WiMAX is a wireless technology that provides broadband connections over large areas using towers similar to cell phone towers. Towers can provide coverage up to 3000 square miles and connect to the internet or other towers using line-of-sight microwave links between 10-66 GHz. Within a 4-6 mile radius of each tower, WiMAX receivers in devices like laptops can get wireless access at speeds up to 70 Mbps. By the end of 2010, WiMAX was projected to be available in over 80 US cities.
