of the time—the railways
In 1849 at the Great Western Railway,
he became the first independent
auditor of a public company ever
appointed.
He helped develop a system that
formed the basis for the English
railway accounts, as well as a system
of hotel accounting that became
standard in the field.
He discovered fraud perpetrated in
the Great Western Railway, of GBP
220,000 which is equivalent to GBP
18 million in terms of today’s money.
6. He was very prominent personality
in accounting profession.
His importance to the accounting
profession was recognized in 1888
when he was elected as 2nd
president of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants in England
and Wales.
Deloitte was also a founder-member
of the Chartered Accountants
Benevolent Association.
When Deloitte retired from Deloitte,
Plender, Griffiths & Co. in 1897, one
year before his death, he was the
oldest practicing accountant.
