William Hogarth was an English painter and printmaker born in 1697 in London. He had an education as a mechanic and apprenticed as an engraver before opening his own engraving and printing shop at age 22. He began painting small conversational pieces in his spare time and found success as a painter. In 1730, he married Jane Thornhill and produced his first series of moral paintings called "The Harlot's Progress." He was later appointed as King's sergeant-painter in 1757. Hogarth died in 1764 after producing satirical works that criticized vices and folly and provided commentary on human manners.
