What is Applied Linguistics ?
1-1 Introduction
 The term Applied Linguistics (AL)
is an Anglo-American coinage.
 It was founded first at the
University of Edinburgh School of
Applied Linguistics in 1956.
 Then at the Center of Applied
Linguistics in Washington ,D.C. in
1957
 AL use was promulgated by
those who clearly wanted to
be known as scientists and
not as humanists.
 AL in the past based itself
solely on the findings of
theoretical linguistics .
The position then was ,
essentially , that in order to be
able to teach a language , one
needed to know how the
language question was
structured (e.g. grammar and
translation and audio-lingual
methods of language
teaching were very common).
•It was especially linguists who had
contributed so greatly to the
language courses within foreign
language teaching.
Contrary to this assumption , a large number of
authors of the last few decades have expressed their
conviction that there was more than one discipline as
the basis of foreign language teaching or learning.
 In addition to linguistics and its sub-disciplines , one
often finds psychology, sociology, pedagogy and
education.
General Definition of Applied Linguistics
•AL is a field , the purpose of which is to
investigate problems related to language and
to put some practical steps to solve these
problems.
•From this definition we can derive the
following purposes of Applied Linguistics
(i) To investigate problems related to
language .
(ii) To take some practical steps to
solve these problems.
AL originated in language education –
first – language , second –language
and foreign language teaching and
learning - but it is now an integral
part of various specialized fields such
as speech therapy , lexicography and
dictionary making , translation and
interpretation , etc.
1-2 Definitions of the Term

3- Richards et al. 1985
4- Strevens 1992
5- Wilkins 1999
The main concern of AL is the teaching
and learning of foreign languages, and
sometimes the term , AL , is used as if
this were the only field involved
AL covers two main points:
(i) The study of second and
foreign language learning
and teaching.
(ii) The study of language
and linguistics in relation to
practical problems , such as
lexicography , translation,
speech pathology , etc
In order to develop its own theoretical
models of language use , AL takes
information from psychology,
sociology , anthropology , and
information theory as well as from
linguistics. It then uses this
information and theory in practical
areas such as syllabus design, speech
therapy , language planning, stylistics
, educational linguistics , etc.
Wilkins (1999) , however, shows the purposes of
AL in the following definition:
'' In abroad sense , applied linguistics
is concerned with increasing
understanding of the role of language
in human affairs and thereby with
providing the knowledge necessary
for those who are responsible for
taking language –related decision
whether the need for these arises in
the classroom, the workplace, the law
court, or the laboratory
From these definitions of the term AL
, one can sum up that it covers, in
addition to language teaching and
language learning several areas of
language studies ranging from
language disorders , language therapy
,lexicography, translation
,professional uses of language , etc.

  • 7. The position then was , essentially , that in order to be able to teach a language , one needed to know how the language question was structured (e.g. grammar and translation and audio-lingual methods of language teaching were very common).
  • 8. •It was especially linguists who had contributed so greatly to the language courses within foreign language teaching.
  • 9. Contrary to this assumption , a large number of authors of the last few decades have expressed their conviction that there was more than one discipline as the basis of foreign language teaching or learning.  In addition to linguistics and its sub-disciplines , one often finds psychology, sociology, pedagogy and education.
  • 10. General Definition of Applied Linguistics •AL is a field , the purpose of which is to investigate problems related to language and to put some practical steps to solve these problems.
  • 11. •From this definition we can derive the following purposes of Applied Linguistics (i) To investigate problems related to language . (ii) To take some practical steps to solve these problems.
  • 12. AL originated in language education – first – language , second –language and foreign language teaching and learning - but it is now an integral part of various specialized fields such as speech therapy , lexicography and dictionary making , translation and interpretation , etc.

  • 17. The main concern of AL is the teaching and learning of foreign languages, and sometimes the term , AL , is used as if this were the only field involved
  • 18. AL covers two main points: (i) The study of second and foreign language learning and teaching. (ii) The study of language and linguistics in relation to practical problems , such as lexicography , translation, speech pathology , etc
  • 19. In order to develop its own theoretical models of language use , AL takes information from psychology, sociology , anthropology , and information theory as well as from linguistics. It then uses this information and theory in practical areas such as syllabus design, speech therapy , language planning, stylistics , educational linguistics , etc.

Wilkins (1999) , however, shows the purposes of AL in the following definition: '' In abroad sense , applied linguistics is concerned with increasing understanding of the role of language in human affairs and thereby with providing the knowledge necessary for those who are responsible for taking language –related decision whether the need for these arises in the classroom, the workplace, the law court, or the laboratory
  • 22. From these definitions of the term AL , one can sum up that it covers, in addition to language teaching and language learning several areas of language studies ranging from language disorders , language therapy ,lexicography, translation ,professional uses of language , etc.
