He could have been one of four or more priests in ancient times. Beheaded on a bridge outside of Rome? Killed on missionary work in Africa? Who was St. Valentine. How did his 'day' become so prominent?
2. Saint Valentine of Terni is the way his
name is officially recorded. However,
the name might represent three
different real men: a priest from Rome,
or perhaps the Bishop of Terni. Or,
even, although doubtful, a man who
was killed in northern Africa along with
several other Catholic missionaries.
3. Why he was killed?
The most popular theory being that he
continued to secretly marry Christians
in defiance of the Roman Emperor’s
decree forbidding it.

Scout’s Mission: Valentines Day
5. Chaucer said Valentines Day was when
‘every fowl comes forth to chose his
mate’.”
His writing helped popularize the date.
6. “There sat a queen who was more lovely by far than any
other creature, just as the summer sun outshines the
stars. This noble goddess Nature sat enthroned in a
pavilion she had wrought of branches upon a flowered
hill atop a meadow. And there was not any bird born of
love that was not ready in her presence to hear her and
receive her judgment. For this was Saint Valentine’s
Day, when all the birds of every kind that men can
imagine come to choose their mates.” Chaucer:

8. ‘St. Valentine is the Patron Saint of
affianced couples, bee keepers,
engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting,
greetings, happy marriages, love,
lovers, plague, travelers, and young
people. He is represented in pictures
with birds and roses and his feast day
is celebrated on February 14.”
