Why IT?
30 years ago, if computers disappeared few would have
noticed.
20 years ago you would need to take computers away
from the world for a week for a societal impact to be
seen.
10 years ago, a day’s outage would have caused mass
disruption.
Today, financial markets react when IT disruptions occur
for more than a few hours.
IT services are now a fundamental part of every business
and industry
Can you imagine what the world would be like today
without WhatsApp, Stream, Uber, Tumblr, AirBnB,
EFTPOS?

“If everything seems
under control, you’re
not going fast enough.”
Mario Andretti
• LIFELONG LEARNING : With the world moving as
fast as it is, we need to become a society of people
who are always learning new things
• ADAPTABILITY : You need to be resourceful, see
opportunities at every turn, like to experiment and
keep thinking ahead.
• BUSINESS ACUMEN : With opportunities in
innovation and entrepreneurship on the rise,
understanding how businesses work is essential.
• SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE : It’s going to take a long
time for AI and robots to be good at soft skills – so
making sure you refine your social and emotional
intelligence is a good start to remaining relevant.
Collaboration and cross-cultural competencies will
become highly valued.
• NEW MEDIA LITERACY : Understanding various
media platforms and how to best communicate
effectively in them—are valuable skills that AI and
robots also won’t be likely to match any time soon.
• DESIGN MINDSET : A way of thinking which
accounts for the design-characteristics- any aspect
which is used as a benefit or a drawback of the
technical component or technique in the overall
design.
• COMPUTATIONAL THINKING : As the total
amount of information coming at you increases and
increases, the ability to manage that in a way that
you’re not overwhelmed, is pretty key
What capabilities will you need in 2022?

IT SKILLS for the 2020’s
• Hardware specialists and electrical
engineers will still be needed – except they
will be playing with Internet of Things,
Wearables, next-generation drones and
robotics as well.
• Artificial Intelligence will play a bigger part
in the next decade, so along with all of these
other services, Integration experts and
Cyber Specialists will be tackling the need
to manage new technologies while the
blurring line between services and
technologies continues.
• Coding: The new “other language” people
will need to study. From old classics like
PERL to current standard Ruby on Rails and
new to the block Spark – all will all be heavily
utilised for Cloud, DevOps, and BigData.
• Data is the new basis of IT and currency.
The need to protect transactions (such as via
BlockChain), maintain a distributed massive
data collections with Hadoop and analyse
those same collections with a data-
processing tool such as Spark are all big
ticket items.
• As-a-Service / Cloud based IT - Amazon
Web Services and Azure aren’t the only
players – Specialists in SalesForce, Workday
and other platforms will be “standard IT”
