I apply Ranganathan's 5 laws of library science to altmetrics, as part of a holistic research impact support service. I discuss what altmetrics are, what they measure, their uses throughout the research lifecycle, and where you can get them. I then apply Ranganathan's 4th law, saving the time of the user, to the harvesting of altmetrics by research information systems, embedding them at the point of need. The challenge of altmetrics is to change our concept of what an institutional repository is, from a simple container of research outputs to a smart system that harvests and catalogs a much broader range of output and impact data elements.

HIS 117 Milestone O ne Guidelines and Rubric
Introduction and Thesis Statement
Overview: In Module One, you identified your topic and research focus for the final project. In this assignment, you will build upon that foundation to craft the
introduction and thesis statement for your final historical analysis paper. When formulating your thesis statement, you should draw upon at least three scholarly
primary or secondary resources. These resources need to be presented in a bibliography using Turabian format. Each element of this milestone will help you in
the development of your rough draft. As you work on this milestone, you may want to review this resource on how to develop an introduction.
Prompt: For this assignment, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Introduction: Submit your introduction to your final historical analysis paper. It should include the following:
A. Introduce your topic related to why humans created societies, states, and empires in the premodern world. In your first journal assignment, you
provided a rough idea of your topic, which addressed the statement: “Humans created societies, states, and empires from the late Neolithic
period to 1500 CE in order to...” In your introduction, briefly describe your topic and provide reasons for this choice.
B. Create a thesis statement that sets up the argument you will try to prove in your essay. Your argument should provide an answer to the
question of why humans created societies, states, and empires. Some possible answers include: to maintain a common defense, to allow for the
growth of individuals, to guarantee admission to heaven, and so on. Your thesis statement should be formulated after rereading the primary and
secondary sources that you selected from the vetted links in the Research Guide document. You should rely on these sources to support your
argument in the Research and Analysis section of your final paper. Your thesis statement can be one or two sentences long.
C. Describe the three specific empires, states, or societies that you will analyze in your paper. Identify the three states or empires you selected
from the following world regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, or the Americas. Briefly describe them and the reasons you choose them.
II. Bibliography: Your bibliography for Milestone One must contain at least three scholarly resources [two primary and one secondary from the collections
listed in the Shapiro Library’s Research Guide for HIS 117 (http://libguides.snhu.edu/worldcivilizations)] tha t you will use to support your thesis
statement. Make sure each resource is formatted correctly using Turabian style. For information on Turabian style, review the following resources:
Shapiro Library and OWL.
Guidelines for Submission: Milestone One should be submitted as a 1.5- to 2-page Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman
font, and one-inch margins. Your sources should be cited in Turabian format.

Annotated Bibliography
This is a major assignment in the course.
The annotated bibliography is a key component of the scaffolded process of research writing. It demonstrates your ability to identify appropriate scholarly sources in different media; it encourages you to reflect on the materials you have read in your research; it hones your ability to summarize arguments by distilling the most important information from a scholarly source; and it directs your readers towards more sources on the topic that may be interesting or helpful for them.
The annotated bibliography should be undertaken only after your research questions have been approved and you have conducted a broad initial survey of potential sources.
Assignment: Compose an annotated bibliography of FIVE scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources related to your research question. Your sources must include scholarly book chapters and scholarly articles, and it may include scholarly sources on the web. Your bibliography should use APA or MLA citation style, and each of your annotations should be between 150-250 words long. Please see the “Guidelines” below for more information.
*
Guidelines for the Annotated Bibliography
What is an annotated bibliography?
· An annotated bibliography is a list of sources (such as scholarly articles and/or books) that illustrates different points of view about a topic. It’s useful to think of an annotated bibliography as a presentation of “the conversation” that scholars are having regarding a specific topic. An annotated bibliography allows you see what research has been done about your topic, and how your research could fit into the larger conversation. The annotated bibliography is very often the point of departure for a larger research project or paper.
What is the form of an annotated bibliography?*
· In an annotated bibliography, each citation to a source is followed by an annotation—a brief (approximately 150-250 words) description and evaluation of the text. The sources in your annotated bibliography must be listed in alphabetical order. Use MLA or APA citation style when listing your sources. If you are not familiar with these citation styles, please consult a current research handbook or go to the DYC Library’s .
· The annotation follows the citation. The annotation is a brief (150-250 words) summary and evaluation of the scholarly source. The annotation usually contains the following components:
· A brief but thoughtful summary of the points of the scholarly book chapter, article, or web source that are relevant to your research question.
· An evaluation of the source, where you critically assess the reliability or validity of the author’s claims.
· A statement about how the author contributes to “the conversation.”
*Note: Different professors may have more specific requirements for your annotated bibliography; always be sure to review these requirements and speak with your professor or with a Writing Center tutor if you have any questi.

Compare and Contrast Critique
Guidelines and Rubric
Students shall locate one source of popular psychology (i.e., pop psychology) and one source of
empirical research. Sources of pop psychology include television shows (e.g., Dr. Phil video clip on
YouTube) or internet sources (e.g., blogs or news snippets). Empirical research should come from a
literature search in PsycINFO.
After locating these two sources, students are to critique the merit of the information using critical thinking
concepts and standards. Students should use basic APA style guidelines (1” margin, 12 point Times New
Roman font, double-spaced) and critiques should total 2-3 pages. Critiques should address the following:
1. What is the question or issue addressed?
2. Who is asking this question?
3. What data and facts are used to support the assertion? Where do these data and facts
come from?
4. Be sure to provide a link or a source the non-empirical reference as well!
5. What inference is reached based on these data? Do these data, in fact, support the claim
being made?
6. Are there other points of view or ways of explaining the results or assertion made?
7. Is this a reliable source of information based on your analysis?

The introduction of this paper will involve introducing the source: Provide the author, the title, and the context (where you found the source, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.)
You will then go on to evaluate the source on two levels:
Credibility:
Using the information in this unit as a guide, evaluate the source’s authenticity and reliability. Look at all the information that you can find about the source to establish the author’s (or sponsor’s) trustworthiness.
Usefulness:
Using a combination of summary and analysis, examine the source on a critical level. Determine what the source’s purpose (thesis) is, and how it arrives at that goal. Examine its value to you and the project you are working on. How will it help you prove your own points? How might it come in handy to back up a claim (or address a counter-claim)?
Finally, you will include a conclusion which shows your final assessments on both counts.
1. Source Identification
The introduction of this paper will be introducing the source:
❒ Have you provided the author's name?❒ Have you provided the source title?❒ Have you provided the context (where you found the source, where it was originally published, who sponsored it, etc.)?
2. Source Evaluation
❒ Have you provided a judgment on the source's credibility?❒ Have you used specific examples from the source to illustrate your judgment on credibility?❒ Have you provided a judgment on the source's usefulness?❒ Have you used specific examples from the source to illustrate your judgment on usefulness?
3. Reflection
❒ Have you answered all reflection questions thoughtfully and included insights, observations, and/or examples in all responses?
❒ Are your answers included on a separate page below the main assignment?
B. Reflection Questions
DIRECTIONS:
Below your assignment, include answers to all of the following reflection questions..

Your fourth paragraph should make spatial patterns for the periphery (Ghana). This paragraph should be about 100 words.
Your first paragraph should be a very, very brief introduction (no more than 2 sentences or about 50 words) and the fifth should be a very brief conclusion (no more than two sentences or about 50 words). These make up the 2 in the 3-2- paragraph essay.
