After reading the required readings and watching the video's, I have chosen Option B on: Women and the State.I have always been fascinated by different religions and traditions as well as why women wear hijabs or veils. ย Some of the reasons that women would wear the hijab are for self-censorship, feminism, their own identity, and preserving cultural traits. In the film โI wasnโt always dressed like thisโ one of them women observed how men would look and act towards women and her decision to wear the hijab and Niqab (full covering of the body with the exception of the hands and eyes), was one of self-reflection and the belief that a womanโs body was hers and not for a man to see, it was her decision to control what others could see of her, it was in itself a type of controlled feminism. It was a way for her to not only honor herself, her culture, her modesty, self-empowerment, but to honor God. โMany different understandings of the veil exist. To most, it is a symbol of identity or culture. Some have used it as a symbol of freedom, while others have used it as a symbol of suppression. Nonetheless, they all agree that it is symbolic of some sort of expression in societyโ (Galadari, 2012. p.116).
Since 9/11 media and society has linked the wearing of the hijab to terrorist and terrorist activity. instead of one of religion and self-reflection. Western societies are for the most part convinced that the hijab means that one is trying to hide their identity prior to committing atrocities. Media has played a big part in this belief and fear. Most people are so undereducated on the Muslim faith and the wearing of the hijab, veil, and niqab, that they believe the worst when seeing these in person. The most common stereotype is that of the veiled woman, a figure that ambivalently straddles both ideals of multicultural inclusivity and the threat of radicalization as context demands. One example of contemporary orientalism can be seen in media portrayals of Islam. โAfter 9/11, Muslims were stereotyped as threatening terrorists, but this stereotype was not new to 2001 but rather reborn. Media coverage of Iranโs Islamic Revolution had already planted this stereotype of the violent Muslim aggressor in modern Americaโ (OโConnor, 2013).
The hijab is known by all that the Muslim faith adheres to. The hijab is also worn by Jewish faiths as an important part of their faith and modesty. โWhat constitutes [a violation of] Jewish practice? If she goes out with her hair [uncovered]โ (Yosef, 2012). Jewish women today may also practice the use of a wig or covering of their own hair in solidarity for their sanctity of marriage and piety of their faith. ย In Mediterranean societies, the rich or upper socialites wore a type of veil to show that they were free and pure, whereas prostitutes and lower-class women were not permitted to wear a veil due to their impurity. Earlier this month, Denmark became the fifth country in Europe to introduce a ban on face coverings in
public places. The policy is widely viewed as being targeted at Muslim women who wear veils such as
the niqab.
Despite protests in the countryโs capital, police have started enforcing the law in earnest. On Aug. 3, a
28-year-old wearing the niqab, which covers the entire body except the eyes, was attacked by another
Danish woman who tried to pull her veil off, the Guardian reported. Police fined the Muslim woman
$156.
Legislation around full-face veils has grown increasingly common in Europe, particularly in the past
three years. Six countries have now passed nationwide laws that partially or fully ban face veils in public
places. The latest is the Netherlands, which voted in June to partially ban face veils in locations such as
schools and hospitals, but not on public streets.

Widespread calls for legislation outlawing face veils in public places started in France, which in 2011

Nicolas Sarkozy argued during a state-of-the-nation address that the burqa โ a head-to-toe covering
with mesh screening the eyes, mainly worn in Afghanistan โ was a โsign of subservience and
debasement.โ
"I want to say solemnly, the burqa is not welcome in France. In our country, we canโt accept women

Every few weeks or months, after a man armed with a high-powered weapon walks into a school or a church or a
nightclub and opens fire, the national response plays out in a rote, almost performative way. The outcry lasts only a few
days before guns fade back into the background noise of American politics.
But nearly three weeks after a gunman walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., and killed
17 people with an AR-15, the conversation has not faded, because the students of Stoneman Douglas have taken up the
cause of gun control. Already, they have lobbied state lawmakers in Tallahassee, spoken with President Trump and
persuaded many companies to cut ties with the National Rifle Association. And on Saturday, they met with students
fighting gun violence in Chicago.
Several of those students, and their critics, have noted the incongruity of teenagers getting involved in politics. But
history is full of movements led by students โ albeit usually in college, not high school. Some were successful and others
brutally crushed, but even the latter still resonate. (Most of these campaigns have been liberal-leaning: Though
conservative college students have made their presence known, their actions have rarely coalesced into broader
movements.)

In the late 1980s it has increasingly seemed that lesbians experience a
freedom and a pleasure in dress that is denied, if not to heterosexual
women in general, at least to heterosexual feminists. The dyke event of
the year in London in the winter of 1986/7 was a glamour ball, 'Come
Dancing' at which women once seen in boots, denim and leather
appeared in frocks, high heels, lipstick and decolletage - items they
would not have even thought of wearing in the seventies. Now,
everything's changed. Tickets were like gold dust.
The feminist debates of the eighties have placed representation at
the core of feminist concerns. These debates have included not only the
role of pornography, advertising and other branches of the popular
media in constructing women - or femininity - culturally, but have also
made us aware of the extent to which we create individual identities by
putting together our own self-representations. Clothes play a key part
in our acts of self-presentation, whether we like it - or recognize it - or
not.
In this article I want to do three things: relate the fashions of the
lesbian subculture to mainstream fashion; discuss their convergence in
the 1960s and since; and suggest ways in which specifically lesbian
styles may challenge what are still 'taken-for-granted' assumptions for
some feminists.

Conceptualization of Fashion as a Social Construct_Yanyi Li
This paper examines how Chinese cultural fashion diffuses globally using sociological theories of fashion as a social construct. It analyzes the Chinese fashion trend of Qipao through the lenses of trickle-down, trickle-up, and trickle-across diffusion models. While these models were developed based on Western cultures, they can also be applied to explain the spread of fashion trends in ancient Chinese history. The paper also discusses how Chinese fashion, such as the Qipao, has influenced global high fashion through its adoption by Western designers. After reading the required readings and watching the video's, I have chosen Option B on: Women and the State.I have always been fascinated by different religions and traditions as well as why women wear hijabs or veils. ย Some of the reasons that women would wear the hijab are for self-censorship, feminism, their own identity, and preserving cultural traits. In the film โI wasnโt always dressed like thisโ one of them women observed how men would look and act towards women and her decision to wear the hijab and Niqab (full covering of the body with the exception of the hands and eyes), was one of self-reflection and the belief that a womanโs body was hers and not for a man to see, it was her decision to control what others could see of her, it was in itself a type of controlled feminism. It was a way for her to not only honor herself, her culture, her modesty, self-empowerment, but to honor God. โMany different understandings of the veil exist. To most, it is a symbol of identity or culture. Some have used it as a symbol of freedom, while others have used it as a symbol of suppression. Nonetheless, they all agree that it is symbolic of some sort of expression in societyโ (Galadari, 2012. p.116).
Since 9/11 media and society has linked the wearing of the hijab to terrorist and terrorist activity. instead of one of religion and self-reflection. Western societies are for the most part convinced that the hijab means that one is trying to hide their identity prior to committing atrocities. Media has played a big part in this belief and fear. Most people are so undereducated on the Muslim faith and the wearing of the hijab, veil, and niqab, that they believe the worst when seeing these in person. The most common stereotype is that of the veiled woman, a figure that ambivalently straddles both ideals of multicultural inclusivity and the threat of radicalization as context demands. One example of contemporary orientalism can be seen in media portrayals of Islam. โAfter 9/11, Muslims were stereotyped as threatening terrorists, but this stereotype was not new to 2001 but rather reborn. Media coverage of Iranโs Islamic Revolution had already planted this stereotype of the violent Muslim aggressor in modern Americaโ (OโConnor, 2013).
The hijab is known by all that the Muslim faith adheres to. The hijab is also worn by Jewish faiths as an important part of their faith and modesty. โWhat constitutes [a violation of] Jewish practice? If she goes out with her hair [uncovered]โ (Yosef, 2012). Earlier this month, Denmark became the fifth country in Europe to introduce a ban on face coverings in
public places. The policy is widely viewed as being targeted at Muslim women who wear veils such as
the niqab.
Despite protests in the countryโs capital, police have started enforcing the law in earnest. On Aug. 3, a
28-year-old wearing the niqab, which covers the entire body except the eyes, was attacked by another
Danish woman who tried to pull her veil off, the Guardian reported. Police fined the Muslim woman
$156.
Legislation around full-face veils has grown increasingly common in Europe, particularly in the past
three years. Six countries have now passed nationwide laws that partially or fully ban face veils in public
places. The latest is the Netherlands, which voted in June to partially ban face veils in locations such as
schools and hospitals, but not on public streets.

Every few weeks or months, after a man armed with a high-powered weapon walks into a school or a church or a
nightclub and opens fire, the national response plays out in a rote, almost performative way. The outcry lasts only a few
days before guns fade back into the background noise of American politics.
But nearly three weeks after a gunman walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., and killed
17 people with an AR-15, the conversation has not faded, because the students of Stoneman Douglas have taken up the
cause of gun control. Already, they have lobbied state lawmakers in Tallahassee, spoken with President Trump and
persuaded many companies to cut ties with the National Rifle Association. And on Saturday, they met with students
fighting gun violence in Chicago.
Several of those students, and their critics, have noted the incongruity of teenagers getting involved in politics. But
history is full of movements led by students โ albeit usually in college, not high school. Some were successful and others
brutally crushed, but even the latter still resonate. (Most of these campaigns have been liberal-leaning: Though
conservative college students have made their presence known, their actions have rarely coalesced into broader
movements.)

In the late 1980s it has increasingly seemed that lesbians experience a
freedom and a pleasure in dress that is denied, if not to heterosexual
women in general, at least to heterosexual feminists. The dyke event of
the year in London in the winter of 1986/7 was a glamour ball, 'Come
Dancing' at which women once seen in boots, denim and leather
appeared in frocks, high heels, lipstick and decolletage - items they
would not have even thought of wearing in the seventies. Now,
everything's changed. Tickets were like gold dust.
The feminist debates of the eighties have placed representation at
the core of feminist concerns. These debates have included not only the
role of pornography, advertising and other branches of the popular
media in constructing women - or femininity - culturally, but have also
made us aware of the extent to which we create individual identities by
putting together our own self-representations. Clothes play a key part
in our acts of self-presentation, whether we like it - or recognize it - or
not.
In this article I want to do three things: relate the fashions of the
lesbian subculture to mainstream fashion; discuss their convergence in
the 1960s and since; and suggest ways in which specifically lesbian
styles may challenge what are still 'taken-for-granted' assumptions for
some feminists.

individuals of both sexes take a 'pride in their appearance'. The word

This paper examines how Chinese cultural fashion diffuses globally using sociological theories of fashion as a social construct. It analyzes the Chinese fashion trend of Qipao through the lenses of trickle-down, trickle-up, and trickle-across diffusion models. While these models were developed based on Western cultures, they can also be applied to explain the spread of fashion trends in ancient Chinese history.
