Sociology Update on new topics for 2015: Subject content and Teaching Ideas by Patrick Robinson, Teacher at Cadbury College, Birmingham. A presentation at the BSA Teaching Group Regional Conference on 28 February 2015
In the opening event of this year’s Festival of Democracy, SDN is excited to host a public lecture by co-founder and editor of The Conversation, Andrew Jaspan. Launched at a time of major upheavals within mainstream media, The Conversation is a unique initiative: a world’s first attempt to create a new type of web-based collaboration between academics and journalists, a not-for-profit commitment to publish materials with ‘academic rigour, journalistic flair’. Andrew Jaspan will share his thoughts about the emerging role of The Conversation, the 21st-century challenges it faces and the long-term public importance of open access information.
Digital Bootcamp returned once more to where it all began, the Frontline Club, Paddington, London - which champions independent journalism - on Friday 11 January 2013, as part of the London Short Film Festival's 10th anniversary edition. It was epic, a Deluxe version which saw a three hour lecture, one hour masterclass of five projects and an hour of networking.
What is ‘research impact’ in an interconnected world?Danny Kingsley
This talk looks at what researchers need to do to ensure their research is widely disseminated and reaches the largest audience possible. In summary: Publishing a paper is the beginning not the end; Making work open access does not mean it is accessible; Writing in plain language is translating, not dumbing it down; Sharing work involves peer networks and publishing platforms and If you don't take control of your online presence someone/something else will. The presentation was originally given as part of the Cambridge University Alumni Festival on 27 September 2015.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
role of women and girls in various terror groupssadiakorobi2
Women have three distinct types of involvement: direct involvement in terrorist acts; enabling of others to commit such acts; and facilitating the disengagement of others from violent or extremist groups.
4. Words that scare people
• “Innovation”
• “Experiment”
• “Think outside the box”
• Most people can’t – and don’t want – to do
that to order.
• People who love the idea are rare.
5. Why?
• “No institution wants to dissolve itself. Getting
that old mindset to accept that everything that it
has done as a business and editorial model is now
over, pffft, gone is very hard.” Andrew Sullivan, The Dish, 2012
• Fear
• Habit
• The peculiar conditions of journalism is the
second half of the 20th century
• Media businesses became operations companies
6. Conquering fear of flying
• Look back at history
• Focus on experiment
• Worry about quality of
experiment
• Drive up quantity of experiment
7. Journalism is always being disrupted
• When did more papers die in New York City
than any other time?
• British “national” papers – when was their
circulation peak?
• Tension between what people want to know
and what they should know always unstable
• Even universities get it: “teaching hospital”
projects and EJ courses.
8. Quantity
•
•
•
•
•
•
Imagine a media “launch” process
Now imagine an array of experiments
Split the money into 10
Do enough to make lots of mistakes
“Error is useful” (Buzzfeed)
Long, repeated cycles of change (so keep
doing it)
10. For instance…paywalls
• Dogma has no place in experiment: ideas are
stress-tested:
– “Information wants to be free”
– “People ought to pay for our news”
• Set up as many experiments as possible
• What did Andrew Miller say here on Monday?
• = there is no single answer
