The most obvious thing about Willy is that he functions off the lies that he has told himself. He has
convinced himself that he is good at his job and well–liked, when the truth is, he is neither.
Throughout the play, Willy switches between the present and scenes from the past as he recounts
events of the past. Some believe that this is a sign of dementia, however, it appears to be a way for
him to escape the truth of his situation and the reality of who his sons are.
In the play, Willy puts the expectation of success upon himself and Biff. He desires to have the
American dream and he convinces himself that he has achieved it despite the fact that he has to
borrow money from his neighbour Charley in order to pay his bills each week. When he learns that
Biff has tried to get a loan to start a business, he commits suicide so that Biff will have the money
that he needs. This is the biggest example of the fact that Willy did not live in reality because if he
did he would have realized that the chances of Biff actually using the money to build a business was
nil. This is because Biff is the manifestation of all of Willy's negative attributes both real and
imagined. However, unlike Happy who has embraced the American Dream to his own detriment.
Biff cannot allow himself to do this.

Australia Ltd, is a text which constructs an evident manipulation of gender roles and their function
in consumerism. In this advertisement a man appears stressed from work and collapses lethargically
on the couch while the woman arrives home from work looking energetic with a young child, bags
of shopping and speaking on the phone. Through Semiotics, the study of signs and their meanings, I
will analyse the text using Charles Pierce's triadic model and Ferdinand Saussure 's semiology and
his dyadic model of the signifier and the signified. I argue that the advertisement conveys particular
meanings through identifiable signs that convey myths about gender roles in society. The
advertisement works to convey how women are powerful and independent, but does so in a way that
degrades men through the construction of stereotypes. In this analysis I will discuss the function of
advertisements in society in relation to semiotics, multiple readings advertisements can have and the
myths constructed about gender revealed in the advertisement through critical semiotic analysis and
how these myths influence social reality.

Alison Bechdel, a literary and queer theorist herself who would go on to coin the Bechdel test, grew
up in close proximity to theory. In a family of academics, with her teacher father and former actress
mother, Bechdel was always surrounded by literature, so when it comes to self discovery of her
sexuality, it's no surprise that she turns to the literary realm, from Rubyfruit Jungle to the Oxford
English Dictionary, to understand herself. Bechdel's first graphic memoir, Fun Home, examines her
upbringing in a funeral home with her cold mother and her closeted bisexual father, who commits
suicide soon after Bechdel leaves for college. It engages in frequent literary and theory illusions,
beginning from the mention of Icarian Games on the very first page. While Bechdel's work seems
like it could be easily situated in structuralist theory, the work easily lends itself to a multiplicity of
meanings, an inherent feature of deconstruction work that allows readers to veer into feminist
theory, queer theory, or even Marxist theory. Just as Bechdel rewrites and reframes the events of her
formative years multiple times throughout the novel, the novel particularly lends itself to
structuralist, deconstruction, queer, and feminist theory, which all lead to particularly illuminating
readings that compliment each other. Fun Home perhaps most glaringly fits into the literary theory
of structuralism, and its application becomes easy as soon Bechdel introduces the readers to her
father's constant rebuilding of their home on page 5. One of structuralism's main tenants is
understanding the world as discursively constructed, meaning that there is no inherent essence or
nature that informs one's production, whether that be behavior or presentation or style, and that one

Reflection (Page 850) In Ferdinand De Saussure's Course in General Linguistics, almost the entire
reading from our assigned texts that is, has conventionally been summarized on page 850. Overall,
Sassuare explains his analysis of language by describing it as a system of signs and
comparing/contrasting words in a language to other words. He says that words are what they are
because of what they're not, and language wouldn't exist without sound–image. Saussure analized
language as a system of linguistic signs that he used to explain the "..indefinite plan of jumbled

obviously because it's the first example of his strange thought process. His diction is rather strange
at times, but I thought this page served as a great introduction of what type of "adventure" you're

that even mean? What is a speech–circuit? This definitely is NOT a book that you can read or should
be able to read, process, and comprehend on a first read through.

toward the idea of the "real" object or concept out in the world. So thus, each utterance in a language
points to a concrete concept, and how that concept is understood through language reflects on how a

Reflection On Conflict
In this paper I will describe a conflict that has occurred in my life. It had a huge impact on my
second year of college and even today things still pop up from it, because I still run into each of
these girls. In this particular conflict between my old roommates we will review a course concept
involving the four phases of conflict escalation. Starting with phase one, a perceived threat to
someone, followed by defensiveness, then stonewalling, and lastly contempt. After the conflict
occurs, one of the parties' uses the course concept of face saving by portraying something that is not
really her true feeling. In order to overcome this conflict, I will discuss how the parties need to
mediate and learn to communicate efficiently, as well as listen to each other more. The course
concept I will use to help solve the conflict is a facultative method with a third party intervention. I
am also hoping to make a facilitating reappraisal, where it might be possible to reframe the conflict.
While discussing facilitating reappraisal we will dig deeper into discussing third party intervention,
which I believe both parties may need.
My rationale for this particular choice of conflict is based on the horrible living experience I went
through last year. After the conflict, my roommates continued to struggle to get along and would
argue over little things, when there seemed to be something deeper. It bothered me for a long time
because it also impacted me. Our first year of living together everything went well, however it all

Alfonso Cuaron's Use Of Symbolism In Children Of Men
Cinematic techniques play an essential part in a film's quest to create a particular effect or to
uncover a particular theme. The dystopian movie, Children of Men, directed by Alfonso Cuaron,
incorporates numerous symbols to convey a much broader meaning to its theme driven story line.
The symbols in the film play a significant role helping explain the two main underlying themes in
the film, which are hope and the coming of age. Without the use of the many symbols, it would be
difficult to understand the main themes the film is trying to explore. In this paper I argue how the
use of symbols bring a deeper meaning to the story by unveiling some important traits in the
characters. I also argue how symbol usage uncovers the themes of hope and the coming of age that
the film is exploring. The first symbol that Cuaron explores is one of a biblical reference. The main
character in the film, Theo, portrays many similarities to Jesus. One may not initially see this, but

Magazine covers, advertisements or any publication embed a set of ideologies. O'Shaughnessy and

"Hunters in the Snow", by Tobias Wolff, is a short story that revolves around an ill–fated hunting
trip between three friends. Wolff is known to be a fantastic writer, who utilizes various literary
devices, as well as an exemplary setting description that really sets up the mood of his stories.
Although this short story is rife with powerful literary devices, there are four very powerful symbols
that I feel are the most relevant to the story. The criteria in choosing these symbols lies solely on
how they drove the story, and represented the most pivotal moments. The symbols (In no specific
order of significance) are the snow, the "No Hunting" sign, the truck, and the dog.
The first symbol is the snow. Tub, arguably the most important character of the story, is introduced
while standing in the snow, waiting on the other two main characters, Kenny and Frank. Wolff's

William Golding uses many objects and characters in his story, "Lord of the Flies", to develop and
symbolize certain aspects of his story. Lord of the Flies is a story that contrasts good with evil. The
story shows how a society without any set–up regulations, develop and grow into a civilization. The

The extremity changes from fear of the unfamiliar to absolute anarchy, savagery and eventually
death. When put into universal terms, one can only conceal internal savagery for so long before it
reveals through external actions when given the appropriate opportunity. The fear of the unknown

Death Is The Worst Thing
There is one thing in this world that no one can escape, that everyone fears, and makes people who
are close to that person miserable, and that is death. Death is the worst thing that can ever happen to
a person, and is just as bad for the people who are close to them. There is an emptiness that comes
with the death of a loved one or someone close. That blankness in the world does something to the
people who encompass that person who passed. It changes people, whether it is for better or worse.
Death is a part of life and depending on how people are affected can dictate whether it will leave a
positive or negative change to their life and that conversion happened to me with the death of my
mother, Fran. I can recall the day it happened, like it was yesterday, the air had a certain emptiness

Interview With Sign Language
On December 2 Mrs. Hover came in and we interviewed her through sign language. I was the first
group to go up and I was nervous because I was worried I'd mess up, forget my sign language or not
be understood. Mrs. Hover asked us our name and I signed Sabrina with no hesitation or problem.
After a minute I was more comfortable signing and wasn't nervous anymore. I asked Mrs. Hover if
she was in any Deaf clubs and I was surprised with her answer because, she stated that she wasn't in
any and that she didn't like Deaf clubs. I was surprised because I expected her to love them or be in
more than one Deaf club. I tried to ask her what it was like to raise a deaf son, but I had trouble

The gymnastics and raise sign, in my opinion, were iconic. Pizza had many sign, but my favorite
was the one you sign on your face. When I asked her how to sign band she asked what instrument I
played and I finger spelled clarinet; therefore, she showed me the sign for clarinet and the sign for

Lord Of The Flies Fire Symbolism Analysis
Destruction and Salvation According to Wikipedia, a symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates,
signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow us to go
beyond what is known or seen by creating links between concepts and experiences. They help create
a better understanding of the plot, theme, or characters in literature. For example, Lord of the Flies,
by William Golding consists of several symbols. The novel is about a group of British boys who are
stranded on an island with nothing but their knowledge of human civilization. They try to create a
society of their own, but it begins to subside as they descend into savagery. Symbols like the conch,
the beast, or the painted masks help reveal their true nature. However, the most important symbol is
the fire. Golding uses the fire to paradoxically represent savagery, destruction and most significantly
hope of rescue. He describes the fire as technology that menaces destruction if it gets out of control,
yet ironically it also symbolizes the boys' connection to human civilization. The fire is the most
important symbol in Lord of the Flies because it helps readers understand the plot and the theme that
destruction can be found in hope. Golding stresses the importance of the fire as Ralph repeatedly
mentions how, "The fire is the most important thing on the island"(80). This symbol helps build up
the plot because it is mentioned almost entirely throughout the whole entire novel. For example, the
exposition is when Ralph first points out that the boys will be able to get rescued if they make a
signal fire on top of the mountain. The rising action is when jobs were assigned and Jack and his
hunters were in charge of keeping the fire going but failed to do so. The climax is when Jack and his
tribe "stole" the fire. The falling action is when Jack and his tribe set the jungle on fire as a quicker
and efficient way to find Ralph. Lastly, the resolution is when the boys ironically get rescued by a
naval officer because of the fire they lit. Near the end of chapter five, "Beast from Water," Piggy
exclaims "what are we? Humans? Or animals? Or savages?...Going off hunting pigs–letting fires

The On The Other Hand, Parole, By De Saussure
On the other hand, parole refers to the use of the langue – the action in and of itself. It occurs in the
phenomenon of language as a sequence of speech. Parole, which includes both written and spoken
languages utilized in everyday life, is extremely diverse and varied dependent upon the number of
people attempt to use a common language. In addition, de Saussure noted the constant change that
parole undergoes as social groups, and age of users manipulate the language over time.
De Saussure's interpretation of the underlying basis of language also included a composition of
signs as opposed to sentences. Signs consist of two parts: a notion and a sound/written pattern.
Without a sound, the notion is incommunicable. Similarly, without a notion, sound patterns are just
noise. Without a comprehensive understanding of langue, parole is a meaningless collection of
sounds or symbols grouped together at random. By understanding the relationship between the two
parts of a sign, langue and parole create meaning. Therefore, de Saussure spoke heavily on the
importance of understanding the langue of a language, especially a foreign one, than to grow the
vocabulary of parole. By approaching a nonnative language as such, the speaker increases his or her
