Youth Awareness Project (YAP) on Gender Based Violence (GBV) - by the Birendra &
Serika Siriwardhana Initiative (BSSI) Trust Fund
Gender Based Violence (GBV) affects individuals, families and communities
adversely. Recent evidence published by WHO shows that one in three women will be
subjected to some sort of gender based violence during their life time. Sri Lanka is not an
exception and it too faces the same problem in different forms.
WHO County Office in Sri Lanka is supportive of the Youth Awareness Project
(YAP) on Gender Based Violence (GBV)-YAP started by the Birendra & Serika
Siriwardhana Initiative (BSSI) Trust Fund to motivate youth to stop violence against women
and girls as a national campaign.
YAP is planning to use the platforms of sports, music, technology, debating, writing
and arls to partner with youth around the country by providing information, training resources
and support to youth initiatives. Initiated partnerships are expected to build a network of
young advocates, linking their efforts to those of community based and mainstream
trganizations, entertainment and sports communities, non-profit and corporations towards
addressing GBV in society.
YAP has selected youth education as the foundation of their campaign and promotes
peer to peer learning. This is a important initiative and one of the first of its kind in that it is
toth youth led and informed. YAP is expected to continue and expand both its resources and
presence during course ofthe next five years and beyond.
WHO Country office in Sri Lanka is happy to support YAP by providing technical
support in training, monitoring and evaluation and providing technical resources (reports,
toot-tits and training modules) for young leaders of YAP. We request different stakeholders
specially youth educational institutions in Sri Lanka to support this project to make a
difference on GBV in Sri Lanka.
