This document summarizes the determinants and phases of wheelchair propulsion. It discusses the five steps of the push phase: 1) applying a grip, 2) stabilizing the base of support, 3) transferring force from the upper extremity to the pushrim. It also describes the recovery phase of releasing the grip and returning the arm to its starting position. Graphs and tables provide data on forces, angles, muscles involved, and propulsion efficiency. Guidelines for proper wheelchair fit and propulsion style are also presented.
