4.  A wide range of laws and guidelines have been established to ensure
safety for people and the surrounding environment. Much of this is
due to the high level of toxicity and flammability related to the
sprays, paints, adhesives, and finishing solutions used within a
spray operation.
 Proper assembly, ventilation, and wiring are necessary to
prevent injury to workers resulting from airborne particles. In
the same way, explosions can occur when fumes build up near an
open flame. If, on the off chance, an employee uses a space heater
too close to the work space or within an enclosed area that isn't
properly ventilated, there is a very real risk of explosion.

5. A wide range of imperfections may occur if not treated well inside
a spray booth. With this document we will try to list the most
important of them:
 WATER BLISTERS ON SURFACE
Small blisters on the surface of the paint that can be seen once it
dries.
Caused by: Humidity inthe air, moisture absorbed by the
substrate, condensation due to sudden changes in temperature,
application in wet environment, debris on the Surface or
insufficient drying of the substrate.
 LACK OR LOSS OF PAINT ADHERENCE
The paint layer lifts easily like fish scales.
Caused by: Incorrect preparation of the painted surface,
presenting grease, dust, dirt or moisture. Incorrect surface
sanding. Inadequate primer.
 ORANGE PEEL OR LOOSENING
Rough or granular surface of the paint produced by bad stretching.
Caused by: Fast solvents. Low humidity or high temperature in
the environment. High viscosity Paint. Painted part was too hot.
 CRACKINGS
Small cracks in the paint surface. They can expand to the whole piece.
Caused by: Paint was applyed on a humid, or not completely dry
layer. Incorrect preparation of the painted Surface

6.  SILICONES
Small circular holes appearing on the paint surface.
Caused by: Pollution of the work environment by the use of silicones,
aerosols, etc. Traces of oil in the applyed air.
 SOLVENT BUBBLES OR BOILINGS
Small circular blisters that appear in the surface layer during the drying
process.
Caused by: Pollution in the work environment caused by the use of
silicones, aerosols, etc. Ambient temperature too high. Short period of
evaporation before drying.
 WRINKLINGS
Areas with wrinkles in the surface of the paint during application or drying.
Caused by: Non-uniform drying (excess of thickness, insufficient
evaporation time, no suitable catalyst, etc.). Choosed paint not
compatible with the base coat.
 BLURRINGS
Areas with dullness and a whitish veil.
Caused by: High relative humidity in the environment. Lack of air
exchange during the drying process at room temperature. Paint layers
too think.
 DIRT, DUST OR PARTICLES
Dirt or dust depositing on the wet paint and sticking to it.
Caused by: Insufficient cleaning of the surface to be painted. Presence
of contaminants or debris in the air.

7.  Spray booths provide a clean environment for the vehicle/piece,
protected from dust or particles originated in the working área
 Spray booths provide a uniform airflow and a zero turbulence
environment. This is important because even if some particles
reaches the inside (mostly through workers), the vehicle will be
protected by a thick air layer.

10.  The most important time saving action is performed
during the drying stage of the vehicle/piece. Several drying
options are available including heating system of high efficiency,
with gas-oil, (natural or GLP), gas or direct combustion, for huge
booths or IR and UV dryers for smaller pieces. The main
advantages of the drying process inside a spray booth are: more
fixing of the paint in the substratum, it allows a significant
reduction on the emissions of VOCs, due to the evaporation of
the volatiles because of the heat, more resistance of the Paint to
the impact (mechanical resistance), reduction of the time that
the material to be painted stays in the factory, therefore, less
time of operational input on site.
 There will be also a significant time saving during the
application process, because the vehicle surface has a better
temperature and retains the paint perfectly.

11.  This is a very important point for most spray booths and
one of the main reasons they exist. Most countries have
dedicated laws that forces companies that work with
hazardous VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), to install
booths with severe specifications in order to prevent
health issues on the workers.
 Specifications may vary, but they usually focus on the
airflow intensity, lighting, filtration system, etc.
 When the painter starts spraying paint towards the
vehicle/piece a cloud of hazardous compounds is
released in the air and a simple mask is generally not
enough to avoid inhaling this substances. Even the
simple contact with the skin may result in severe health
conditions after prolonged use.

12. This is why the spray booth through its permanent airflow obtains
two different results:
 On one hand it creates an air layer that avoids dust particles to
reach the treated Surface, and on the on the other hand it
neutralizes the VOC cloud and pulls it out through the pit
of the booth, avoiding a direct and prolonged exposure on
the worker. Normally higher rates of airflow (measured in m3
per hour), means a safer work environment because it translates
to more power to neutralize VOCs.

13.  The mentioned risk could also be applied on just mixing paint
and not only spraying. Hazardous fumes from chemical
reactions are pretty common when performing this job and it is
highly advisable to do it inside the spray booth or even better on
a dedicated Paint mixing room.
 Fire hazard is also reduced thanks to spray booths. It must be
know that most paints and solvents are highly flammable and as
a result the area where they are used is normally marked ad
dangerous for fire hazard.
 Even a spray booth won’t neutralize this hazard, but with a
correct maintenance it’s a total safe zone to work in. Just change
filters when saturated and keep the interior clean.

14. The potential emissions to atmosphere from spray painting
operations are:
 Evaporated solvents (as VOCs) from drying of coating
formulations, thinners and cleaners
 Odours, caused by odorous solvents and VOCs
 Toxic compounds, to the extent that solvents, thinners and

 Coating overspray or ‘carryover’, and

active carbon layers (optional) may reduce to acceptable levels
the emissions to the atmosphere.
 Equipos Lagos has also contributed to develop a PCR (product
category rule) that is is part of an Environmental Product
Declaration (EPD) which is a multi-criteria measurement
standard of the environmental performance developed by
