The domestic dog is a subspecies of the gray wolf that was first domesticated and has since been selectively bred for behaviors and physical traits. While modern wolves are not closely related to the wolves first domesticated, dogs share ancestry with wolves and are the most widely abundant terrestrial carnivore. There are many breeds of dogs around the world, though an exact number is hard to determine as varieties are not always recognized as separate breeds by kennel clubs.
