The document discusses WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access), a wireless communication standard. It notes that WiMAX provides broadband wireless connectivity over long distances using microwave transmission from towers. A single WiMAX tower can provide coverage to a large area of up to 3,000 square miles. The document outlines key features of WiMAX including its frequency bands, speed of up to 70 megabits per second, and ability to provide broadband access to remote areas. It also lists some advantages and disadvantages of WiMAX technology.

Introduction:-
1) A WiMAX tower, similar in concept to a cell-
phone tower - A single WiMAX tower can
provide coverage to a very large area as big
as 3,000 square miles (~8,000 square km).
2) A WiMAX receiver - The receiver and antenna
could be a small box or Personal Computer
Memory card, or they could be built into a
laptop the way WiFi access is today

Working of WIMAX:-
A WiMAX tower station can connect directly to the
internet using a high-bandwidth, wired connection.
It can also connect to another WiMAX tower using a
line-of-sight, microwave link.
This connection to a second tower, along with the
ability of a single tower to cover up to 3,000 square miles,
is what allows WiMAX to provide coverage to remote
rural areas.

FEATURES OF WIMAX:-
Frequency bands - 2 to 11 GHz and 10 to 66 GHz
(licensed and unlicensed bands)
Range – 30 mile (50-km) radius from base station
Speed - 70 megabits per second
Coverage-A single tower covers upto 3000 sq.miles so
remote areas can easily get broadband access

Disadvantages of WiMAX
Expensive network
Depends on weather condition
Power consuming
Data rate is slow as compared to fiber optics, satellite
and cables
Mobility suffers when large sized long range antenna
are used.
Efficiency can be hampered by conditions and
increase of connected user if signal strength is not
boosted.
Allocation of bandwidth issues.
10. Wimax vs Wi-fi
• Wifi coverage is limited
to 1.5 miles
• It provide Local area
network.
• Wifi needs effort to stay
connected with a
specification access
point.
• It is a low cost network.
• It offers short range of
data transfer.
WiMAX coverage is
about 30 miles.
It provides (MAN).
WiMAX network
provides Quality of
Service(QoS).
It is a high cost
network.
It offers high speed of
broadband access
