Environments play an important role in
determining our physical and mental
capacity across a person’s life course
and into older age and also how well we
adjust to loss of function and other
forms of adversity that we may
experience at different stages of life, and
in particular in later years. Both older
people and the environments in which
they live are diverse, dynamic and
changing. In interaction with each other,
they hold incredible potential for
enabling or constraining healthy ageing.

Ageing : a universal natural process
Ageing isn’t something that happens to us in the second half
of our life: it’s a lifelong process
We age from the moment we are born. In this sense, ageing
is another word for living
Old age is therefore neutral, neither good nor bad
12. 12
Ageism
Ageism refers to how we think
(stereotypes), feel (prejudice) and act
(discrimination) towards others or
ourselves based on age
(WHO Definition)

How the deployment of SHAFE in Europe is a lever for
greater inclusion of older people?
Accessibility : Age-friendly environments,
notably accessibility, is a cornerstone to enable
older people doing what they value most.
Changing the narrative : bring everyone on
board.
Investing in age-friendly environments is key to
enhance autonomy and independence.
SHAFE is a lever to access services and
information and foster participation of older
persons in society.

URBANAGE is a European Horizon 2020 project that investigates how
digital technology can address the needs of older people in the urban
environment.

18. “ As long as we start from engaging older people, understanding what is
meaningful to them, and involving them throughout the process, we will most
likely foster all the benefits of technology to make the world a better place to
age for the generations of today and tomorrow”.

Healthy Ageing Unit, World Health Organization (WHO)

FLANDERS PILOT CASE - GREEN COMFORT INDEX MAP
WHAT?
• Quantify green & comfortable zones in the city for older
adults - using DT technology
• Using parameters relevant to older adults:
• Health impact (air quality, noise pollution, heat stress and
shadow impact)
• Green & blue infrastructure (ex. trees, parks - fountains, ponds,
waterfronts)
• Street furniture (ex. benches, tables, public toilets, streetlights,
drinking fountains)
• Accessibility & reachability (ex. substrate, quality sidewalk,
reachability by public transport)
Formula -> 1 score per surface unit, PD, colour scale 1-5

FLANDERS PILOT - GREEN COMFORT INDEX MPA
FOR WHOM?
• 3 target groups :
• Older citizens: find green & comfortable spots, improve
GCM by feedback, suggest new infrastructure.
• Experts: improve GCM by feedback, make simulations,
design scenarios & present to public
• Policy makers: best locations new infrastructure, where is
green comfort lacking? Where to improve
accessibility/reachability for high comfort zones?
