A web search engine has three basic components: a web crawler that browses websites in an automated way, storing information from websites in a database; a database containing huge amounts of web resources; and a search interface that allows users to search through the database and find information from the web. The first search engine was Archie, created in 1990, followed by other early search engines like Excite, Yahoo, and WebCrawler, with Google now being the most widely used search engine.
