What is Ideate?
FADHILAH RAIHAN | AUGUST 2020
Developing solutions using creativity and innovation
Goal of Ideation: To generate a large number of ideas — ideas that potentially inspire newer, better
ideas — that the team can then cut down into the best, most practical and innovative ones
Design team can look beyond the usual methods of solving problems in order to find better, more
elegant, and satisfying solutions to problems that affect a user's experience of a product.

Will Help
You to:

Ask the right
questions and
innovate.
Step beyond the
obvious solutions
and therefore
increase the
innovation
potential of your
solution.
Bring together
perspectives and
strengths of team
members.
Uncover
unexpected areas
of innovation.
Create volume and
variety in your
innovation options.
Get obvious
solutions out of
your heads and
drive your team
beyond them.
Methods of
Ideation

Brainstorm Sketch Mindmap
Analogies Provocation Prototyping
Worst Possible
Idea
FADHILAH RAIHAN | AUGUST 2020
• Focus on quantity
• Encourage wild ideas
• No criticism
Brainstorming
• Give general outline of design
• Give visual look to the design
• Able to focus on details later
Sketching
• Fun technique!
• Purposefully seek the worst solutions in ideation
sessions
• Challenge their assumptions
• Absurd and non-sensical ideas
Worst Possible
Ideas
Two Phases of Ideation:
FADHILAH RAIHAN | AUGUST 2020
Idea Generation Concept Development
Phase 1:
Idea
Generation
• Generate as many ideas as possible, go for quantity
over quality at this phase, keep the idea flow
• Stimulate the creativity of members, be visual and
show through drawing & sketches
• Mix individuals to collaborate effectively & creatively
• All members must share ideas to avoid free-riding
effect
• Do not criticize others, build on their ideas
• Keep creativity session short and at an intense pace
• Assigned moderator (can be the group leader) to
monitor the ideation session
FADHILAH RAIHAN | AUGUST 2020
Phase 2:
Concept
Development
Clustering, Combining, Selecting & Further
Developing the Selected Ones
• During brainstorming session teams would have
generated at least 50 ideas/sketches
• Next is to cluster those ideas and find themes
that emerged
• Display all ideas and see if you can find novel
combinations
FADHILAH RAIHAN | AUGUST 2020
Convergent
Thinking
Arriving at conclusions by making connections, or
synthesizing data, ideas, and insights
• Cluster related ideas
• Mix and match ideas to create better ones
• Narrow the set by listing the constraints
• Archive ideas which are difficult to create, you might
want to revisit later
