Socialization is defined as the process by which people develop a self-identity and learn to function in society. It enables humans to develop their potential and learn the behaviors necessary for social living. There are various theories that describe how personality and the social self develop through socialization. Freud proposed that personality consists of the id, ego and superego and develops through stages from birth to puberty. Cooley described the looking-glass self and how children learn to see themselves through the eyes of others. Mead expanded on this by relating how the self-concept is shaped by the social roles one takes on. Socialization is a lifelong process through which individuals learn roles to shape their personality and prepare to function effectively in their culture and society
