Engineering Design in Industry Final Presentation Slide ShowDarren Zack
This presentation was the result of 5 students working as a team to develop an efficient integrated aquaponics system (hydroponics and aquaculture) for use in the Great Park in Irvine. We presented this to the representatives of our industry sponsors: Thomas Grimm of Makers Depot and Tom Larson of the Orange County Great Park.
In this project the student team evaluated the viability, efficiency, and design requirements of an aquaponic system to determine its sustainability as a business model for food production. This presentation is a summary of the results.
The integration of fish and vegetables creates an ideal growing environment that is more productive than conventional methods. Consequently, aquaponics is gaining more importance now a day because crop production systems are being forced towards increasing irregularities as drought, floods, storms, cyclones and diseases visit regularly. A simple aquaponic system was designed with the locally available materials.13 pants of 5 different species were grown in an area of 0.27 m2 ( Rashmi M et. al 2013). Three different methods were tested to determine the best system to grow Taro vegetable. The applied methods were T1 = aquaponics system for soilless vegetable culture in gravel bed with fish tank waste water, T2= hydroponics for soilless vegetable culture in gravel bed with tap water and T3= vegetable culture in soil media with tap water as control. Double recirculating aquaponic system (DRAPS) consisting of two independent recirculating units – a recirculating aquaculture unit for fish production and a closed hydroponic cycle for plant production which were connected unidirectional was developed (Suhl J et al 2016). Results revealed that aquaponic system offers better results than other media. This system can enhance the organic farming which could be environmental friendly. Double recirculating aquaponic system (DRAPS) with two independent cycles provides the opportunity to produce equal tomato yields compared to those obtained by conventionally used hydroponic systems. By Using DRAPS fertilizer use efficiency was also improved by 23.6%.

Imagine a Garden Where There's No More Weeds or Soil Pests, No Tilling or Cultivating, No Fertilizer Spreading or Compost Shredding, No Manure Spreading or Irrigating, and No Tractor Shed Required...
And Yet... Your Plants Grow Abundantly, Taste Amazing, and Are Extremely Healthy.
Here's How It Works: AQUAPONICS !
The process is revolutionary because with it your plants grow 100% to 50% faster, and you can grow up to
TEN times the plants in the same amount of space.
How does it work?
Basically, it turns normal gardening on organic super-drive as it feeds rich ALIVE natural nutrients to your plants 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

At the moment, an attempt has been made to adapt, adapt and automate the Aquaponics System technology for the benefit of farmers and to tackle key issues such as food safety and water scarcity. Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture, which is growing fish and other aquatic animals, and hydroponics which is growing plants without soil. Aquaponics uses these two in a symbiotic combination in which plants are fed the aquatic animal's discharge or waste. In return, the vegetables clean the water that goes back to the fish. Along with the fish and their waste, microbes play an important role to the nutrition of the plants. These beneficial bacteria gather in the spaces between the roots of the plant and converts the fish waste and the solids into substances the plants can use to grow. Aquaponics considered a sustainable production system. It presents a series of beneficial features for the environment such as land conservation, efficient use of water and nutrients, organic fertilization, produce the highest yield on a field, no floor is required, environmental benefits etc. This study describes the overall design and working, list of the component required, cost involved in the setup, maintenance, and operation, advantages and disadvantages of the system. A automatic prototype has also proposed to created a to test the system sustainability. Slide 1: Victoria Tycholis
Aquaponics is an agricultural system which combines aquaculture and hydroponics in a symbiotic relationship. The result of this integration is edible fish and fresh produce from a single operation (Palm).
Aquaponics relies on two core ecological relationships. One is between the fish and plants raised. Fish raised in tanks make excretions that enter the system’s re-circulated water. The so-called “waste water” from the fish tank delivers bio-available nutrients directly to the bare roots of the crop plants; this circumvents the soil-root contact normally required to deliver nutrient-laden water. By the absorbing action of crop roots, the plants provide a filtering service to the fish. This allows for clean, habitable water for the fish to continue developing and breeding in.
The second ecological relationship is between bacteria and plants, which enables the first relationship. Bacteria “fix” the nitrogen that plants need by nitrification. The bacteria take the ammonia from fish excrement and convert it into nitrite then nitrate. Two groups of bacteria are required to make the nitrogen in fish excrement available. Nitrosomonas convert the ammonia into nitrite. Nitrobacter then convert the nitrite into nitrate (Nelson). For the farmer, these relationships mean that fertilizer is essentially being produced on-property. The enclosed nature of the entire system means that the farmer doesn’t have to worry about polluting the environment with fertilizer run-off.
The key components of an aquaponics system are as follows: The first component is one or more large fish tanks; the fish that are raised must be able to grow quickly and unencumbered by high population densities, such as tilapia. The second component is buoyant growing beds filled with growing medium such as ...

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

Aquaponic is a combination of the aquarium and hydroponic systems. It is a symbiotic
2. system life cycle of aquatic plants and interdependent with each other to produce fresh
agro-products and high quality.
In natural conditions, waste excretion of farmed aquatic life in the tank / aquarium will
cause the water to be toxic to aquatic life, but this toxicity, the opposite will turn into a
high nutritional contribution of nutrients and nourishment for plants grown hydroponically.
Aquaponic system will convey water from the tank's aquatic life that are toxic to plants
and it will absorb and get full nutrients derived from aquatic excretion above. After that,
naturally, the plant will supply clean and free of water toxic to the aquatic life.
Aquatic life that live in fresh water are very suitable to be applied to the system
Aquaponic as most plants need water to live. Wildlife saltwater can also be used, but the
crop to be used must also be in accordance with the above salt water.
This system will ensure that the natural cycle will continue without interruption. Water
only needs to be added once only to compensate for lack of water due to absorption by
the plants, evaporation naturally by air and also when the last fish tank cleaned.
FUNCTION
Akuaponik consist of two (2) main sections:
1. Aquaculture Division: Used for breeding aquatic life
2. Hydroponic Parts: Used to grow food
The most important equipment in the application Aquaponic system is pumping water.
Without the water pump, this system will not work properly because the water pump
could be regarded as the 'heart' of the system. This water pump that will bring
wastewater reservoir aquatic life that are toxic to the plant to be absorbed as a source of
nutrients for crop growth.
HISTORY
As with other systems, Aquaponic system also has its own history, although there is
3. some debate about the beginning of its existence.
In ancient history, say, ethnic Aztec (a tribe that dominates the whole great Mexico
Mesoamerica, who lived around the 14th century to 16) who started this Aquaponic
system use in their daily lives.
In Asia, South China and Thailand is said to have long practiced this method in paddy
Aquaponic where there is a combination of aquatic life such as catfish, eel, puyu and
many more species of freshwater fish.
In Western countries, scientists at New Alchemy Institute (Cape Cod, 1969-1991) began
experimental procedures on how to convert fish waste to manure excretion that can be
used as a source of plant growth.
The USA, Canada, Barbados (South America) and Australia is beginning to popularize
this Aquaponic system found in large scale and small scale. They began to diversify
aquatic life and plants are also suitable to be implemented into the system.
