1. Weekly Film: Suicide Squad
This week I finally managed to sit down and watch Suicide Squad. I was
saving it until me and my fellow comic book nerd friends were free to go see
it together but I got tired of waiting so I just kinda pirated it (don’t snake
me out). Anyway moving onto the first aspect of the film, the performance.
The performance was pretty solid from every character. The characters
were pretty faithful to their comic book counterpart, props to the writers,

2. and every actor played their role well. The only actor I did not like the
performance of was Jared Leto as the Joker. It was forced and the feeling of
insanity and craziness wasn’t there. It was painfully obvious that it was
somebody TRYING to be crazy. But considering that he didn’t have much
screen time and really wasn’t a huge character, it’s not enough to criticize
the entire movie over. That said, no performances absolutely blew me away
or had me really entranced so for this it gets a 6/10.
The cinematography wasn’t particularly great. There weren’t any beautiful
shots that created lots of meaning and effect from what I saw. Even the
character who was considered to have the most power and authority
(Amanda Waller) seemed to have no shots that looked up at her. She was
looked down upon most of the time because of the actor’s small height
because it was easier when she was talking to other characters. The
directors managed to use wide shots effectively during action sequences
though. For the lack of creativity with shots and angles but other than that
nothing was out of line. 5/10
The mise-en-scene was overall very good, especially the costumes. Every
character’s costume reflected their personality well. Amanda Waller had
her professional attire, Deadshot had military style gear, Harley Quinn was
casually wild attire that she went into battle with, I could go on. Everything
on screen seemed to serve a purpose, establishing something or other. For
example the first scene in the prison, it was made nearly immediately
obvious that it was a prison, from the dull colours, concrete walls and iron
bars. This was perhaps the best feature of the film. Nothing took away from
the main purpose of the scene. 8/10
The sound was also very good. The battles sounded real, the gunfire, the
blows, and the chaos. I even found myself flinching at one point because of
an impact. The sound track was also terrific. While that’s down to personal
opinion, I love the music and even the original music created the effect it
needed to. The sound effects were well placed, well timed and well done.
At no point did I find the music out of place or any effects sounding
unnatural. Although there were some points in the film where the music
took away from the scene. Maybe it’s just because I already knew some of
the songs and enjoyed them but at one point I found myself not paying
attention to what was happening because I was busy listening to the music.
For this I’ll give the sound a 7/10.
Finally the lighting. I’ll get right to it and say that at some points, I found
the scenes much too dark. In the action sequence where I flinched due to
the sound of an impact, it may have been because I was focusing on the
sound to try and tell what was going on. Just look at the shot below. It’s so
difficult to tell what’s happening. Just look at this show below. It’s so hard
to tell what’s happening. Although the use of light to create meaning was
not completely left out. For example as I mentioned earlier the dull colours
and dim lighting during the first prison scene and the brightness of the
scene with Deadshot and his child. I also noticed that when Deadshot was
with his child, his face seemed to be more often brightly lit compared to his

3. other scenes in the film. Taking all this into account, I give the lighting a
6/10.
