The City of Arlington is an active member of the Stillaguamish Watershed Council implementing many restoration projects, these are a few of the city's projects. The City of Arlington's new Stormwater Wetland is an innovative new tertiary treatment facility, designed to filter out chemicals and toxic substances before the water is returned to the Stillaguamish River. The Eagle Creek project directly addresses the degraded conditions by working with the private landowner to repair and restore the first 1000’ (12%) of the stream’s riparian corridor, and to provide for fish passage to the upper 9000’ of stream corridor through the removal of two collapsed culverts & enhancement of native riparian vegetation largely with native conifers and riparian shrubs.
Tenants in USDA-financed rentals – the majority of whom are elderly –
depend on their affordable homes, but resources and policies regarding
preservation of these developments are changing. Panelists will discuss
USDA policies as well as strategies for preservation in the current economic
climate.
A one day symposium on zero/low carbon sustainable homes took place at The University of Nottingham on the 24th October, 2012. The event offered professionals within the construction industry a unique opportunity to gain added and significant insight into the innovations, policies and legislation which are driving the construction of zero/low carbon energy efficient homes both here in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. It explored solutions to sustainability issues “beyond” the zero carbon agenda. BZCH followed on from the successful ‘Towards Zero Carbon Housing’ symposium the University hosted in 2007. This presentation covers the basic elements of the issues surrounding storm water BMP requirements in the state of North Carolina. It is strictly informational, and is intended to explain, in lay man's terms, the environmental, legal, and economical issues surrounding storm water BMP management for developers, owners, and managers of commercial real estate and institutional campus facilities. I have been developing and tweaking the information in this presentation since 2007 for the purpose of educating property managers, facility managers, landscape architects, landscape workers, and a variety of other groups interested in the topic of storm water. Many of the photographs I have taken myself, whereas others were found on the internet. A small percentage of slides, and much of the knowledge shared, have come from presentations and certification classes I have attended, given by Bill Lord and Bill Hunt at NCSU. I share this information to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our natural resources by proactively taking responsibility for the run off we generate when converting greenfield sites into impervious surfaces that contribute to flash and water quality issues downstream.
