BIM Implementation Guide
Chapter 1: Introduction to BIM
What is BIM?
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is
As the construction industry is rapidly evolving, the need for syncing data between two or more common data environments (CDEs), and with other document management solutions, has become more important.
Autodesk Construction Cloud, a portfolio of software and services that combines advanced technology, a
builders network and predictive insights for construction teams, and SharePoint are two such platforms that allow for efficient data synchronization.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a collaborative process that involves creating and managing digital representations of physical and functional characteristics of buildings. BIM allows architects, engineers, and contractors to detect design issues earlier and collaborate more effectively throughout the entire building life cycle. Zeidler Partnership Architects uses BIM on projects to improve quality, reduce costs and risks, and enable better collaboration among project teams through integrated project delivery. BIM provides benefits at all stages including design, construction, and facilities management.
Whitepaper: How Autodesk Supports Open Data Exchange Standards Sander Lijbers
Building Information Modeling (BIM) uses 3D digital models to improve project collaboration between teams. Data exchange standards like Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) help share these models between software applications. Autodesk supports open standards like IFC and contributes to their development. It provides certification and tools to improve data exchange between its BIM applications like Revit and other software. Autodesk also supports other standards to facilitate project collaboration and handover of information.
AECOsim Building Designer is information modeling software that allows multi-discipline building teams to design, simulate, analyze, and document buildings in a single application. It provides tools for architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical design along with construction documentation. The software helps lower costs, save time, reduce risk and improve quality while providing higher returns for building owners.
BIM means a multitude of things to a myriad of stakeholders, companies, and geographical locations, based on multiple factors.
However, from a holistic viewpoint, the meaning we append to and the expectations we have of BIM are not as important as the connection that BIM brings when properly deployed with cloud-based solutions; thus, filling so many inefficiency gaps.
This is the era of Connected Construction and there has been an increased need for remote collaboration across every industry.
For whatever reason you implement Digital Transformation in your practice, you will most likely reap more benefits in the long run, if you can collaborate and connect with the other stakeholders across your projects.

Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.

2. • The cloud is the present and future of all things “Digital”. As the AEC industry is
fragmented, data exhaustive, and project positioned, AEC firms need to move the
cloud now. Designing, building, and renovating require modern processes like
BIM and cloud-based software to store crucial data like 2D drawings, 3D models,
RFI’s, BOQ’s, digitally signed documents, project simulation videos, etc.
• Storing and sharing project data to support coordination and collaboration
between various construction trades requires simple yet powerful, and efficient
cloud storage systems for individuals within the AEC industry to share data &
collaborate. Spinning-up processing models and developing data facilitates higher
project interoperability between project participants.
3. • The concept of Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a state-of-the-art design
process that helps designers & other project stakeholders visualize the complete
building project before it's built and the resources required to build the project. It
all begins with a state-of-the-art drawing tool and then evolves into processes
and programs.
• Various software works in collaboration with architects or designers wherein a
drawing stack becomes an interactive database. BIM uses parametric software
like Revit to build 3D BIM models based on the 2D drawings provided by the
client. With data in the cloud, the BIM system computes building properties and
offers improvements for energy calculations, team responsibilities, workflows,
time, and cost.
4. • Any changes in the model are reflected with revised cost estimates and modified
design. The cloud enables seamless collaboration for teams to work on complex
projects. Collaborative working is a key aspect of AEC workflows, and AEC firms
don’t expect collaborative teams to work inbound physical spaces.
5. FINDING THE RIGHT WAY TO COLLABORATE IS CRITICAL TO RUNNING AN
EFFECTIVE AEC ENTERPRISE.
• Collaboration is key to business success, finding the perfect way to communicate
and collaborate within teams and clients is a critical part of an effective business.
Being able to adopt remote work & share construction files like 2D drawings, 3D
models, etc. and using a 3D model viewer helps project stakeholders make quick
& informed decisions on the fly.
• With huge storage spaces and high bandwidth, AEC enterprises can upload and
store large project files, and share it with various project teams for review. With
tools like separated drives for different purposes, AEC individuals store and share
files based on various trades viz. Architecture, Structure, MEP, and FP.
6. • As remote personnel require on-the-go data, desk sync cloud storage helps
individuals sync their data from desktops, laptops, to other mobile devices.
Coordination and collaboration between the design and construction team
become easier with unlimited collaborators working on a single Common Data
Environment (CDE).
• Documents that require quick approvals through signatures can use digital
signatures to sign and share documents to move projects forward. The use of
enhanced search tools helps individuals and project teams find specific
construction assets from a plethora of files and folders.
7. • Individuals can also leverage the use of multiple file versions to store various file
versions incase teams need to access and collaborate on previous versions. With
all these cloud storage tools and features, construction companies can cash in on
cloud storage in real-time and share it with various project stakeholders in the
cloud itself.
8. • Conclusion
Cloud storage for AEC enterprises and individuals is one of the most powerful
technologies or platforms that can augment project collaboration & progress. The
ability to store and share data in a flexible and scalable environment helps
architects, engineers, contractors, owners & other stakeholders look for better
ways to do work with secure cloud storage.
