3. HISTORY
⯈ Wind energy is one of the oldest
sources of energy used by humankind
⯈ Ancient cultures used Windmills for
pumping water and grinding cereals
⯈Due to the oil crisis in the 1970s, energy
sources emitting less pollution would be
necessary
8. WIND ORIGINS
⯈ When sunlight strikes Earth's surface, it heats that surface differently
⯈ Heated air rises, creating an area of low pressure
⯈ Cooler air descends, creating an area
of high pressure
⯈ Air flows from areas of high pressure into
those of low pressure.
⯈ This flow of air is wind
18. CHOOSING A TURBINE
⯈ Number of Blades: -Low number of blades=higher torque
-Odd number of blades=more stability => 3 BLADES
⯈ Rotor Area and height: Chosen according to the demanded power of turbine
21. CONCLUSION
⯈ Even though the cost of wind power has decreased in the past 10 years, the technology requires a
higher initial investment than fossil-fueled solutions for power supply
⯈Major challenge to using wind as a source of power is that the wind does not always blow when
electricity is needed
⯈ Wind turbines can be built in rural areas, thus benefiting the economy there.
⯈ Wind energy is one of the lowest-priced renewable energy technologies available today
⯈ It has been estimated that wind power could supply one third of the world’s electricity by 2050
