William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England. He died in 1616 at the age of 52 and is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. Some of his most famous works include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Throughout his career, Shakespeare wrote 38 plays and over 150 sonnets, which had a significant influence on both English literature and Western culture as a whole.
