Seattle faces multiple health, social, and environmental problems connected to food such as 11% of adults running out of food in 2007 and obesity rates of 21% for adults and 54% for overweight adults in King County in 2008. Supporting public health and protecting the environment are essential to the viability and livability of Seattle and its economy. The current food system relies too heavily on chemical inputs, oil, and leads to simultaneous increases in obesity and hunger while externalizing environmental costs. The 2012 Farm Bill will significantly impact Seattle's ability to improve its local food system and achieve its goals of environmental sustainability, economic development, public health, and emergency preparedness.
