Ambiguity of American Gothic Anxieties
Since the 19h century, American Gothic fiction started to exist independently from the British type.
In fact, the latter was marked by its use of fantastic, externalized and metaphysical elements as
opposed to the boundaries of American Gothic fiction in which were expressed by historical,
internalized, racial and psychological characteristics. (Edwards, XVII) In Edgar Allan Poe s The
Raven, Fall of the House of Usher and The Tell tale heartand The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym
and in Charles Broken Brown s Edgar Huntly expresses a transformation of certain gothic
conventions to an American setting which are the result of 19th century ... Show more content on

In many gothic fictions, Native Americans are the villains of the story, as white American
writers have projected their sense of evil upon the native inhabitants. (Crow 137) This negative
image towards this group is the reality of the 19th century anxiety of miscegenation, and the fear
of wilderness. A shadowed forest, the possibility of an Indian lurking in the dark ready to attack
and the unknown are features of the wilderness in which created boundaries from the civilized
town to the savage forest, from consciousness and waking to unconscious and dreaming. In
Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown, the feeling of dread and the unknown draws itself into
Brown s mind as he journeys into the gloomy forest. Brown, like most Americans, drew negative
images of Native Americans and their land of wilderness as he spoke: There may be a devilish
Indian behind every tree. (Hawthorne, 606) Moreover, when Brown reaches the witch meeting, he
sees Indians or powwow priests interacting in the evil ritual with people who follow puritan beliefs.
The hypocritical aspect of Goodman Brown s community is still seen as less demonic than that of
the Indians, as they are always portrayed as the lesser breed . Goodman Brown attest that the
natives who had often scared their native forest with more hideous incantations than any known to
English witchcraft (Hawthorne 612).
Conveyed as demonic and adversary creatures, Indians were a common

Differences Between Traditional And Modern Society
A society s progressively evolution has based a process of collective conditions and consensus,
reversal parties which had obsolete ideologies. Besides, a society s changing in which
individually participates, then a society is prepared to innovate until a cooperative opinion is
fulfilled. That a process of society growth causes two different definitions: tradition and modernity.
There are numerous viewpoints and conversations between traditional and modern society. For
example, in traditional society, in the words of Thompson, the child labour was an intrinsic part of
the agricultural and industrial economy before 1780, and remained so until rescued by the school
(Thompson, 1991, p. 121). However, within modern society, Conlin mentioned the argument of
Karl Polanyi the economy has a life of its own (Conlin, 2015). The questions arise, whether the
tradition is more brutal to people or community than modernity? Is modernity drifting apart from
tradition as a heretic? Therefore, to compare two societies this essay will provide the main view of
modern society s traits and conducts more conform the human beings, to compare two societies,
and this essay will only elaborate an opinion is more sympathetic to the modernity. This essay will
first state a brief description of tradition and modernity, to explain the distinction between two
societies. Then will explore the attribute of traditional society while it also references more

Australia s Lack Of International Competitiveness
External stability is an aim of government policy that seeks to promote sustainability on the
external accounts so that Australia can service its foreign liabilities in the medium to long run
and avoid currency volatility. Australia has persistently had a high CAD around 4.2% of GDP
since the mid 1980s. Australia has also experienced a rising terms of trade to 130.0 in late 2011
due to the commodities boom as a result of the industrialization of the BRICs, whereby Australia
has experienced high export and national income, but has resulted in less competitiveness in
other sectors due to the high AUD, causing the Dutch disease whereby non commodity sectors
lose competitiveness. Similarly is can be seen in its narrow export base whereby in 2012 13 one
third of export revenue came from coal and iron ore ($96 billion from 300 billion), furthermore
57% of Australian export revenue is made up of mineral and energy exports, whereby Australian
growth has been largely fuelled by commodity exports and mining boom. Australia s lack of
international competitiveness as a result of geographical location and small population, as well as
the decline of the manufacturing industry to overseas low cost producers, with the problem being
further increased by the high AUD exchange rate, as a result of the mining boom. The fall in
domestic production has led to an increase in imports and a fall in productive innovation compared
to advanced economies has led to a rise in CAD. The growth of

Perfect Competition In The Tapese Market
In this scenario, the Tapese people of the island of Tap are being exposed to two market structures,
perfect competition and a monopoly. A perfectly competitive market is a hypothetical market where
competition is at its greatest possible level and some key characteristics of a perfectly competitive
market are, many buyers and sellers, a homogeneous product, which is one that cannot be
distinguished from competing products from different suppliers. In other words, the product has
essentially the same physical characteristics and quality as similar products from other suppliers.
Furthermore, a perfectly competitive market has perfect information, they are price takers, and

The Unrevealed Truth
In this essay I will be summarizing the myths to the truths, of the movie Kingdom of Heaven to
the real life history facts. Therefore Hollywood changed the facts to myths. I will be focusing
on the longbow creation, relationships, and killing Arabs. In the movie Kingdom of Heaven, the
longbow was used in the time of the movie. Unfortunately the longbow was really invented
around 1180 C.E.. Created by the Celts in Wales. Which the longbow was not really used by the
English military until the 1300s. A longbow is a an incredibly strong piece of wood roughly 6
feet tall and 5/8 inch wide. The longbow started becoming a great, well known weapon. The
Hundred Years War was where the longbow really showed its strength. In some of the war s most
decisive battles the longbow was the weapon that turned the tides. One memorable example: The
Battle of Crecy War.
Relationships in the movie Kingdom of Heaven was not one hundred percent accurate. There is
actually no given proof or records of any romance between Sibylla, (Balian alleged wife in the
movie) and Balian. But really, Sibylla and Baldwin, Balian brother, had love interest between each
other. Sibylla was the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Research Paper On Singapore Maid
Singapore maid problems you probably have them when you employ a maid in Singapore via a
Singapore maid services agency.
As a side note, please note that Singapore maids are also known as Singapore domestic helpers,
au pair, foreign domestic workers, caregivers, ah mahs , or nannies. Some even take them as
Singapore babysitters! The more experienced maids are generally known as Singapore transfer
maids.
Herein lies the paradox in Singapore maid employment: you are frustrated when you don t have a
maid, and you are just as frustrated when you have a maid.
Many Singapore maid problems stem from miscommunication or misunderstanding. This is
especially so if your Singapore domestic helper is weak in English (more so for Indonesian maids
than Filipino maids) or has difficulty in understanding what you want her to do. This can happen
for both new or Singapore transfer maids. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is despite your efforts in screening the Singapore maid or having a professional Singapore
maid services agency shortlist the girl.
In Singapore maid employment, the maid may also have a change of heart about working with
you, for whatever reasons. However, she doesn t know what to say to you, and as such, she goes
on to spoil the show , so to speak, so that you will fire her. In that case, you are the one who doesn t
want her, and not the other way round.
Singapore maid problems can also arise from the Singapore maid getting sick or worse, getting
pregnant. Some of them may even run away for whatever reasons. The list can go on and on.
So, how can you deal with these problems? Quite frankly, I don t have the perfect solution.
However, here are a few points for your consideration. They are philosophical, and it is okay if you
don t agree with them.
Let s start off with a simple understanding about life and draw a parallel with Singapore maid

The study sought to address and understand how the dumb jock stereotype influences a student s
academic self concept and academic identity. Student athletes have multiple identities while in
college which can be influenced by stereotype threat. Academic identity and athletic identity both
heavily influence a student s self perception. The researchers surveyed collegiate athletes across
gender, race, ethnicity, athletic division, and sport about their experiences as student athletes at
their respective institutions. The authors presented data they collected to understand students
experiences of stereotype threat, examined implications of the findings, and gave recommendations

The assessment created was a survey collecting self reported data from students who received an
electronic questionnaire and elected to respond. The Structural Equation Model seems appropriate
for assessing the relationships between variables selected as it relates to athletic identity, academic
identity, and coaches perspectives.
Colleges and universities were chosen to participate in the study based on connections and
recommendations from experts working with athletes in higher education as well as through,
snowball references and cold calls. After going through the Institutional Review Board, internal
contacts provided the survey to student athletes using existing listservs. This approach gave
students the option to opt out of the survey. The rate of return for the survey was 18.32% which
was less than 1/5th of the students contacted. This approach to collecting data did not result in a
high enough rate of return to accurately represent subpopulations of student athletes, who likely
opted out of the study because of its focus on educational experiences. The snowball approach to
collecting data is not representative of students, colleges, or universities. Most of the respondents

The Kingdom of Heaven is an epic film directed and produced by Ridley Scott, and written by
William Monahan, filmed in Morocco. The story of the Kingdom of Heaven is set during the
Crusades of the 12th century, and is basically about the life of Balian, a French blacksmith, who
defends the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the Muslims and reclaims the city from the Christians.
In this story, I could travel back in time to experience life during the era of the Crusades.
To better understand the Kingdom of Heaven, it is important to know what the Crusades were. The

Nevertheless, these expeditions influenced great transformations in the medieval world. They
have weakened feudal aristocracy, strengthened royal power, and made possible the expansion
of the market. Eastern civilization contributed much to European cultural enrichment,
promoting intellectual development. Never again was Jerusalem dominated by Christians, but
the movements on the way to the Holy Land expanded relationships with the known world at the
time. The first hour of Kingdom of Heaven is decisive for the rest of the film. It is in these
moments that we will meet Balian, a blacksmith who is devastated after he lost his wife who had
committed suicide. It is important to say that suicide was considered to be an irredeemable sin,
for example, the church believed suicide was a road to hell. Balian has no prospects in life
when he receives a visit from Baron Godfrey of Ibelin. He introduces himself as Balian s father
and invites him to become a knight and defend Jerusalem, ruled by King Baldwin IV, who is a
leper hidden behind a mask of iron. Godfrey knows the difficult moment that Balian is going
through, so he introduces him to Jerusalem (presented in the film as the new world where love
exists instead of hate, a multi ethnic city, sacred to three religions, strategic gateway to the East
and to the West) as a journey of redemption in which his son will redeem himself of his sins and
he will save the soul of the suicidal wife. After speaking this, Balian cannot

Essay about The Works of William Harvey
The Works of William Harvey
SYNOPSIS
William Harvey was a distinguished physician of the seventeenth century. Harvey was educated by
some of the great scientists of his time and was highly knowledgeable of the scientist theories
preceding his time. Harvey was greatly intrigued by the views of the ancient Aristotle and developed
a number of his own ideas based on Aristotle s theories. It was from Aristotle s theory of the
primacy of blood that allowed Harvey to make breakthroughs about circulation and generation of
animals. His advancements greatly enhanced the study of anatomy. Harvey also revolutionized the
means by which science was performed through the use of innovative, investigational techniques.

This disproved the common view of preformation (Pagel 33). He published his final writings in the
Essays on the Generation of Animals. After a productive and eventful life, William Harvey died in
London on June 3, 1657.
Through his investigation founded on beliefs of Aristotle, William Harvey was able to
hypothesize on the movement of blood in the body. Prior to William Harvey s research , the
medical view of blood in the body came from a Greek doctor by the name of Galen. Galen
explained the flow of blood as a to and fro movement being pumped by the veins and arteries
themselves. Galen also believed that blood was made and then used up in the body. His
conclusions were drawn mainly from outer appearances (Bayon 444). This made Harvey s work
more accurate because he performed specific experiments and calculations. One reason Harvey
was able to determine the movement of blood through the body was founded in Aristotle s belief
of the perfection of circular motion because it is continuous path (Pagel 28). William Harvey
combined this idea with Arsitotle s view of the power of the heart to act independently of the
brain. From these notions, Harvey created the theory of a constant circulation of blood throughout
the body by the pumping of the heart. He began researching his hypothesis with a hen s egg. He
discovered that the first drops of blood in the hen s egg eventually gave

Weathering The Storm Of Hurricane Katrina
Weathering the Storm On the morning of Monday, August 29, 2005, in southeast Louisiana,
hurricane Katrina made its second landfall. It began as a category one hurricane in the Bahamas
and crossed the southern tip of Florida into the Gulf of Mexico, where is mixed with the warm

The children in the family can t seem to bother with the possibility of the hurricane being anything

indication of a hurricane s intensity based on its maximum sustained winds. (Allen) The scale,
from one to five, is setup to be very easy to understand for the general public, however it still
does not clearly convey the amount of damage that can be sustained from a category one
hurricane as opposed to a category five hurricane. A category one hurricane is classified as having
winds between seventy four and ninety five mile per hour sustained winds with a damage rating
being described as having very dangerous winds will produce some damage. Category two has
winds between ninety six and one hundred and ten miles per hour, category three has winds

Going Solo Roald Dahl Summary
Going Solo, Roald Dahl s memoir of his work in East Africa and his service in the RAF, covers
the buildup to World War II and his involvement in it. In the book mention is made of the Suez
Canal. The Suez Canal plays a large role in the memoir as an important place when he crossed to
Africa. In 1854 Ferdinand de Lesseps, a French former diplomat, persuaded the Viceroy of Egyptto

However, it is difficult to compare body fat percentages, due to the different measurement error
associated with each method (Duthie et al., 2003). These limitations lead researchers and coaches

Rugby players require leg power to, jump and lift in the lineout, during the initial push in the
scrum, for tackling and for explosive acceleration (Duthie et al. 2006). The development of
explosive leg power is vital for all participants of rugby. The forwards require power in the line
outs and scrummage situations. Lineout s, require taller forwards, they can achieve greater
jumping height, resulting in competitive lineouts (Quarrie et al., 1996).The back line players
need the ability to accelerate over short distances and to make and break tackles (Nicholas 1997).
One test of explosive leg power is the vertical jump test (Carlson et al 1994, Nicholas 1997). As
the backrow forwards are required to jump during the lineout, the specificity of the test for these
players is increased.
Grip strength is required for players to bind properly in the scrum, thus the grip strength would be a
useful tool for forwards (Quarrie Wilson, 2000). The Harpenden grip strength dynamometer has
been found to possess excellent test retest reliability (Balogun

Some years ago a new form of recreation came about known as an Off Highway Vehicle(OHV).
Today these high powered, light weight vehicles come in many forms with anywhere from four
to two wheels. There are many areas across the United States for such vehicles to be driven but
as of today there are some groups out there who wish to close the areas in which these vehicles
can be used. One area in particular, located outside of Yuma on the California and Arizona border

you look more deeply into the issues that are really at hand. Now that the CBD has no claims
that support what they actually stand for, that being of something environmentally related, they
must now tread onto foreign territory saying such things as While most people who come to the
Imperial Sand Dunes respect the law and each other, as ABCNEWS reported, crimes such as
alcohol and drug abuse and acts of violence and vandalism have grown in recent years and

vehicles mixed with violence, It s just a crazy area (James Gilbert). These are the new arguments
coming forth from the sierra club activists now that their bet which they had so heavily weighted
their chips has fallen through. To make statements such as this clearly shows the weaknesses in
the CBD s argument because they have had to leave their original stance and move onto
something that does not concern them what so ever. To make a claim such as this would be the
same as if the CBD said there should be no more rock and roll concerts because of the violence
and drug use that is associated with them. The aforementioned claim is of no relevance to what the
CBD is arguing for and in turn should be immediately

Artemis Vs Amaterasu Essay
Amaterasu and Artemis are two gods that unsurprisingly enough are vastly different. What I found
though was it was not what power they held that made them different, but the culture that
surrounded them. That the birth of two goddesses could divide how one is closer to us humans
than the other. Of how a role in a pantheon and just a few myths can shatter you re understanding
of why a goddess has power. Last of all, how the nature of what symbolizes a godhow we perceive
her.
In discussing the two goddesses I find that is important to look back their conception and how they
were brought into being comes to affect our understanding from a theological standpoint. As with
most gods in ancient myth, the birth of the two is unusual but for two very different reasons.
Starting with Artemis it should be noted that she actually does have parents, in this case, Zeus and
Leto. Her birth on the island of Delos where she was able to act as midwife for her brother
Apollo. Now, what s interesting here is that besides for Leto s prolonged pregnancy that was
brought forth by Hera is that Artemis s birth is very human. It s the act of acting as a midwife that

If the microkernel has networking capabilities, there is also no principal objection in placing
those servers on remote machines (which run the same microkernel). 13. Q: Explain the principal
operation of a page based distributed shared memory system. A: Page based DSM makes use of
the virtual memory capabilities of an operating system. Whenever an application addresses a
memory location that is currently not mapped into the current physical memory, a page fault
occurs, giving the operating system control. The operating system can then locate the referred
page, transfer its content over the network, and map it to physical memory. At that point, the
application can continue. PROBLEM SOLUTIONS FOR CHAPTER 1 3 14. Q: What is the
reason for developing distributed shared memory systems? What do you see as the main problem
hindering efficient implementations? A: The main reason is that writing parallel and distributed
programs based on message passing primitives is much harder than being able to use shared
memory for communication. Efficiency of DSM systems is hindered by the fact, no matter what
you do, page transfers across the network need to take place. If pages are shared by different
processors, it is quite easy to get into a state similar to thrashing in virtual memory systems. In the
end, DSM systems can never be faster than message passing solutions, and will generally be

Gandhi Vs. Greek Heroes
The definition of heroes has been evolved variously through the ages. Greeks defined heroes as
brave, strong men or demigods who accomplished great quests during their lives. People
nowadays may define heroes as people who are changing the world to become a better place. A
hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.1 Both Greek heroes
and modern day heroes complete tasks which are nearly impossible for a normal human. Mohandas
Karamchand Gandhi, who was the leader of activists in getting India independence from Britain, is
a great heroto many people. Although Gandhi and Greek heroes have many similar and different
aspects about being a hero, there are great reasons what make Gandhi superior.
Both Gandhi and Greek heroes have great perseverance and endurance to achieve their goals.
Gandhi was imprisoned many times in his life, but he never gave up, and tried his best to achieve
India Independence and peace. One of his great efforts is The Salt Satyagraha which he marched
200 miles which was accompanied by thousands of people because the British imposed a tax on
salt and made it illegal for Indians to produce from sea water.2 Greek heroes also had great
perseverance in completing their quests. Jason, for example, complete a quest to get the Golden
Fleece by enduring all difficulties and dangers and Heracles also completed his twelve labors
because of his great perseverance and effort. Therefore, perseverance and hard work are important

attract a large number of candidates. Newspaper ads are also less costly compared to using
headhunters for finding the right candidate.
Recruitment Fairs:
Recruitment fairs can be very cost and time efficient, particularly in to fulfill bulk recruitment needs
of the organization. This also gives companies the opportunity to connect with other potential talent
that might not be immediately required by the company, but, helps in building a great talent
pipeline for future talent needs.
Having compiled a list of candidates who are interested in the job, the task now is to select one of
them. Below are some types of selection procedures and their advantages:
Application forms

The Anaconda Plan In 1861
At the onset of the war in 1861, plans were already being developed by both sides on how to defeat
the other in the shortest amount of time. The Union was faced with trying to defeat a secession
without destroying the Confederate States with the ultimate goal of returning the states to the
Union. One suggestion was made by the standing General in Chief of the U.S. Army, Winfield Scott
, to President Lincoln and later deemed the Anaconda Plan . The plan would not be put in action
until 1862 and would contribute to the degrading of the Confederacy s ability to wage war and
ultimate surrender to the Union. In 1861, Winfield Scott the standing General in Chief of the U.S.

Extraction and Characterization of Proteins
EXTRACTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PROTEINS Abstract Different techniques and
principles for protein extraction and characterization were demonstrated in this experiment.
Various proteins were extracted from different sources: 1.67 g yeast invertase, 1.03 g egg white
albumin, and 5.15 g of milk casein. Activity assay for invertase was performed using Benedict s
test and the enzymes inverting action on sucrose was confirmed. Warburg Christian Method and
Bradford Assay were also employed to determine the protein concentration in the albumin and the
casein samples. The concentrations for the albumin and casein samples were found to be 0.519
and 0.327 mg/mL, respectively based on Warburg Christian Assay; and 6.5x10 3В¬ and 1.9x10 2

As a result, the interactions between protein molecules exceed protein water interactions, and the
solubility decreases. Moreover, the differences in the amino acid sequence makes proteins differ
in their salting in and salting out behavior. This is the basis for the fractional precipitation of
proteins by means of salt. Most commonly used salt is ammonium sulfate because it is available
in highly purified form and because of its high solubility. (Boyer, 2000) Proteins can also be
fractionally precipitated by adjusting the pH, temperature and dielectric constant. Variations in pH
also change the state of ionization of the functional groups, and hence, the net charge of the
protein. Usually, the protein s solubility is at its least at the isoelectric point pI and increases on
either side of the pI. At the pI, the net charge of the protein is zero and the protein molecules do
not repel each other. As a result, protein protein interactions are increased and the solubility is at its
lowest. (Boyer, 2000) Meanwhile, if temperature is increased denatures the proteins. Proteins then
unfold and the non polar groups which were previously in the interior of the molecule become
exposed. This leads to a decrease in the solubility of the protein in aqueous environment. Addition of
ethanol, methanol, acetone and the like decreases the dielectric constant and thus decreases protein
s solubility. (Boyer, 2000) The

The Periodontal Disease ( Dental Plaque )
The periodontal diseases are highly prevalent and can affect up to 90% of the worldwide
population. Gingivitis ,the mildest form of periodontal disease, is caused by the bacterial biofilm
(dental plaque) that accumulates on teeth adjacent to the gingiva (gums). However, gingivitis does
not affect the underlying supporting structures of the teeth and is reversible. Gingivitis, the
mildest form of periodontal disease ,is highly prevalent and readily reversible by simple, effective
oral hygiene. Gingivitis affects 50 90% of adults worldwide, depending on its precise definition3.
Inflammation that extends deep into the tissues and causes loss of supporting connective tissue
and alveolar bone is known as periodontitis. Periodontitis results in the formation of soft tissue
pockets or deepened crevices between the gingiva and tooth root. Severe periodontitis can result in
loosening of teeth, occasional pain and discomfort, impaired mastication, and eventual tooth loss.
Although prevalence estimates differ on the basis of how the disease is defined, the prevalence,
severity, and rate of disease progression clearly varies worldwide.4,5. Periodontitis is generally
more prevalent in developing countries,6 although disease may not necessarily be extensive or
severe in indigenous populations 7.

Examples Of Mise En Scene In The Matrix
The film The Matrix is considered to be a great science fiction and action film, as the special
effects were ahead of its time and the story is ageless. The Matrix was released on March 31, 1999.
Although many people are not aware of the mise en scene in the film, unknowingly it plays an
important role in the film. Without the setting, lighting, costume/makeup, and the behaviour of the
figures, the film would be uninteresting. The following essay will discuss how the maze cubicle
office, the dark lighting, the black costumes and sunglasses and the seriousness of the figures all
contributes to the theme of captivity verse freedom in the scene where Mr. Anderson tries to escape
from Agent Smith and his co workers.
Firstly, one of the elements of mise en scene is the setting. The setting takes place in an office.
The office is in a very high building and it looks like a maze cube. The setting is very realistic as
many companies use those maze cube offices, however, the use of the maze cube reflects the
theme of freedom verses captivity. Usually when people are in a maze they are trapped and are

The figures in this scene were very serious, they barely showed any emotion. Neo, on the other
hand displayed fear and terror, which contributes to the theme of captivity verses freedom.
Consequently, when looking at the behaviour of the figures it is evident that the director used the
fear of Neo s fear to evoke a feeling of concern in the viewer. Therefore, based on how the actors
react provokes a feeling of suspense within the viewer.
In conclusion, as we assess this specific scene in The Matrix it is evident how significantly the
director used the mise en scene to articulate the theme of captivity verses freedom in the film. The
mise en scene also creates a feeling of nervousness within the viewer that could not have been
achieved without the expert use of the mise en scene in the

The Painting Square At La Trinite
The painting Square at La TrinitГ© (Le Square de La TrinitГ©) (1875) by Pierre Auguste Renoir
is located at the RISD museum in Providence, RI. This is an oil painting on canvas, surrounded by
an ornate gold frame. Square at La TrinitГ© is a pastel colored landscape scene with nature, figures
and buildings in the background. The main focus of the paintingis the two people in the right hand
corner, one a female and the other a male who are strolling through a lively garden. During the 19th
centuryimpressionist artists wanted to capture life as they saw it happening. Another artist who had
a similar style to Renoir was Monet who painted works such as Beach at Trouville (1870) where he
painted his wife sitting on the beach taking part in middle class leisure. Renoir s work demonstrates
the impressionist technique important to the 19th century, evident by the way he captured middle
class leisure in a modern subject matter.
In Square at La TrinitГ© there are very prominent vertical lines. The two figures in the right
corner of the painting are vertical figures and are what the viewer is initially drawn to when first
looking at the image. Another really distinct vertical line is the tree on the left hand side of the
painting. That tree stands out in particular because of its dark color compared to the right side of
the painting. The buildings in the background are made up of both horizontal and vertical lines.
The roof and windows in particular are examples of horizontal lines. The

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a Safe Treatment for...
A. Thesis Statement
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe mental illness in which the brain is
stimulated with a strong electrical current which induces a seizure. The seizure rearranges the brain
s neurochemistry and results in an elevation of mood. This essay asks: Is ECT any safer and more
effective in treating mood disorders than drug therapies? This treatment has a controversial history
ever since it was first introduced in 1938. I intend to argue that electroconvulsive therapy is indeed
a safe treatment of mental disorders when other treatments have failed. Due to the development of
safer and less traumatic ways of administering ECT, the treatment has made a comeback, is greatly
used, and proves to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
C. Central Issue
Since its beginning, the issue of the safety and efficacy of ECT has existed, and thus its use has
been always remained controversial (Weiner Krystal, 1994). Even with the modern development of
ECT, some of the same issues are still prevalent. There are two sides here: the advocates that
support the use of the treatment, and those who do not. This is explored next.
The first argument for the use of ECT is the fact that majority of studies and modern literature show
that this treatment is very successful in treating many psychological disorders. Evidence seems
strongest for the efficacy in severely depressed patients, as well as manic patients (Reisner, 2003).
When looking at those with major depression, the likelihood of substantial improvement ranges
from 80 90% (Weiner Krystal, 1994). In manic patients, Gabbard concludes that 80% of patients
show marked improvement (2001, p.1272).
The second argument for the use of ECT is that successful treatments induce remission in
episodes of illness (Gabbard, 2001). The evidence supporting this conclusion is compelling and
includes a sizable number of well controlled sham ECT studies. In these studies, patients were
randomized to receive real ECT or sham ECT (which involves anaesthesia but no electrical
stimulation), thus providing for precise double blind tests of efficacy (Gabbard, 2001). One
misconception is that it provides a cure . This is not the case it does not produce a cure any

Confirmation In The 1910 Encyclical Quam Singulari Of...
Confirmation is a sacrament that has become an enigma wrapped in a riddle that ends with an
open ended question for teens all over the world. It has become an increasingly tough Sacrament
to define and explain to those coming to the sacrament of choice. This book was chosen by most
of us, not because of the size but because we have all been called upon to talk to confirmation
classes and talking more intelligently and genuinely is what this generation is striving to receive.
Since there is so much confusion over this sacrament it is imperative we try to live up to the
exhortation in paragraph 59 of Sacrosanctum Concilium. It is therefore of the highest importance
that the faithful should easily understand the sacramental signs (SC 59). Timothy Gabrielli s book
is meant to give the thinking and theology behind how this sacrament has been shaped by the
twentieth century culture. This book is meant to stir up conversation and understanding of the need
for more priority from the church and its leaders in the celebration of this sacrament. The main idea
running through this book is the 1910 encyclical Quam Singulari of Pius X as the stick of dynamite
that blew up the sacrament order. It appears to me it was the light that illuminated the need for a
change in the timing of first communion. The unforeseen consequence was the upheaval and
confusion around Confirmation since it was not mentioned in the encyclical. The first chapter starts
with the quote from the encyclical and

Why is the role families play in the process of selecting and using an assistive technology so
important? Well for one, the parents or guardians, of a child with a disability that requires assistive
technology, knows their child like the back of their hand. They know what their child is capable of
using and what will be beneficial for their child to succeed. Assistive technology refers to the
devices and services that can be used to increase, maintain, or improve a student s capabilities. This
means that parents should have a good idea on whether or not a device is right for their child.
Usually when parents learn about assistive technology and the numerous opportunities it can

1917 the company was renamed Boeing Airplane Company. Also in 1917 Boeing would go on to

This allowed a pilot who trained in one aircraft to virtually be able to fly the other thus reducing
crew training cost and increasing productivity for the airlines. As the years passed technology
increased. Traditionally when Boeing designed an airplane they would have to build a mock up.
With the advancement of the computer, the need to build mock ups were no more. The 777 was
developed fully on computers. In 1991 Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and General Dynamics teamed
up to build a new stealth fighter for the United States military. The aircraft would later be called
the F 22 Raptor. In 1995 Boeing joined Ukrainian, Russian, and Norway, to form Sea Launch. It
was a commercial launch services that sent satellites into orbit. In 2008 Boeing began taking
orders for its new 787 Dreamliner. With fuel costs on the rise in the late 2000s, many airlines saw
the 787 as a way to upgrade their fleet. The 787 was faced with several production problems. Some
of which included the failure of a crucial fuselage section. Consequently, the 787 was not delivered

Separating Wall Columns Into The Separation Of Liquefied...
A series of articles have been published from the Yeungnam University mainly led by Long and
Lee that relates to the incorporation of dividing wall columns into the separation of liquefied
natural gas. Each base case had slight variances and the proposed dividing wall column design was
also distinctive.
1.5.1.1 First case study
Figure 29 Double Dividing Wall Column for Natural Gasseparation (Long and Lee 2011)
In this natural gas liquid (LNG) separation study conducted by Long and Lee (2011), the base
separation system includes a sequence of depropaniser, debutanizer and deisobutanizer which

This arrangement reduced energy costs by 30.5%, which is a large jump from the previous
sequence but there are no logical explanations provides as to how they reached this particular
arrangement. The three columns were then integrated into a single Agrawal column (figure 20)
with a pressure of 14 bar, but this resulted in the required energy increasing by 13.5% from the
conventional sequence showing the unsuitability of integrating the three columns into one (Long
and Lee 2011).
1.5.1.2 Second case study
In a second study conducted by Long and Lee (2012), they aimed at optimising and integrating a
deethanizer and depropaniser, which operate at 30.98 and 17.5 bar respectively. The inspiration
of this particular study came from a patented document conducted in 1996 that presented
improvements in demethanizing and deethanizing stages of Liquefied Natural Gas separation
(Manley 1997). This can be challenging as a balance between a high and low pressure must be
found when integrating the two columns into a single dividing wall column. A high pressure will
increase the temperature of the top stream and lower refrigerant cost but column and equipment
wall thickness will have to be significantly increased. So a balance between the operating and
capital cost must be found with the selection of operating pressure. However Long and Lee
(2012) opted to go with a low pressure of 17.5bar to minimise capital costs and reboiler duties
resulting in a 31.74% decrease in operating

The Theory Of International Politics
Theory of international politics is a Classic because it gives a chance to recognise not just the
international system but also history and ethos in context. Gives individuals a chance to think
outside the box and perhaps understand the international state much clearer. Waltz s notes that
Polarity is the only important change in system structure that we can expect under anarchy. Waltz
s theory of international politics is proven to be an unusual powerful volume, creating new
discussions and giving new incentive to existing ones. For example, the book commenced a
debate over whether state s concerns over relative gains impeded cooperation and added
momentum to the question of whether bipolar or multipolar international systems were more war
prone (Griffiths, 2007). However, a flaw is that his theory is too reliant on material understanding
of power and misses the social. On the other hand, regardless of his dependency on material
understanding, his theory is still practical and helps to understand issues that have occurred from a
neo realist perspective. To the extent that structural realism sought to explain the cold war by
referring to bipolarity , Waltz s argued that the cold war was firmly rooted in the structure of post
war international politics and will last if that structure endures (Waltz, 1989). A downfall of waltz s
ideology is that it s difficult to settle with the decline in interstate war and the increase in
multilateral co operation among state. Moreover

A Brief Note On The State Of Diabetics Essay
Diabetics in Hidalgo County
Norma Valdez Rosa
South University Online May 23, 2016
DIABETICS IN HIDALGO COUNTY One of the most important health problems in my
community is Diabetes. The combination of an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle, the lack of
health education and access to preventative care services all contribute to this growing problem.
The prevalence of diabetes in Mexican Americans living in Hidalgo County for both men and
women is 25.9 %, or 1 in 3.8 people, Hidalgo County s rates are double the statewide average of
9.7% for Texas and 9.3 % for the US. The three top causes of death in adults in Hidalgo County
are: cardiac, cancer and diabetes, according to the Texas Department of State HealthServices.
Because of the potential seriousness of diabetes and all its associated medical conditions, serious
attention needs to be given to its prevention especially in light of the emerging epidemic of type 2
diabetes in youth (Bastida, Cuellar Villas, 2001).

provides feasible diets for weight loss. Alexander believes that added sugar directly contributes to
continuous weight gain in modern people. Over the past 40 years, the consumption of added sugar
has increased dramatically in processed foods, and the refined sugars have become critical and
ubiquitous additives for the food industry to enhance flavor and promote sales. At the same time,

diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Specifically, she stressed the strong adverse effects of fructose
on body weight regulation. Fructose is usually added to foods in the form of high fructose corn

remove excessive added sugar intake, particularly fructose, so that your body can regain a healthy
sugar balance. The method contains two major stages, which last 32 days in total. In stage one,
people are deprived of

  • 2. Ambiguity of American Gothic Fiction Julie Fallows 6423747 Sean Moreland November 27, 2012 Ambiguity of American Gothic Anxieties Since the 19h century, American Gothic fiction started to exist independently from the British type. In fact, the latter was marked by its use of fantastic, externalized and metaphysical elements as opposed to the boundaries of American Gothic fiction in which were expressed by historical, internalized, racial and psychological characteristics. (Edwards, XVII) In Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven, Fall of the House of Usher and The Tell tale heartand The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym and in Charles Broken Brown s Edgar Huntly expresses a transformation of certain gothic conventions to an American setting which are the result of 19th century ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In many gothic fictions, Native Americans are the villains of the story, as white American writers have projected their sense of evil upon the native inhabitants. (Crow 137) This negative image towards this group is the reality of the 19th century anxiety of miscegenation, and the fear of wilderness. A shadowed forest, the possibility of an Indian lurking in the dark ready to attack and the unknown are features of the wilderness in which created boundaries from the civilized town to the savage forest, from consciousness and waking to unconscious and dreaming. In Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown, the feeling of dread and the unknown draws itself into Brown s mind as he journeys into the gloomy forest. Brown, like most Americans, drew negative images of Native Americans and their land of wilderness as he spoke: There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree. (Hawthorne, 606) Moreover, when Brown reaches the witch meeting, he sees Indians or powwow priests interacting in the evil ritual with people who follow puritan beliefs. The hypocritical aspect of Goodman Brown s community is still seen as less demonic than that of the Indians, as they are always portrayed as the lesser breed . Goodman Brown attest that the natives who had often scared their native forest with more hideous incantations than any known to English witchcraft (Hawthorne 612). Conveyed as demonic and adversary creatures, Indians were a common ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Differences Between Traditional And Modern Society A society s progressively evolution has based a process of collective conditions and consensus, reversal parties which had obsolete ideologies. Besides, a society s changing in which individually participates, then a society is prepared to innovate until a cooperative opinion is fulfilled. That a process of society growth causes two different definitions: tradition and modernity. There are numerous viewpoints and conversations between traditional and modern society. For example, in traditional society, in the words of Thompson, the child labour was an intrinsic part of the agricultural and industrial economy before 1780, and remained so until rescued by the school (Thompson, 1991, p. 121). However, within modern society, Conlin mentioned the argument of Karl Polanyi the economy has a life of its own (Conlin, 2015). The questions arise, whether the tradition is more brutal to people or community than modernity? Is modernity drifting apart from tradition as a heretic? Therefore, to compare two societies this essay will provide the main view of modern society s traits and conducts more conform the human beings, to compare two societies, and this essay will only elaborate an opinion is more sympathetic to the modernity. • 4. Australia s Lack Of International Competitiveness External stability is an aim of government policy that seeks to promote sustainability on the external accounts so that Australia can service its foreign liabilities in the medium to long run and avoid currency volatility. Australia has persistently had a high CAD around 4.2% of GDP since the mid 1980s. Australia has also experienced a rising terms of trade to 130.0 in late 2011 due to the commodities boom as a result of the industrialization of the BRICs, whereby Australia has experienced high export and national income, but has resulted in less competitiveness in other sectors due to the high AUD, causing the Dutch disease whereby non commodity sectors lose competitiveness. Similarly is can be seen in its narrow export base whereby in 2012 13 one third of export revenue came from coal and iron ore ($96 billion from 300 billion), furthermore 57% of Australian export revenue is made up of mineral and energy exports, whereby Australian growth has been largely fuelled by commodity exports and mining boom. Australia s lack of international competitiveness as a result of geographical location and small population, as well as the decline of the manufacturing industry to overseas low cost producers, with the problem being further increased by the high AUD exchange rate, as a result of the mining boom. The fall in domestic production has led to an increase in imports and a fall in productive innovation compared to advanced economies has led to a rise in CAD. The growth of ... Some even take them as Singapore babysitters! The more experienced maids are generally known as Singapore transfer maids. Herein lies the paradox in Singapore maid employment: you are frustrated when you don t have a maid, and you are just as frustrated when you have a maid. The first hour of Kingdom of Heaven is decisive for the rest of the film. After a productive and eventful life, William Harvey died in London on June 3, 1657. Through his investigation founded on beliefs of Aristotle, William Harvey was able to hypothesize on the movement of blood in the body. Prior to William Harvey s research , the medical view of blood in the body came from a Greek doctor by the name of Galen. Galen explained the flow of blood as a to and fro movement being pumped by the veins and arteries themselves. Galen also believed that blood was made and then used up in the body. His conclusions were drawn mainly from outer appearances (Bayon 444). This made Harvey s work more accurate because he performed specific experiments and calculations. One reason Harvey was able to determine the movement of blood through the body was founded in Aristotle s belief of the perfection of circular motion because it is continuous path (Pagel 28). William Harvey combined this idea with Arsitotle s view of the power of the heart to act independently of the brain. From these notions, Harvey created the theory of a constant circulation of blood throughout the body by the pumping of the heart. He began researching his hypothesis with a hen s egg. Rugby players require leg power to, jump and lift in the lineout, during the initial push in the scrum, for tackling and for explosive acceleration (Duthie et al. 2006). The development of explosive leg power is vital for all participants of rugby. The forwards require power in the line outs and scrummage situations. Moreover, the differences in the amino acid sequence makes proteins differ in their salting in and salting out behavior. This is the basis for the fractional precipitation of proteins by means of salt. Most commonly used salt is ammonium sulfate because it is available in highly purified form and because of its high solubility. (Boyer, 2000) Proteins can also be fractionally precipitated by adjusting the pH, temperature and dielectric constant. Variations in pH also change the state of ionization of the functional groups, and hence, the net charge of the protein. Usually, the protein s solubility is at its least at the isoelectric point pI and increases on either side of the pI. At the pI, the net charge of the protein is zero and the protein molecules do not repel each other. As a result, protein protein interactions are increased and the solubility is at its lowest. (Boyer, 2000) Meanwhile, if temperature is increased denatures the proteins. Proteins then unfold and the non polar groups which were previously in the interior of the molecule become exposed. This leads to a decrease in the solubility of the protein in aqueous environment. Addition of ethanol, methanol, acetone and the like decreases the dielectric constant and thus decreases protein s solubility. (Boyer, 2000) The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Another artist who had a similar style to Renoir was Monet who painted works such as Beach at Trouville (1870) where he painted his wife sitting on the beach taking part in middle class leisure. Renoir s work demonstrates the impressionist technique important to the 19th century, evident by the way he captured middle class leisure in a modern subject matter. In Square at La TrinitГ© there are very prominent vertical lines. The two figures in the right corner of the painting are vertical figures and are what the viewer is initially drawn to when first looking at the image. Another really distinct vertical line is the tree on the left hand side of the painting. That tree stands out in particular because of its dark color compared to the right side of the painting. The buildings in the background are made up of both horizontal and vertical lines. The roof and windows in particular are examples of horizontal lines. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a Safe Treatment for... A. Thesis Statement Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment for severe mental illness in which the brain is stimulated with a strong electrical current which induces a seizure. The seizure rearranges the brain s neurochemistry and results in an elevation of mood. This essay asks: Is ECT any safer and more effective in treating mood disorders than drug therapies? This treatment has a controversial history ever since it was first introduced in 1938. I intend to argue that electroconvulsive therapy is indeed a safe treatment of mental disorders when other treatments have failed. Due to the development of safer and less traumatic ways of administering ECT, the treatment has made a comeback, is greatly used, and proves to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... C. Central Issue Since its beginning, the issue of the safety and efficacy of ECT has existed, and thus its use has been always remained controversial (Weiner Krystal, 1994). Even with the modern development of ECT, some of the same issues are still prevalent. There are two sides here: the advocates that support the use of the treatment, and those who do not. This is explored next. The first argument for the use of ECT is the fact that majority of studies and modern literature show that this treatment is very successful in treating many psychological disorders. Evidence seems strongest for the efficacy in severely depressed patients, as well as manic patients (Reisner, 2003). When looking at those with major depression, the likelihood of substantial improvement ranges from 80 90% (Weiner Krystal, 1994). In manic patients, Gabbard concludes that 80% of patients show marked improvement (2001, p.1272). The second argument for the use of ECT is that successful treatments induce remission in episodes of illness (Gabbard, 2001). The evidence supporting this conclusion is compelling and includes a sizable number of well controlled sham ECT studies. In these studies, patients were randomized to receive real ECT or sham ECT (which involves anaesthesia but no electrical stimulation), thus providing for precise double blind tests of efficacy (Gabbard, 2001). • 30. Confirmation In The 1910 Encyclical Quam Singulari Of... Confirmation is a sacrament that has become an enigma wrapped in a riddle that ends with an open ended question for teens all over the world. It has become an increasingly tough Sacrament to define and explain to those coming to the sacrament of choice. This book was chosen by most of us, not because of the size but because we have all been called upon to talk to confirmation classes and talking more intelligently and genuinely is what this generation is striving to receive. Since there is so much confusion over this sacrament it is imperative we try to live up to the exhortation in paragraph 59 of Sacrosanctum Concilium. It is therefore of the highest importance that the faithful should easily understand the sacramental signs (SC 59). Timothy Gabrielli s book is meant to give the thinking and theology behind how this sacrament has been shaped by the twentieth century culture. This book is meant to stir up conversation and understanding of the need for more priority from the church and its leaders in the celebration of this sacrament. The main idea running through this book is the 1910 encyclical Quam Singulari of Pius X as the stick of dynamite that blew up the sacrament order. It appears to me it was the light that illuminated the need for a change in the timing of first communion. The unforeseen consequence was the upheaval and confusion around Confirmation since it was not mentioned in the encyclical. The first chapter starts with the quote from the encyclical and ... Well for one, the parents or guardians, of a child with a disability that requires assistive technology, knows their child like the back of their hand. They know what their child is capable of using and what will be beneficial for their child to succeed. Assistive technology refers to the devices and services that can be used to increase, maintain, or improve a student s capabilities. This means that parents should have a good idea on whether or not a device is right for their child. A series of articles have been published from the Yeungnam University mainly led by Long and Lee that relates to the incorporation of dividing wall columns into the separation of liquefied natural gas. Each base case had slight variances and the proposed dividing wall column design was also distinctive. 1.5.1.1 First case study Figure 29 Double Dividing Wall Column for Natural Gasseparation (Long and Lee 2011) In this natural gas liquid (LNG) separation study conducted by Long and Lee (2011), the base separation system includes a sequence of depropaniser, debutanizer and deisobutanizer which separated a system the includes ethane, propane, n butane, i butane and heavies (C5+) (Long and Lee 2011). This arrangement reduced energy costs by 30.5%, which is a large jump from the previous sequence but there are no logical explanations provides as to how they reached this particular arrangement. The three columns were then integrated into a single Agrawal column (figure 20) with a pressure of 14 bar, but this resulted in the required energy increasing by 13.5% from the conventional sequence showing the unsuitability of integrating the three columns into one (Long and Lee 2011). 1.5.1.2 Second case study In a second study conducted by Long and Lee (2012), they aimed at optimising and integrating a deethanizer and depropaniser, which operate at 30.98 and 17.5 bar respectively. The inspiration of this particular study came from a patented document conducted in 1996 that presented improvements in demethanizing and deethanizing stages of Liquefied Natural Gas separation (Manley 1997). This can be challenging as a balance between a high and low pressure must be found when integrating the two columns into a single dividing wall column. A high pressure will increase the temperature of the top stream and lower refrigerant cost but column and equipment wall thickness will have to be significantly increased. So a balance between the operating and capital cost must be found with the selection of operating pressure. However Long and Lee (2012) opted to go with a low pressure of 17.5bar to minimise capital costs and reboiler duties resulting in a 31.74% decrease in operating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The Theory Of International Politics Theory of international politics is a Classic because it gives a chance to recognise not just the international system but also history and ethos in context. Gives individuals a chance to think outside the box and perhaps understand the international state much clearer. Waltz s notes that Polarity is the only important change in system structure that we can expect under anarchy. Waltz s theory of international politics is proven to be an unusual powerful volume, creating new discussions and giving new incentive to existing ones. For example, the book commenced a debate over whether state s concerns over relative gains impeded cooperation and added momentum to the question of whether bipolar or multipolar international systems were more war prone (Griffiths, 2007). However, a flaw is that his theory is too reliant on material understanding of power and misses the social. On the other hand, regardless of his dependency on material understanding, his theory is still practical and helps to understand issues that have occurred from a neo realist perspective. To the extent that structural realism sought to explain the cold war by referring to bipolarity , Waltz s argued that the cold war was firmly rooted in the structure of post war international politics and will last if that structure endures (Waltz, 1989). A downfall of waltz s ideology is that it s difficult to settle with the decline in interstate war and the increase in multilateral co operation among state. Moreover ... • 43. The Effects Of Fructose On Body Weight Regulation Anne Alexander, an editorial director of Prevention Magazine, published a diet book three years ago, The Sugar Smart Diet, which reveals the potential cause of the epidemic of obesity and provides feasible diets for weight loss. Alexander believes that added sugar directly contributes to continuous weight gain in modern people. Over the past 40 years, the consumption of added sugar has increased dramatically in processed foods, and the refined sugars have become critical and ubiquitous additives for the food industry to enhance flavor and promote sales. At the same time, the number of obese Americans climbed sharply as well (Harvard Health Letter, 2006). Therefore, Alexander reached the conclusion that the food supply sugarjacked people and sugar overload became a public health crisis that might result in obesity and many other diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Specifically, she stressed the strong adverse effects of fructose on body weight regulation. Fructose is usually added to foods in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which is the primary caloric sweetener in America and is one of the main focuses of this diet book and this paper. The overall goal articulated in the sugar smart diet is to gradually remove excessive added sugar intake, particularly fructose, so that your body can regain a healthy sugar balance.
