The Willow Park Natural Area is home to
a variety of birds, nesting waterfowl, small
wildlife and native plants, shrubs and trees.
In 2009, the Town of Stony Plain designated
the area as an urban natural reserve.

The Town also uses this area as a naturalized
method of improving and enhancing
storm water run-off water quality. Regular
maintenance involves inspections of the
pond and upkeep of the area, including
removal of trash and debris, weed
management and ensuring the integrity
of the pond structure.

Willow Park Natural Area - Interpretive Signage

A large part of Brunei consists of peat swamp forests; a very special but vulnerable type of wetland forest. One unique element of these areas is their peat soil; a metres deep layer of soft organic material, formed over thousands of years under conditions of waterlogging. Peat swamp forest covers around 100,000 ha (17% of the land area) of Brunei. In contrast to neighbouring countries, the Brunei peat swamp forests are still relatively intact. It is estimated that 80% of peatlands are still covered by good quality peat swamp forest, the highest proportion of intact peat swamp forest in all of South East Asia – by far.

The City of Arlington is an active member of the Stillaguamish Watershed Council implementing many restoration projects, these are a few of the city's projects. The City of Arlington's new Stormwater Wetland is an innovative new tertiary treatment facility, designed to filter out chemicals and toxic substances before the water is returned to the Stillaguamish River. The Eagle Creek project directly addresses the degraded conditions by working with the private landowner to repair and restore the first 1000’ (12%) of the stream’s riparian corridor, and to provide for fish passage to the upper 9000’ of stream corridor through the removal of two collapsed culverts & enhancement of native riparian vegetation largely with native conifers and riparian shrubs.

U.S. Water Alliance

The metropolitan area of Eastern Pima County Arizona is developing and implementing a Regional Optimization Master Plan (ROMP) as a $720 million program to modernize and upgrade the two major RWRD metropolitan treatment facilities. These modernizations will improve the water quality for recharge and reuse, develop a state of the art water quality laboratory, incorporate solar and rainwater harvesting features, and will help to develop habitat and birding features. The Pima County/Tucson team will present the ongoing collaboration with the water research scientists at the University of Arizona, Pima Association of Governments, Tucson Audubon Society and other community organizations to proudly transform these RWRD treatment facilities into a water-centric focus area for the region, capitalizing on the natural beauty of the Santa Cruz River and the award winning area of the Tucson Sweetwater Wetlands.

The second instalment of the Environment Institute’s Science Seminar series for Semester 2 held at 1pm Friday 14 August in the Benham Lecture Theatre. Dr Kane Aldridge will present the topic ‘What is the future for the Lower Lakes?’ Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert (the Lower Lakes) provide important habitat for biota within the Murray-Darling Basin. The current drought has highlighted the over-allocation of water resources in the Murray-Darling Basin, with water levels falling dramatically in the Lower Lakes to unprecedented levels. This has resulted in a dramatic increase in salinity, the exposure of acid sulfate soils and the loss of habitat for many freshwater plants and animals. In this presentation, Kane will examine what is known about the natural water regime and ecology of the Lower Lakes and the current management of the region. This information will be used with predictions of water availability in the Murray-Darling Basin to explore how the lakes may be managed in the future to provide a resilient ecosystem that is able to cope with variability in flow and climatic condition

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical Futures

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”. All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
