The document proposes improving wireless network coverage at the Jackson Avenue Warehouse facility by taking control of unused IT infrastructure from a departed company, installing additional access points, and upgrading switches and cabling to expand network access across problematic areas of the warehouse and storage locations. Wireless Improvement
Purpose:
- This is a proposal to improve wireless network coverage and strength for the Regal Network within the Jackson
Avenue Warehouse (JAW) Facility. Poor wireless network signal strength has been expressed by our mobile users
while performing their day to day activities including bin transfers and scanning.
- Poor network coverage has been noted in the following areas:
o JAW Side:
 West Wall (45 Odd, 80 Rack Junction)
 Central Area (90, 95, 100 Rack Junction)
 Machining Storage (110 Area)
 Back Dock
o SMI Side:
 Main SMI Storage (Floor Locations)
 Racking (545 – 520 Racks)
- The cause for this issue in the afore mentioned areas is the lack of network access points (AP’s) placed around the
interior of the building. JAW also recently had an organization cease operations and exit, leaving cabling, network
patch panels, and backup power supplies in key locations. By taking control of these locations, Regal can utilize the
connections and upgrade the current network layout around the facility to its full potential.
Recommendation:
- Take control of remaining I.T. related areas within the JAW facility. This includes the MDF Storage closet on the
SMI side, downstairs (A0); and the IDF cabinet above dock doors 19 & 20 (A1). Installation of new(er) access
points required, capable of broadcasting 802.11 n/ac (2.4/5 GHz) network protocols.
- Add additional access points to the wireless network in locations of higher traffic. Move access points from
lower traffic areas to areas of higher occupancy/travel until additional access points can be installed.
- A common access point model already in use within JAW has been selected based on management console
interface, data usage breakdown and existing coverage experiences.

Existing Conditions:
- IDF cabinet in place with networking & fiber patch panels inside
- CAT5 & Fiber optic cable (Single & Multi Mode) run to network locations within facility
- AP & workstation locations currently marked on building map for quick reference when installing new equipment
- Patch panel supplies network connections to CEO, Safety Coordinator, Warehouse Manager, Warehouse
Administrator & 30x30 offices as well as trunk feeds to multiple switches around building
- JAW VLAN1, JAW VLAN2, Cummins VLAN4, Regal VLAN5 required to broadcast from 3550 SW to all connections
- All Power requirements satisfied by utilizing existing UPS system, power strips & wall outlets.
Requirements:
- Fiber patch located within closet/cabinet
o Single Mode fiber required to trunk from RSW1 (network backbone) to MDF Closet (A0) and JAW dock areas
(A1) utilizing fiber junction boxes located within each cabinet location.
o Fiber trunk to Cisco 3550 switch using GBIC (Gigabit Interface Card) part number WS-G5486
- Three additional AP’s required to upgrade existing network infrastructure
o Access point model: Open-Mesh MR1750 AP
o Location: Along North wall of JAW warehouse
 Recommendation: Place vertically along steel girders instead of hidden within.
A0 MDF Cabinet:
Location: JCW I.T. Storage Closet
- Patch panel supplies network connections to JCW WHS NE corner, center, SE corner (2 separate connections), &
former LINC office
o Regal VLAN5 required to broadcast from 3550 SW to all connections
Existing Conditions:
- MDF cabinet in place with networking & fiber patch panels inside
- CAT6 cabling run from punch-down jacks to AP locations within ceiling infrastructure of facility
- Former AP locations previously marked on building map for quick reference when installing new equipment
- All Power requirements satisfied by utilizing existing UPS systems & wall outlets
Requirements:
- 1 (one) Cisco 3550 Switch with JAW VLANs 1 & 2, Cummins VLAN4, and Regal VLAN5 configured
- Patch panel located within cabinet
o CAT5e harness custom fit to run from patch panel to Cisco 3550 switch
o Must be able to attach within cabinet using existing cable management channels/techniques

o Single Mode fiber required to trunk from RSW1 (network backbone) to closet area utilizing fiber junction
box located within cabinet.
o Trunk to Cisco 3550 using GBIC (Gigabit Interface Card) part number WS-G5486
- Three additional AP’s required to upgrade existing network infrastructure
o Access point model: Open-Mesh MR1750 AP
- Locations:
o JCW WHS Northeast corner
o center of JCW Floor Storage
o JCW WHS Southeast corner
A1 IDF Cabinet
Location: Between Dock Doors 19 & 20 (JAW Side)
Existing Conditions:
- IDF cabinet in place with networking & fiber patch panels inside
- CAT6 cabling run from punch-down jacks to AP locations within ceiling infrastructure of facility
- Former AP locations previously marked on building map for quick reference when installing new equipment
- Patch panel supplies network connections to AP’s located in main WHS, 90-95-100 Rack vicinity
o Existing AP’s located along North wall can then be upgraded or decommissioned (due to age/signal output
type)
Requirements:
- One Cisco 3550 Switch installed
- Fiber patch panel located within cabinet
o Single Mode fiber required to trunk from RSW1 to cabinet area
o Trunk to Cisco 3550 using GBIC (Gigabit Interface Card) part number WS-G5486
- CAT5e harness custom fit to run from patch panel to Cisco 3550 switch
o Must be able to attach within cabinet using existing cable management techniques
- Power requirements must be satisfied using power strip(s) and wall outlets
- One additional AP required to extend network coverage utilizing existing cable drop
o Access point model: Open-Mesh MR1750 AP
o Location: Vicinity of 90-95-100 Rack Junction
A2 IDF Cabinet
Location: 110 Machining Parts area
Existing Conditions:
- IDF cabinet in place with networking & fiber patch panels inside
- CAT6 cabling run from punch-down jacks to AP locations within ceiling infrastructure of facility
- Wiring harness custom built to run from patch panel to RSW2, supplying VLAN5 to all connections
- Former AP locations previously marked on building map for quick reference when installing new equipment
