
marriage
The Kashmiri Pandits are the Brahmin
community from the Kashmir Valley, a
mountainous region in the Jammu and
Kashmir. At present, they are the only
Hindu community native to Kashmir.
While it comes to the discussion
of Kashmiri marriages, one
would not wish to come out
of it. Can’t believe? Let us
experience the feeling, through
discussing about the process of
marriage in Kashmiri Pandits.
Kashmiri Pandits
marriages
Firstly, Kashmiris are very
much concerned about the
horoscopes of both the bride
and groom. Along with it, even
background, status and moral
character of the family of the
prospective match and their
close relatives, are concerned
before the marriage.
If all the above mentioned
are positive, then the bride’s
parents would propose a
wedding date and if even
groom’s parents agree to it,
the priest fixes the wedding
date.
Pre-wedding procedure
Formal Engagement or
Kasamdry
After the two families are
committed to marry the
couple, the priests fix the date
of the engagement ceremony
as per the Kashmiri calendar.
The ceremony takes place,
putting an idol in front. The
either side elders meet in a
temple and exchange flowers
as a sign of celebration.
The bride’s family lays out a
meal. In both bride and the
groom’s houses, the eldest
aunt prepares ‘var’ (a special
rice pudding), and distributed
among the neighbor and
relatives. The bride’s family
sends cash, fruits, dry fruits
and a pot containing nabad
(misri, sugar lumps) to the
groom’s house. But in the
present days, the couple
meets in a temple and
exchange the gold rings.
Livun
Livun is the traditional
cleansing of the house before
a wedding. Both the bride
and groom’s family do not
necessarily do the Livun on
the same day. On this day,
the floors of the Kashmiri
mud houses are cleaned and
treated with a mixture of mud
and water.
All the married female
members of the family attend

Tradition
The traditional
wedding attire for
Kshmirir pandits
is Pheran. The
groom wears a
tweed pheran
with a sword in
his waistband and
jootis in his feet.
A week prior to the wedding, the
maenziraat ceremony will be held.
It begins with krool khaarun, a
ceremony which involves door
decorating by their respective
aunts (father’s sister). In the
evening, the bride-to-be follows

the ceremony. The bua or pof
(father’s sister) of the bride
and groom prepare var and
distributes everyone. They are
given cash by the respective
parents of the bride and the
groom as a token of love. This
is also the day when the waza
(family cook) arrives and puts
together a mud-and-brick oven
called wuri in the backyard of
the house. This is where the
traditional meals will be cooked
for the wedding ceremonies.
Wanvun
A sangeet session would be
conducted in both bride and
groom’s houses. The guests
are served a salted pink tea
(called noon or sheer chai),
at the end of the sangeet
sessions.
Maenziraat
A week prior to the wedding,
the maenziraat ceremony will
be held. It begins with krool
khaarun, a ceremony which
involves door decorating by
their respective aunts (father’s
sister). In the evening, the
bride-to-be follows an elaborate
bathing ritual, during which
her feet are washed by her
maternal aunt. After the bath,
her eldest aunt decorates her
hands and feet with maenz
(henna).
Thread Ceremony
(yagneopavit)
The Janayu or thread ceremony
will be conducted for the groom,
a few days before the wedding,
if at all it was not conducted
before.
Divagone
The divagone will witness
the transition of the bride
and the groom from
brahmacharya ashram
to grihastha ashram.
The bride and the
groom worship God
Shiva and Goddess
Parvati. The ceremony
is observed separately
by the girl’s family
and the boy’s family
in their respective
homes.
The Wedding
attires
The traditional
wedding attire for
Kshmirir pandits
is Pheran. The
groom wears a
tweed pheran with a sword
in his waistband and jootis in
his feet. His headgear has a
turban (gordastar), to which
a peacock feather will be tied
with a golden thread.
The bride’s pheran is usually
made of raffle, with ari or
hook embroidery at the
neck, cuff and edges. Over
the kalpush, a long piece of
starched and ironed snow-
white cloth.
A white scarf (called zoojh)
will be wrapped over the
kalpush, which covers 50%
head from behind. The scarf
is left hanging on the back
of the head, over the braid,
till it reaches, just below the
shoulders.
Ceremony at the
groom’s house
While the groom’s turban
is being tied, a plate of rice
containing some money
(zung) is touched to his
right shoulder. Before
marriage procession leaves
for the bride’s house, the
groom must stand on a
vyoog (rangoli, a decorative
pattern made of rice flour
and colours). Groom is given
nabad to eat, to announce
his departure, a conch shell
is sounded. Two rice pots
containing money, are given
away to the poor, as a good
will gesture. The groom and
his party (baraat) leave for
the bride’s house in car.

NNihang is even expected to
take its origin from a Persian
word, meaning a mythical sea
creature. The term owes its
origin to Mughal historians, who
compared the Akali’s ferocity

Now, coming to the fully

identification of Nihang
The immediate identification of
a Nihang is their high turbans

also their extensive use of the

Nihang turbans were often
pointed at the top and outfitted
with a trident. At other times,
they would be armed with
an iron claw and one or
several chakram to slice at an
opponent’s eyes. These steel-
reinforced turbans are believed
to protect and erase the need of
a headgear.
Even in the present days,
Nihang still wear miniature
versions of the five weapons
called Pancha shastra in their
turbans. Those five weapons
are named as Chakram,
Khanda, Karud, Kirpan and the

In today’s world, Nihang
are accorded great respect

community sections, but their
Hindu-influenced beliefs and
unorthodox practices (such as

K
Yudhishtira, the eldest brother
of the Pandavas, has once
organized a yagnam called
Rajasuya yagna in their capital
city of Indraprastha. The rituals
are all over and then, Yudhishtra
wanted to give the offerings
made for the yagna to Krishna.

STORY FOR KIDS
So the pandava brother called
Krishna and said, “As per
Bhishma’s advice I wish to
give you these offerings as a
mark of respect.”
The king of Chedi, Shishupala
was witnessing all this. He
was seethed with anger and
got up from his seat shouting
at Krishna with displeasure.
Shishupala was not happy
as a mere cowherd is being
honored first. He began to
call Krishna with names and
was using a verbal duel.
Krishna kept listening to all
these patiently. But at a point
of time, Krishna lost his cool
and killed Shishupala with
his Sudrashan chakra. The
weapon slashed Sishupala’s
head.
Background behind the
death of Shishupala
The death of Shishupala has
an interesting background.
The background is related to
one of Krishna’s friend and
his charioteer, Udhava, who
asked about the Shishupala’s
end.
Shishupala is also Krishna’s
cousin. Shishupala was born
with four arms and three eyes.
A heavenly voice came at the
time of his birth. The voice
said that his arms and extra
eye will disappear, when
someone makes him sit on
their lap. The voice also said
that same person will also
see the end of Shishupala.
Meanwhile, Shishupala began

to the heavenly gate. Due
to a curse, both of them
were born on earth as lord
Vishnu’s enemies. According
to the Puranas, they were
born in the Dwapara yuga
as Thanthavakra and
Shishupala. Krishna killed
both of them.
One day, Krishna went to
his aunt Satyavathi, when
Shishupala was an infant.
Talking to Krishna Satyavathi
said, “Oh Krishna, Shishupala
is handsome just like you.”
Listening to this, Krishna took
the baby from the cradle and
put the baby on his lap. Right
then Shishupala’s extra arms
and eye left the body. Krishna
was surprised to see this. But
Satyavathi was unhappy. She
told Krishna that a heavenly
voice said that Shishupala
will die in the hands of
that person, who makes
Shishupala sit on his lap and
when his extra arms and eye
disappear.
Satyavathi took a promise
from Krishna that he will
excuse Shishupala hundred
times before he kills. Krishna
gave her this promise. She
also said that her son should
go to heaven after he dies.
Krishna told Udhava that
he excused hundred times
before killing Shishupala.
The Sisupala story shows
a discrete way in which
divinity keeps count of one’s
atrocities, and pays back
when the line has been
crossed.

Olive oil
Natures gift
for a healthy life
If you are really fond of
cooking, then you must
know that olive oil is best
in most top chefs' creations.
Olive oil also brings flavor
to food.
Benefits of olive oil
Frying with olive oil
and heart disease risk
Generally, we use sunflower
oil for fried cooking. But
do you ever think that how
it affect our heart? Yes,
your heart is really affected
by fried food. While fried

gets increased in our food,
Olive oil may help
prevent stroke
People using olive oil for
cooking, salad dressing or
with bread may be doing
much to protect themselves
against stroke. The person
whose diet includes a lot of
olive had a 41% lower risk
of stroke compared to those
who had never consumed
it. Consuming olive oil may

Consuming high quantities of
fried food can increase heart
disease risk factors, such as
obesity, hypertension and

pressure, obesity and other
cardiovascular risk factors.
Depression risk and
olive oil
“Consumption of trans fats,
present in fast foods and
mass-produced foods like
pastries, may raise the risk
of depression, whereas
a diet rich in mono and
polyunsaturated fats and
olive oil appears to have a
slight protective effect,” said
Spanish researchers. The
amount of trans fat consumed
development of these tumors.
Such is the case of virgin
olive oil, rich in oleic acid,
a mono-unsaturated fatty
acid, and containing several
bioactive compounds such
as antioxidants. A moderate
and regular intake of virgin
olive oil, characteristic of
the Mediterranean diet,
is associated with low

depression will occur. Use
of olive oil in food will help to

Olive oil may reduce
breast cancer risk
Breast cancer is the most
common type of cancer in
Western countries. Research
carried out with animal

cholesterol levels
Olive oil helps to maintain

levels in the body. The
monounsaturated fat in olive
oil has been shown to control
LDL (bad) cholesterol and
raise HDL (good) cholesterol.
This can potentially lower your
risk of heart disease. Olive oil
is best for cooking and can
also be used for frying.
Extra virgin olive oil
and acute pancreatitis
Extra virgin olive oil is rich in
oleic acid and hydroxytyrosol,
which affect the development
of acute pancreatitis. The
pancreas is a long, flat gland
located behind the stomach
in the upper abdomen. It
produces digestive enzymes
and hormones which regulate

develop the acute pancreas
and control the glucose

Mohamed Hammami from

said, “Olive oil is an
integral ingredient in the
Mediterranean diet. There is
growing evidence that it may
have great health benefits
including the reduction in
coronary heart disease,
prevention of some cancers
and the modification of
immune and inflammatory
responses. Here, we’ve
shown that extra virgin olive
oil and its extracts protect
against oxidative damage of
hepatic tissue”.

J
Jowar roti is famous but may
not be made by most of us
on regular basis, probably
because of not knowing the
perfect procedure to prepare
it. It is time you consider
this high fibre chapatti
that originated from North
Karnataka to include it in your
regular menu. Wondering
why? Here are the amazing
nutritious benefits from Jowar.
Jowar (Sorghum) is ancient
grain packed with higher
calcium content, iron, protein
and fibre. The gain has many
cardiac benefits as it contains
antioxidants and sorghum
wax. Policosanols in the wax
help in lowering cholesterol
levels. Thus, it is an amazing
grain that should be included
in your diet. It goes well with
raita, dal, curries or simple
Process to make roti
The procedure is similar to the
one used to make chapathi
or wheat flour roti. Once your
dough is ready, keep it aside
for 10 minutes. Then, take a
small piece of dough, make
it circular using your palm.
Place it on a flat surface of
your kitchen platform to press.
Use right hand to beat the
dough in the form of circle,
while you have to use left
hand to maintain circle. Keep
using dry flour intermittently to
avoid sticking of the dough to
the surface, while making roti.
Once the roti is prepared,
carefully transfer it to a hot
tawa.
While the roti’s lower part gets
slightly dry, use a soft piece
of cloth to apply water on its
upper surface. Let the water
evaporates a little.
Now, carefully reverse the
roti and let the other side get
cooked by gently pressing
with cloth. The puffs of roti
separate into two layers with
steam inside.
Now take out your Jowar roti,
it is ready to serve.
noting. Jowar is available all
over India and many countries
in the World.
* Serves: 10
* Preparation time: 20min
* Cook time: 3min
* Extra time: 2min soaking
* Ready in: 25min
* Ingredients required to
prepare Jowar roti
* Jowar ata (flour): 250gm,
finely ground
* Salt to tast
* Boiled water: 1/2 cup
Method of preparation
of Jowar roti
Take a kadhai with shallow
depth and wide mouth. Put
finely ground Jowar atta into
it.
Add the water and process
the atta to make dough.
(This dough is called jigatu in
Kannada.)
To jigatu and add dry jowar
flour, knead it thoroughly with
just enough water.
See to it that the dough gets
consistency as that of
chapati dough (may be
even less water than
that).
While
the roti’s
lower
part gets
slightly
dry, use a
soft piece
of cloth
to apply
water on
its upper

The US is set to pass a
bill on immigration with
major implications for the
$146-billion Indian IT sector.
It will have major implications
for the $146-billion Indian IT
sector and its employees.
The bill prohibits the
companies from hiring H-1B
employees if they employ
more than 50 people in the
US and more than 50% of
those employees are H-1B
and L-1 visa holders. The bill
will place severe restrictions
on the Indian IT companies
that are the largest users of
H-1B visas.
Senators Chuck Grassley
and Dick Durbin have
introduced a bipartisan
legislation that will reform
the H-1B visa program,
consistent with the US
Congress’s intent to
ensure qualified American
workers are given the first
opportunity at high-skilled job
opportunities. They argued

by Americans. “There’s a
sense of urgency here for
Americans who are losing
their jobs to lesser skilled
workers who are coming in
at lower wages on a visa
program that has gotten
away from its original intent.
Reform of the H-1B visa
program must be a priority,”
Grassley said in a statement.
They said that outsourcing
companies import large
numbers of H-1B and L-1
workers for short training
periods and then send
these workers back to
their home country to do
the work of Americans.
The Bill gives the labour
department full authority to
review, investigate and audit
employer compliance with
program requirements, as
well as to penalize fraudulent
or abusive conduct. It
requires the production of
extensive statistical data
about the H-1B and L-1
programs, including wage
data, worker education
levels, place of employment
and gender.
“Undoubtedly, this is a
major setback for Indian
IT companies. The Bill, if it

Facebook CEO Mark
Zuckerberg visited India for
the second time to boost the
“digital India” project in India
that was started by the Indian
government. He held a town
hall Q&A session at IIT-Delhi
on Oct 28. His mission to
visit India was to connect
the billions of people on the
internet who do not have
an excess on the internet
in order to provide health
information, jobs, information
and to connect each and
every person to share the
information. The scheme is
monitored and controlled
by the Digital India Advisory
group and chaired by the
Ministry of Communications
and IT. The initiative includes
plans to connect rural areas
with high-speed internet
networks.
During the India visit,
Facebook CEO Mark
Zuckerberg revealed that
when his company was
going through a tough patch,
Steve Jobs advised him
to visit a temple in India,
where the Apple co-founder
had also experienced life-
changing spiritual reflection.
Zuckerberg said, “He told
me that in order to reconnect
with what I believed as the
mission of the company, I
should visit this temple that
he had gone to in India, early
on in his evolution of thinking
about what he wanted
Apple and his vision of the
future to be, the month-long
trip reinforced for me the
importance of what we were
doing.”
Everybody was very much
excited to meet the CEO of
Facebook. In the IIT Delhi
Dogra Hall everyone was
peering into their phones,
busy posting selfies and
updates on the social
network. At the town hall
meeting he was asked a
number of questions based
on net neutrality, internet
access and Facebook drones
by the IITians students.
He spoke about the
importance of providing
internet in India. Zuckerberg
said, “his mission is to
connect over a billion people
who currently don’t have
access, a move that could
provide health information
as well as access to jobs”.
He also added that “It
is an opportunity to help
democracy, to alleviate
poverty,”
He was also asked about,
what and how Facebook
is doing about missing
persons? Zuckerberg replied
to this that we launched
Amber alert last year in
Canada and United States.
When the child goes missing,
Facebook puts a story in the
news feed with the picture
of the missing child besides
with significant details. He
said users can see this in
their news feed and in many
instances have responded
with the whereabouts of
missing children. Zuckerberg
said one child had already
been found through the

I remember talking to my
friends then, how awesome it
would be if we could connect
the world. I had no idea then,
that the service would turn
out to be so big. We just kept
doing the next things.”
Zuckerberg says,
“Facebook’s mission is giving
the people the power to
share. For all the people who
don’t have access to schools,
to have access to information
online is important.”
He also shares his personal
life decision. He gave
information and said that “We
are expecting a daughter
soon. I want my family to
actually be there and see
her taking her first steps. In
maybe 5-10 years we may
be able to develop and share
these real-life like 3D images,
which would be amazing”
Mark Zuckerberg, also visited
the Taj Mahal and found it to
be more spectacular than he
had expected.
He said that we are working
on internet.org to boost the
availability of the internet
and its affordability. He said,
“There are 4 billion people
in the world who don’t have
access. Some of them don’t
have access to the Internet,
the second is affordability,
third is awareness. We’re
working on all of these and
we’re investing in new ways
to provide availability like
solar planes and satellites
that beam down the Internet.”
“Now, Facebook app uses
1/10th of the internet data
than earlier”, he added.
The first internet.org summit
was also held in India on 9
October 2014 in New Delhi.
In this, Facebook plans to
bring Internet to the third-
world via drones, satellites,
lasers, and more. Facebook’s
Connectivity Lab, will work
on the Internet.org project.
It’s powered by the talent
acquired from solar-powered
drone maker Ascenta as
well as poached from NASA.
The main objective of this
summit was to bring together
experts, officials and industry
leaders focus on ways to
bring more Internet services
for people in languages other
than English. So after that
we can now use Facebook
in different languages.
Zuckerberg also met Indian
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi and talked about the

DiwaliFestival of lights,
Descimating ignorance
Diwali or Deepavli refers to the
rows of diyas, or clay lamps.
“Deep” means diyas and “avali”
mean rows. The most important
aspect of Diwali is the worship of
Maha Lakshmi, by offering flowers
and Prasad.
DECEMBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
Maha Lakshmi is the
goddess of wealth and
prosperity, bestowing
richness upon her devotees.
We pray to her for prosperity
and blessings. However,
what sort of prosperity is we
are praying for? We take
the wealth to mean money,
possessions, and material
pleasures. This is not the
true wealth in life and that
makes us prosperous. There
is almost no correlation
between the amount of
money we earn, the number
of possessions we buy and
our sense of inner bliss and
prosperity.
“It is only God's presence
in our lives which makes
us rich. On Diwali, people
pray to Maha
Lakshmi to bestow real
prosperity, the prosperity
that brings light to our lives
and sparkle in our eyes. We
must pray for an abundance
of faith and success in our
spiritual lives, we have pray
for the love of God.”
The Diwali is
celebrated on the
new moon
day that
is at
the
darkest night and at the end
of the Hindu lunar month
of Ashvin. It start of the
month of Kartika. Diwali
generally falls towards the
end of October, or first half
of November every year.
The darkest night is lit up
with diyas and candles,
makes the festival of lights
memorable. Diwali brings
family and friends together
every year. Diwali is also a
festival of sounds, sights and
flavors with fireworks, rangoli
designs and mithai (Sweets).
People also exchange the
gifts to wish each other
happy Diwali.
The religious significance of
Deepavali varies according
to different religion in India,

Cover Story
Significance of Diwali for
Sikhs marks as the Bandi
Chhor Divas. On this day,
sixth guru of Sikhs “Guru Har
Gobind” freed himself and
some Hindu Rajahs, from the
Gwalior Fort, from the prison
of the Mughal emperor,
Jahangir, and arrived at the
Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Ever since, Sikhs celebrate
Bandi Choorh Divas, with the
annual lighting up of Golden
Temple, fireworks and other
festivities. In the Punjab, a
quote famous for this festival
prevailing is ”Daal Roti Ghar
di, Diwali Amrtisar di”.
In West Bengal, this festival
is celebrated as "Kali Puja",
and Kali, Shiva's associate, is
worshipped during Diwali.
Diwali also commemorates
Lord Krishna's victory over
the demon Narakaasura who
had kidnapped and terrorized
the gopis of Vrindavan. When
the evil Naraka was finally
killed by Lord Krishna and
Satyabhaama, he begged
pitifully for mercy. The day
of his death was celebrated
with great joy and festivity. It
is also celebrated as the day
Lord Vishnu married Maha
Lakshmi.
Diwali is a 5 day festival in
India. Dhanteras starts off
the five day festival. On this
day people buy gold or silver
in respect of Lord Laxmi.
Narak Chaturdasi is the
second day of festivities, and
is also called Choti Diwali,
followed by minor pujas.
The third day is the main
festive day. People wear new
clothes or their best outfits
as the evening approaches.
Then diyas are lit, pujas
are offered to Lakshmi, or
to more deities depending
on the region; typically
Ganesha, Saraswati, and
Kubera. The day after Diwali,
is celebrated as Padwa. This
day ritually celebrates the
love and mutual devotion
between the wife and
husband. In many regions,
newly married daughters with
their husbands are invited
for special meals. The last
day of the festival is called
Bhai dooj, where it is the
major day of the festival. It
celebrates the sister-brother
loving relationship, in a spirit
similar to Raksha Bandhan
but with different rituals.
The day ritually emphasizes
the love and lifelong bond
between siblings.
Diwali is the common festival,
which is celebrated all over
the India by everyone.
It is celebrated with full
enjoyment and spirituality.
Diwali is the new beginning
and a time for the real
contribution in our life. That
is the contributions to society
and the poor, our strengths
and weaknesses and making
plans for a new beginning
and a fresh start. Before
Diwali, people spend a lot of
time in cleaning their homes
and their environment. They
buy new clothes, utensils,
jewelry, decorative items, etc.
for their house to make their
homes and surroundings
more attractive. But what
is the actual significance
of cleaning and dusting of
houses? What about our
hearts? When is the last time
we swept out our hearts?
When did we last clear
them of all the dirt that has
accumulated throughout our
lives?
That is the real significance
DECEMBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
of cleaning that we must do.
That is the real meaning of
"New beginning with fresh
hearts." We must clean out
our hearts, clear out them of
darkness and bitterness; we
must make them clean and
make it dazzling places for
God to live. We must be as
thorough with ourselves as
we are with our homes. Are
there any dark corners in
our hearts we have avoided
for so long? Are we simply
"cleaning all the dirt under
the rug?" God sees all and
knows all. He knows what
is behind every wall of our
hearts, what is swept into
every corner, and what is
hidden under every rug. Let
us truly clean out our hearts;
let us get rid of ourselves, of
the grudges, pain, and anger
that clutter our ability to love
freely. Let us empty out every
nook and cranny, so that
His divine light can shine
throughout.”
Diwali is so famous even
Facebook CEO has
regretted for missing this
awesome festival.
On this holy day, let us fill our
entire beings with the light
of God. Let us clean out our
minds and hearts, making a
true "fresh start." Let us pray
to Maha Lakshmi to bestow
the divine gifts of faith, purity
and devotion upon us. With
those, we will always be
rich, always prosperous,
and always fulfilled. Let us
celebrate Diwali this year as
a true "holy day," not only as
another frivolous "holiday."”

Kushan Dynasty under
Vima-Kadphises
Vima-Kadphises had been
the successor of Kadphises.
He conquered several parts
of northern India. Meanwhile,
the Chinese reasserted their
authority in the north and this
led to the collusion with the
Kushans.
The Chinese general Pan-
Chao had conquered
Chinese Turkistan, and thus
established, the Chinese
authority in Parthia, on the
south territory of the Caspian
sea.
Kushans were threatened by
these advances. Kadphises
II, had claimed the hand of
a Chinese princess in 87
AD, an acknowledgement
of his equality with the son
of Heaven. But the proposal
was rejected and Kadphises,
then dispatched a large
army. However, the army
was decimated because
of the difficult terrain and
was defeated easily, by the
Chinese.

Kushans were of great
complexity. The coins exposes
the people’s prosperity, and
show the figure of Kanishka,
standing and sacrificing at altar
and deities, belonging to the
several religions.
The coins act as the
remembrance that, Kushans
were in direct contact with
the Romans. Gandhara art
is considered as the greatest
contribution of Kushan
Dynasty. Buddha and
Bodhisattavas’s stone images
were carved out and the chief
feature was blending of the
Buddhist subjects with Greek
forms.

The imprints of Kushan

proves the effectiveness and
efficiency of Kushan’s ruling
in the place.
Kanishka I throne was
ascended by Huvishka. He
was the founder of a city
Hushka in Kashmir, named
after him (described by
Kalhan in Rajatarangini).
The Kushan empire was in
the zenith, during Kanishka’s
and Huvishka’s reign. After
Huvishka, Vasudeva I led the
Kushan dynasty.
In Indian culture, Kushan
dynasty had been totally
assimilated. Vasudeva I was
the last greatest king of the
dynasty, when the Kushan
empire saw new heights in its
prosperity.
But after the death of

INDIAN VAASTU CORNER
Vasthu
tips for a
Pooja
room
Pooja room is a zone of serenity at every home.
It is the place where we connect the eternal
energies. It is a place where God bestows his
presence within us to guide us to the right
paths of life. Placement of such an important
place, Pooja room, into our houses itself, should
produce positive vibes in the home atmosphere.
DECEMBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM
VAASTU CORNER
This is well possible with
Vastu Shastra, which is the
most commonly used term
particularly when it comes to
constructing or purchasing a
new home. Stressing on ways
to enhance the positive energy
inside your home will help you
to have happy and prosperous
household, according to Vastu
Shastra. Vastu Shastra is a
science, which will help you
increase wealth, well being
and prosperity if you live in
structures that allow positive
cosmic forces.
These attributes will help you
to get an Ideal Puja room in
your home
* Locate your pooja
room in the North, East or the
Northeast side of the house.
* Face towards East/North
while worshiping.
Keep no idols in the
worship room. If you wish to
keep, place idols of height in
between 9”and 2”.
* The legs of the idol
should be at chest level while
worshiping. Whether you stand
or sit.
* Noting should be stored
above the slab or cabinet,
where God is worshiped.
* Do not make your puja
room in a bedroom or a wall
adjacent to the bathroom.
* Do not enter the pooja
room without washing legs and
hands.
* Do not cleanse your feet
by rubbing one over the other.
* Clean your feet on rear
side first with left hand and
pour water with right hand.
* Use copper vessels in
pooja room, particularly where
water is collected.
* Do not draw triangular
pattern of any God in the
Pujaghar.
* The color of pooja room
walls should be white, lemon
or light blue and use white
marble.
* Prayer room should have
doors and windows in the north
or the east.
* Agnikund should be in
the southeast direction of the
Pujaghar.
* Face should be towards
the east while doing the sacred
offerings to the fire.
* Place the lamp in the
Southeast corner of the pooja
room.
Thorough analysis is involved
in the Vastu consultation of
pooja room. While studying
about the vastu of the pooja
room, things that should be
considered include proper

Indian Spiritual
Translation
Know that all living beings
are manifested by these two
energies of mine. I am the
source of the entire creation,
and into me it again dissolves.
Commentary
It is by the combination of
souls and matter that all life in
the material realm comes into
existence. Matter is insentient
by itself. And the soul needs a
carrier. The carrier is nothing
but the form of the body. Living
beings manifest as these two
energies conjugate. Thus, the
conjugation of souls and matter
is through which livings beings
manifest.
The origin of these two
energies is nothing but God.
And hence, the entire creation
manifests from the God. The
cycle of creation of Brahma
completes at the end of
hundred years. When that point
reaches, the manifestation is
dissolved by the lord. The five
gross elements merge into the
five subtle elements, which
will in turn merge into ahankār.
Ahankār merges into mahān
that merges into prakṛiti. All
the prakṛiti dissolves into the
Supreme Lord. prakṛiti moves
towards and sits in Maha
Vishnu’s body, who is a form of
the Supreme Lord.
Even the souls, which remain
un-liberated from the cycle of
creation resides in the body of
God in an unmanifested form.
Such soul awaits next cycle
of creation. The soul waits
for God’s wish to create once
again. And the cycle begins
again and it is then the world
comes into existence. Hence,
God is everything, source,
support, and final resting
ground for all existence.
The soul waits for God’s
wish to create once again.

Sabarimala
Pilgrimage
to transcend earthly
limitations,
change for better
Periodic fasts or vrithams observed in Hinduism intend
to purify the human mind and body. The adherence to
austere way of life and observance of tapas in body, mind
and speech, makes it easy to transcend earthly limitations
and get a better change, according to the Bhagavad Gita.
Sabarimala Pilgrimage is one of the pious pilgrimages
where a devotee has to be pure physically and mentally
to get the darshan of Lord Ayyappan. He is expected
to observe fast or vritham for a 41-day period, usually
when Malayalam month of Vrischikam begins in mid
November. A pilgrim on maiden trip to Sabarimala is
called as Kanni Ayyapppan.

The fast that longs for 41
days throws light on the
significance of abstinence
and austerity in lives of
devotees seeking a complete
merger with the Ultimate. If
the devotee wants to mount
the pathinettu padikal and
enter Sabarimala temple,
he has to follow several
regulations and dictates. He
can only embark on the 41-
day vritham with permission
from his parents and Guru.
On an auspicious day, the
vritham can be commenced
with poojas to the family deity
and making a holy knot with
yellow cloth, which contains
1.25 currency units. This is
presented to the family deity,
which means the devotee
gains his or her approval to
commence the deeksha.
The Sacred Mala beaded
mala/garland with tulsi or
rudraksham highlights his
renunciation of material
temptations. Most devotes
begin to wear mala from the
very first day of Vrishchikam. It
is auspicious to wear mala on
the day of asterism of Uthram
or on a Saturday or a prior to
the first day of Vrishchikam.
The devotee receives mala
from a Guruswami, one who
visited Sabarimala many
times. The ritual is conducted
usually in the precincts of a
temple or any holy place. The
pilgrim swears all commitment
to Lord Ayyappan as he wears
mala. All his thoughts words
and deeds are surrendered
to the powerful deity and
begin to lead the austere life
of an ascetic.

The pilgrim awakes early
on the first day of the fast,
bathes and prays to family
deity, the holy mala, and
navagrahas (the nine
planets). Along with his
guru, he then proceeds to
the temple to receive mala
amid chanting of saranams.
The devotee should shun
all social activities like the
renunciant, Lord Ayyappan,
and immerse in bajans,
prayers, poojas, temple visits,
feeding the poor, cleaning
temples, to spiritual lectures
and attending to the poor/
sick. Only satvic food has
to be consumed. Having
meat, intoxicants like drugs,
alcoholic beverages, betel
leaves, and smoking are all
strictly restricted.
The Ayyappa swami (one
who wears mala) takes
bath in the pre-dawn
hours, applies vibhooti and
sandalwood paste regularly.
He meditates and sings about
Lord Ayyappan all 41 days.
He does not shave, refrains
from hurting anybody, do not
cause any inconvenience
to family, identifies other
Ayyappa devotees as lord
himself. The swamy do not
oil hair or body and carries a

evil and temptations. He does

  • 12. WWW.WISHESH.COM | DECEMBER 2015 12 D INDIAN DIASPORA When anything is to be discussed about Dharmavaram, the first thing that comes into the mind is, its sarees. Dharmavaram sarees are popular nationwide. What made the city handlooms so famous? Let us get into the details and know about it. Dharmavaram sarees The elegant silk sarees define the pride of Dharmavaram. The cotton and silk weaving industries in the city, has made Dharmavaram, world popular. Dharmavaram sarees usually have broad borders, adorned with brocaded gold patterns. According to the weavers, brocaded means, sarees having heavy zari works, with Dharmavaram is a city located at a distance of 47 KM from Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. It is well- connected by both by rail and road. border and pallu having big designs. Hub of Silk Dharmavaram is considered as a hub of silk handlooms. A complete area in the city is allocated to weave and sell only silk clothes. Dharmavaram saree cost ranges from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 1,00,000 with usual price value at Rs. 8,000. Kundans, Chamkies, stones and various opposite colours are used in Dharmavaram saree designing. Not only silk, other material sarees too Not a profession, it’s their devotion Dharmavaram Handlooms Dharmavaram saree cost ranges from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 1,00,000 with usual price value at Rs. 8,000. • 13. DECEMBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM Not following any color contrast, Dharmavaram sarees have heavy ‘pallus’ with a wide variety of designs. Along with the silk, Dharmavaram also produces Cotton, Tussar silk, Cotton silk, and several other material sarees. On the other hand, not just sarees, but Dharmavaram handlooms are even identified for a variety of handlooms like cushion covers, bed sheets, curtains, carpets etc. Dyeing Firstly, the silk/ cotton yarn will be involved in the dyeing process. In this process, the yarn would be dipped in the boiled colour water in a high temperature. Higher the temperature, higher would be the durability of the colour. After dyeing, make sure that the color is spread uniformly throughout the yarn and it does not affect the yarn’s Fine art

  • 15. DECEMBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM quality. The colours are applied as per the specifications of the designers and also as per the customers order. After coloring, the silk yarn would be dried in shade. (Drying yarn in sun can be harmful). Later, the yarn is converted to thread and loaded as warp and later into the loom, for the actual weaving. Weaving process The proper mixture of colour gives the durability to Dharamavaram handlooms. The handlooms are made in both cotton and silk. The softness and hardness of the fabric, depends upon the count used. (Count means the number of threads used in the length and breadth for weaving known as warp and weft respectively). Every weaver works from home. Silk/cotton and Zari are the core materials used for manufacturing the saree. Dharmavaram Sarees are traditionally woven in the interlocked-weft technique. The required design is initially drawn in a computer and later that is punched into a card and then those cards are loaded in Jacard in the loom. First the yarn is loaded as warp and then loaded into the loom. The weavers use their hands and legs to weave the Saree. It requires approximately 4-8 days (depending on the variety of saree) of continuous efforts of two persons for weaving a saree. Due to the low wages, most of the weavers are getting out of the profession and thus the handloom industry is in a stage of losing its identity now. Hope the government takes the required action, before the traditional handloom industry, completely fades away. First the yarn is loaded as warp and then loaded into the loom. The weavers use their hands and legs to weave the Saree. ‘‘ ‘‘
  • 16. WWW.WISHESH.COM | DECEMBER 2015 16 K INDIAN DIASPORA Tradition Kashmiri Pandit marriage The Kashmiri Pandits are the Brahmin community from the Kashmir Valley, a mountainous region in the Jammu and Kashmir. At present, they are the only Hindu community native to Kashmir. While it comes to the discussion of Kashmiri marriages, one would not wish to come out of it. Can’t believe? Let us experience the feeling, through discussing about the process of marriage in Kashmiri Pandits. Kashmiri Pandits marriages Firstly, Kashmiris are very much concerned about the horoscopes of both the bride and groom. Along with it, even background, status and moral character of the family of the prospective match and their close relatives, are concerned before the marriage. If all the above mentioned are positive, then the bride’s parents would propose a wedding date and if even groom’s parents agree to it, the priest fixes the wedding date. Pre-wedding procedure Formal Engagement or Kasamdry After the two families are committed to marry the couple, the priests fix the date of the engagement ceremony as per the Kashmiri calendar. The ceremony takes place, putting an idol in front. The either side elders meet in a temple and exchange flowers as a sign of celebration. The bride’s family lays out a meal. In both bride and the groom’s houses, the eldest aunt prepares ‘var’ (a special rice pudding), and distributed among the neighbor and relatives. The bride’s family sends cash, fruits, dry fruits and a pot containing nabad (misri, sugar lumps) to the groom’s house. But in the present days, the couple meets in a temple and exchange the gold rings. Livun Livun is the traditional cleansing of the house before a wedding. • 99. DECEMBER 2015 | WWW.WISHESH.COM Indian Spiritual Translation Know that all living beings are manifested by these two energies of mine. I am the source of the entire creation, and into me it again dissolves. Commentary It is by the combination of souls and matter that all life in the material realm comes into existence. Matter is insentient by itself. And the soul needs a carrier. The carrier is nothing but the form of the body. Living beings manifest as these two energies conjugate. Thus, the conjugation of souls and matter is through which livings beings manifest. The origin of these two energies is nothing but God. And hence, the entire creation manifests from the God. The cycle of creation of Brahma completes at the end of hundred years. When that point reaches, the manifestation is dissolved by the lord. The five gross elements merge into the five subtle elements, which will in turn merge into ahankār. Ahankār merges into mahān that merges into prakṛiti. All the prakṛiti dissolves into the Supreme Lord. prakṛiti moves towards and sits in Maha Vishnu’s body, who is a form of the Supreme Lord. Even the souls, which remain un-liberated from the cycle of creation resides in the body of God in an unmanifested form. Such soul awaits next cycle of creation. The soul waits for God’s wish to create once again. And the cycle begins again and it is then the world comes into existence. Hence, God is everything, source, support, and final resting ground for all existence. The soul waits for God’s wish to create once again.
