The document summarizes the results of a survey about business outlook and conditions in the US. Key findings include:
- 79% of respondents expect improvements in overall US business conditions in 2017, up significantly from 44% last year.
- 77% expect improvements for their own organizations.
- Respondents believe new policies under the Trump administration and potential tax reform will facilitate business growth.
- Despite optimism, challenges remain around issues like regulations, competition, and healthcare costs. Data privacy and cybersecurity threats are also a top concern.

About The Cleveland Cord Blood Center
The Abraham J. and Phyllis Katz Cord Blood Foundation dba Cleveland Cord Blood Center (CCBC) is a non-profit organization
that collects, stores, and distributes stem cell-rich umbilical cord blood. The cord blood, usually discarded at birth, is used for
the treatment of deadly blood cancers and other life-threatening illnesses, and for medical research.
As a non-controversial source of stem cells,
cord blood is collected from umbilical
cords after delivery of full-term, healthy
infants. The cord blood is then frozen and
stored in liquid nitrogen freezers until
needed. Hundreds of cord blood stem cell
transplants are performed worldwide each
year and used in the treatment of leukemia
and other blood disorders. Researchers are
also looking at cord blood stem cells to
treat other diseases such as diabetes, heart
disease, metabolic diseases, neural disease
or injury and more. Established in 2008,
CCBC has been issued a biologics license
from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA), is accredited by the Foundation for
Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) and
the American Association of Blood Banks
(AABB), is designated as a Health Resources
and Services Administration (HRSA)
contractor, and is a member bank of the
National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP).

Cord Blood Distributed Throughout the U.S.,
Around the Globe through 2016
Cord blood units distributed to serve a diverse population
During the year, a total of 104 units were distributed worldwide for transplant into patients. The cord blood stem cell units
stored for use in transplant have met specific testing requirements and will be available for use by transplant doctors
through the international registries, including the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match and Bone Marrow Donors
Worldwide.
Because of the broad diversity in the genetic and ethnic backgrounds of families in the CCBC collection sites in Atlanta and
Cleveland, the center’s diverse donor pool helps ensure good matches for patients of African American, Latino and Asian
descent, for whom well-matched stem cell grafts are not generally available in the adult donor registry.

Do you expect business conditions
in the U.S. to:
There is considerable optimism that U.S. business conditions will soar this year. Nearly 80
percent of the respondents to our seventh annual Business Outlook Survey believe U.S. business
conditions will improve, compared to 44 percent last year. In fact, only 2 percent expected
significant improvement last year, but now, 19 percent predict significant improvement. Business
owners and executives are just as upbeat about their own organizations. The primary reason
for the boost in confidence is clear—President Donald Trump. As one respondent wrote,
“President Trump is a positive game changer for the business community.”

Many data breaches at colleges or universities still result from lost or stolen devices that are
unencrypted (i.e., laptops, USBs, portable storage devices). But the main cause of intrusions
into a campus network is through phishing emails sent to university employees whose
everyday job is not to worry about data security. The hackers take advantage of these
vulnerabilities and send targeted spear-phishing emails to university employees and
subsequently obtain valid usernames and passwords to gain access to the university system,
which is another reason why breach response workshops, tabletop exercises and training
employees is crucial.
There also has been a rise in hacking into college IT systems by other countries to obtain
access to sensitive research data.
Colleges and universities should monitor their third-party vendors and service providers
that are granted access to sensitive and personal information. Vendor breaches continue to
increase and often are the most costly to a university.
