Summary -nonprofit_leadership_in_the_rural_south_research
This study examined nonprofit leadership, executive transitions, and next generation leadership in rural areas of the southeastern United States through an online survey of 267 nonprofit organizations. Key findings include:
1) Around two-thirds of executive directors plan to leave their positions within five years, but most want to stay in the nonprofit sector. However, few organizations have succession plans.
2) Executive directors reported feeling overworked and under supported, with heavy workloads, inadequate salaries, and lack of support from boards, staff, and funders.
3) On average, executive director salaries were lower than national averages, and many felt they had made financial sacrifices. Women leaders earned less than men and felt greater sacrifices.

The Building Change Trust is a 10 year £10 million charitable fund established by the Big Lottery Fund to support change and transformation in the Northern Ireland Community and Voluntary sector. Its vision is for a strong, vibrant, independent and relevant community and voluntary sector in Northern Ireland. The Trust is actively considering its role in supporting impact measurement to help organizations focus on impact, understand achievements, and identify what works to make best use of limited resources.

The Appalachia Funders Network is a group of public and private grant-makers who envision an entrepreneurial-based economy in Appalachia that provides opportunity for all while sustaining environmental and cultural assets. Over 45 grant-makers from 35 organizations developed a road map to: deepen connections between members; develop a shared analysis of economic opportunities in Appalachia; and collaborate across sectors to leverage more investments in entrepreneurship in Central Appalachia. The road map establishes goals, actions and indicators over the next 12 months to achieve this vision.
Making Homes for Arts in Sacred Places
This document summarizes a study examining potential partnerships between visual and performing arts organizations and sacred places in Philadelphia. It assessed the physical/technical, organizational, and receptivity capacities of both arts groups and sacred places. Key findings included substantial underused space in sacred places and a lack of technical resources for arts use. Both sectors had limited staff/funds for partnerships. Leaders were open to collaborating primarily to develop new audiences/supporters, not for financial reasons. The study recommends Partners for Sacred Places create programs like a training program and database, shared management solutions, rental subsidies, and capital grants to address gaps and foster partnerships by investing in shared knowledge/staffing and physical/technical resources.

Strategic partnership boards in local government aim to enable collaborative working to address public issues. However, these boards may be more bureaucratic than collaborative.
Two case studies of strategic boards in the UK - Health and Wellbeing Boards and Local Strategic Partnerships - demonstrate some common issues. These boards often lack clear purpose, have duplicative membership, and do not engage partners strategically.
Effective collaboration requires a shared vision and mutual reinforcement between partners. It also needs strong leadership, community engagement, and backbone support to coordinate efforts. Statutory boards can find it difficult to balance formal processes with collaborative ways of working.
