The Complexity of Data: Computer Simulation and “Everyday” Social ScienceEdmund Chattoe-Brown
Although the existence of various forms of complexity in social systems is now widely recognised, this approach to explanation faces two major challenges that turn out to be intimately connected. The first is the existing conflict in social science between “micro” and “macro” styles of social explanation. The second is the relationship of complexity to the kind of data routinely collected in social science. In order to be accepted, complexity approaches need simultaneously to dodge the first conflict while making much better use of existing forms of data.
The first part of the talk will provide an introduction to the simulation approach and a discussion of various concepts in complexity with reference to simulation as a distinctive theory-building tool and methodology. The second part of the talk will develop these ideas in more depth using simulations by the author as case studies.

Current challenges for educational technology research
Mayes described educational technology research as being like the film, 'Groundhog Day', with "cycles of high expectation [...] followed by proportionate disappointment", and "a cyclical failure to learn from the past". Fifteen years on, this experience still rings true.
Is this pattern inevitable and inescapable? This paper identified several challenges faced by work in this area. Together, they go some way towards explaining this pattern, and identifying what will need to change if we are to break out of this.
These challenges include the strategic difficulty of maintaining research work across cycles of new technology; the methodological challenge of studying things people have forgotten they are using; the epistemological challenge of reconceptualising the relationship between technology, users and effects; the practical challenge of knowing our learners; and the political challenge of securing funding for anything other than instrumental, applied work.

perspective
Strengths Challenges
First Can orient strongly toward meeting one’s own concrete
needs and impulses. Can takes initiative in an
emergency.
Has difficulty seeing “the big picture”; Applies force or
seeks personal advantage when cooperative efforts are
more appropriate. Little focus on future or past.
Second Supports group cohesion and solidarity; Good with
structure, rules, and order. Good short term service to
others as long as it fits within role.
Can fall into ‘us-vs-them’ and ‘black and white’ thinking.
Avoids conflict and stepping outside of norms. Has difficulty
hearing feedback.
Third Rational, abstract thinking and planning. Creative
solution and achievement oriented. 1 - 5 year time
horizon. Accepts some feedback and adjusts behavior
towards defined goals.
Tends to over-focus on narrow solutions for team or
organization, without seeing environmental impacts or
deeper needs. Over emphasizes imagined goals, without
considering inevitable changes in context and knowledge,
and thus had difficulty adapting quickly.
Fourth Reciprocity, deep collaboration, concerns for the
multiple contexts, perspectives, constituencies; able
to reflect on sources of biases and uncertainties. 15 - 20
year time horizon. Sees limits of objective understanding
and anticipates need for adaptation and agility. Seeks
broad feedback.
May overemphasize systemic complexity when simpler
or more direct solutions are needed. Tends to over-focus
on collective, bottom-up, or systemic issues, rather than
individual accountability, limitations, and action. Can be
dogmatic and or arrogant and under-appreciate that others
may not share their big-picture view.
Fifth Emergent solutions; tolerance for ambiguity and
chaos; flow within complexity. In-the-moment reflection
on one’s own biases and vulnerabilities. Ability to work
outside of assumptions and boundaries.
Generational/global timeframe. Maps connections
across fields and domains. See everything as
opportunity for feedback and adaptation.
Readiness to challenge any construct or assumption may
be disturbing and confusing for others (and for the self!).
Can be prone to excessive cognitive complexity, or seem
too abstract or obtuse. May be challenged by structures or
actions they judged as “egoic” or short-sighted. Thinking
can be seen as too idiosyncratic or abstract, where
others may have difficulty seeing the relevance of their
contributions.
