Making connections

Session description: Maker culture, maker spaces, and content creation are new movements in libraries -- or are they? People have always created, with the help of library resources. The maker movement in libraries goes much further than resources by providing space, tools, mentors, more resources, and even programming to help people make and create even more! Public libraries have been the main focus of maker spaces, but school and academic libraries can also participate! This session will provide a brief primer on the maker movement and its culture, showcase how libraries are developing maker programming and spaces in their libraries, explain why libraries should embrace this movement, and how you can do it -- with plenty of resources to help!Recommended

This document summarizes a SAS macro called %PROC_R that enables native R programming in the base SAS environment. %PROC_R executes user-defined R code in batch mode by calling the unnamed pipe method within SAS. It automatically converts data between SAS datasets and R data frames so results from each environment can be used in the other. The macro allows R output, including text and graphics, to be displayed in the SAS interface. Several examples demonstrate how to perform statistical analysis and data manipulation using both SAS and R code integrated together with this macro.

This document summarizes topic models, which are probabilistic models used to uncover the underlying semantic structure of document collections. It introduces latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), the simplest topic model, which models documents as mixtures of topics, where each topic is a distribution over words. LDA assumes documents exhibit multiple topics in different proportions. It describes the graphical model representation of LDA and the probabilistic generative process that is assumed to have produced the observed document-word data. Figures from applying LDA to a collection of Science articles are shown to illustrate the automatically discovered topics.

sexy maps comes to R - ggplot+ google maps= ggmap #rstats
ggmap is an R package that enables the visualization of spatial data superimposed on static maps from sources like Google Maps and OpenStreetMap. It combines these map images with the layered grammar of graphics implementation in ggplot2. This allows spatial data and models to be easily plotted on top of map backgrounds for contextualization. Key features include downloading maps via the get_map function and then plotting with ggmap using the consistent scales and conventions of ggplot2. The package facilitates the interpretation of spatial analyses and questions by non-experts through these informative visualizations.

CTM uses a logistic normal distribution over topic proportions instead of a Dirichlet, allowing for covariance structure between topics. This provides a more realistic model of latent topic structure where presence of one topic may be correlated with another. Variational inference is used to approximate posterior inference in CTM. The model is shown to provide a better fit than LDA on a corpus of journal articles.

Revis L. Edmonds Jr. is a historian and educator with extensive experience teaching and conducting research in Arkansas history. He has a MA in History from the University of Central Arkansas and is ABD in a PhD program in Heritage Studies at Arkansas State University. His research focuses on Arkansas politics and culture in the late 20th century. He has published articles and book chapters, presented at numerous conferences, and received awards for his work from the Arkansas Historical Association. Currently he works as a graduate research assistant at Arkansas State University.

Libraries and archives
Libraries and archives contain secondary sources that should be verified using primary sources when possible. Public, university, genealogical society, and state libraries all contain genealogical resources. The Family History Library has the largest collection of genealogical records from around the world, accessible online and through local Family History Centers. Researchers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with library policies and resources to efficiently conduct research.

Storyboarding for Better Design
Storyboarding is a technique used in user experience design and design thinking to plan and communicate the flow of an interactive product or experience. It involves creating simple sketches or scenes to map out how a user will interact with a design. International design firm IDEO specializes in various design fields including user experience design, and has worked with major companies on projects applying design thinking. IDEO has also created toolkits and training materials for libraries to help them adopt design thinking approaches.
Your ILS
This document provides an overview of tips, tricks, and best practices for using the Koha integrated library system (ILS). It discusses searching for patrons and items on both the staff and public sides of Koha. On the staff side, it covers editing patron and item records. For the public side (OPAC), it recommends using the OPAC as much as possible and teaching its features to patrons. In early 2017, St Louis Public Library was hit with Ransomware a type of malware that can encrypt computer files, promising to unlock the files if they are paid a ransom in cryptocurrency like Bitcoin.
Meraki Wi-Fi Statistics
Meraki offers a web-based dashboard that provides Wi-Fi usage statistics for libraries. The dashboard can be accessed by adding authorized users and logging in. It contains reports on proximity, engagement, and loyalty that show the number of connected devices, visitors, and how frequently visitors return to the network. All report data can be downloaded directly into spreadsheets for further analysis. Libraries should contact their NEKLS representative for help accessing their Meraki dashboard and wireless usage statistics.
NEKLS LAN Initiative
The NEKLS LAN Initiative aims to improve library networks across the region. Currently libraries have diverse hardware that is difficult to manage. NEKLS has relied on open source solutions but is considering moving to enterprise solutions for better support, security, and documentation. They also need to start collecting WiFi usage statistics for the state and have unused E-rate funds available for network upgrades. Next steps include contacting NEKLS for help applying those funds through the E-rate program to implement a new regional network infrastructure.
TSCPL: Library of the Year

Artificial Intelligence for XMLDevelopment
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. The discussion will extend to how AI can be used to transform XML content. In particular, the focus will be on the use of AI XPath extension functions in XSLT, Schematron, Schematron Quick Fixes, or for XML content refactoring.

This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
