2. Once upon a time, some clever researchers had an idea.
They knew all about learning styles, and they knew how to measure
learning ability. They knew which demographics achieved certain
results, and which didn’t. They knew that some teachers had better
results than others, and sometimes they even knew why.
But they wanted to go further.
They wanted to identify the raw ‘building blocks’ of learning; not
abilities, not styles, but the actual components of learning itself. The
raw energy of learning. And they called this energy Learning Power.
So what is Learning Power?
3. Learning Power may be thought of as the raw potential of learning.
It is an energy that everyone has, and that everyone can develop.
Through a systematic programme of research over many years, and with the
co-operation of thousands of research participants, the researchers turned
Learning Power inside-out and upside-down and back-to-front until finally it
was broken down into seven identifiable elements.
These elements became known as The Seven Dimensions of Learning.
These same researchers developed a vast set of learning criteria, each
connected to one of the Seven Dimensions.These criteria ultimately became
known as the Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory, or ELLI.
And that’s how the story of ELLI began.
