What are the 6 Major Disciplines of Civil Engineering?
Civil engineering is the study of designing, constructing, and maintaining
infrastructure. It is a diverse field that can be divided into six major disciplines:
transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering,
water resources engineering, environmental engineering, and coastal
engineering.
Each of these disciplines requires a different set of skills and knowledge. For
example, transportation engineers focus on the planning, design, and
operation of transportation systems.

Civil engineering is one of the oldest and most prestigious professions. It is the application of science and
technology to the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of infrastructure projects and
systems. This includes everything from bridges and dams to water supply and sewerage systems, roads

Civil engineers contractors are responsible for some of the most iconic structures in the world. They
plan, design, construct and oversee the maintenance of these vital pieces of infrastructure. Without civil
engineers, our cities would not function. We rely on them to keep us safe, connected and moving.
Structural engineering is a field of civil engineering that deals with the analysis and design of structures,
such as buildings, bridges, dams, and tunnels. Structural engineers are responsible for making sure that
these structures are safe and stable.
Structural engineering is a challenging field that requires a strong understanding of mathematics and
physics. Structural engineers must be able to think creatively to solve complex problems.
The field of structural engineering is constantly evolving as new technologies are developed. Structural
engineers must keep up with the latest advancements in order to provide the best possible designs for
their clients.
Construction engineering is the application of engineering principles and technologies to the
planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of structures, machines and systems.
Construction engineers are responsible for the development and management of construction
projects. They work with architects, planners, surveyors and other professionals to ensure that
projects are completed on time, within budget and to the required standard.
Construction engineers often specialize in a particular type of project, such as bridges, roads or
buildings. They may also specialize in a particular type of construction, such as residential or
commercial.
