THE WEEKEND
By Georgina & Nephelie
THE QUESTION?
• Have You Ever Wondered...
• Who invented weekends?
• When did weekends begin?
• What fun things do you like to do on the weekend?
• The word weekend didn’t exist until the 19th century.
• Throughout history, people worked every day.
They only took a day off because of a holiday, like Christmas day!
When people
started
working in
factories
in the late 19th
century
(1800s),
they had to
work 10-16
hours a day,
seven days a
week!
In the end
Factory
workers
weren’t
happy!
Some factory
owners
agreed to
close
their factories
on Sundays
and workers
were given
the day off
to go to
church.
WHO INVENTED
WEEKEND?
Born on July 30 1863, near Dearborn,
Michigan, Henry Ford created the
Ford Model car in 1908 and went on to
develop the assembly line mode of
production, which revolutionized the
industry.
As a result, Ford sold millions of cars
and became world-famous.
• In 1926, Henry Ford
decided to close his
business, the Ford
Car Company , for
two days a weekend.
This wasn’t only
because he was a
kind man. He gave
his workers free time
at the weekend to go
on trips. Then they
bought his cars so
that they could get
around.
