commitment to heritage preservation in 2013.
RECREATION: Hiking, fishing, swimming, golfing, paddling and sailing are popular in
summer.Winter pursuits include snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing and skating. Don’t miss
our four waterfalls: Inglis Falls, Jones Falls, Weaver’s Creek Falls and Indian Falls. Indoor
fitness facilities also available.
SPORTS: Junior “A” OHL hockey (the Owen Sound Attack), a 10-day annual salmon derby
and softball, lacrosse, hockey and soccer tournaments take place here.

Life in the City:
Downtown Owen Sound
A
historic port city with many urban amenities, Owen Sound has
retained its small-town charm over the years. The downtown
is distinguished by heritage architecture, wide, leafy sidewalks
and independently owned shops and boutiques. Free WiFi is widely
available, or you can catch up on email at the Owen Sound Library.
The city offers book stores and bike shops, cafes and restaurants,
plus retailers specializing in everything from high-end baby gear and
kitchenware to home décor and photo equipment. Many stores are
closed on Sundays.
Free parking is offered on 2nd Avenue East for up to two hours.
GETTING AROUND
Owen Sound is divided by the Sydenham River and harbour, and all
points are labelled east or west in relation to that. The avenues run
north and south and the streets run east and west.
Taxis are plentiful, and city buses run Monday to

WHERE TO EAT
The city has something for almost every
appetite and budget, from intimate, fine dining
establishments to family restaurants and cafes.
Many offer live music on weekends.

Saturday mornings are humming at the Owen Sound Farmers’
Market, one of the oldest in Ontario. Join the locals as they flock
here for fresh Georgian Bay fish, fruits and vegetables, maple
syrup, meats, artisan breads and pastries. Enjoy preserves of every
description and breakfast hot off the grill with locally roasted
coffee. Buskers entertain while patrons linger, finding everything
from hand-made woollens, soaps, candles and pottery to greeting
cards, leather mittens and moccasins. Open year-round, 7:00 a.m.

HERITAGE WALKING TOURS
Explore Owen Sound’s history on foot,
discovering “Salvation Corners” and
“Damnation Corners,” a former U.S.
Consulate, the province’s first fish ladder
and the birthplace of the Women’s
Christian Temperance Union. Learn why

TOM THOMSON ART GALLERY
The TOM is a national cultural attraction
with a top-notch program of contemporary
and historical exhibitions, lectures, classes,
films, concerts and workshops. It houses
a nationally significant collection of Tom
Thomson’s work and artifacts, shedding
light on the inspiration behind the Group of
Seven. The Tom Thomson Experience is an

THE ROXY THEATRE
The Roxy Theatre is the premier regional
destination for live entertainment. The 400-
seat former opera house, owned and operated
by the Owen Sound Little Theatre, includes a

GEORGIAN BAY SYMPHONY
The symphony presents numerous concerts
each year and also supports an award-winning

Downtown art spaces aside from the TOM
include Gallery DeBoer, the Santa Fe Gallery
and the 40-member Artists’ Co-op, which
displays a range of mediums and styles, from

& RAIL MUSEUM
Travel back in time to Owen Sound’s industrial
past when the city was a thriving port and
“Gateway to the West.” Housed in a former
Canadian National railway station on the
waterfront, the museum features artifacts,
models and archival photos. Visitors can
board a restored caboose and view the

BLACK HERITAGE
Owen Sound was the last stop on the
Underground Railroad, a route taken by slaves
fleeing the United States during the 1800s.
It is now home to the oldest emancipation
festival in North America, currently celebrating

n Owen Sound, you are never far from water – rivers and waterfalls, quiet bays and beaches,
and the harbour that is the city’s namesake. Pick your passion and dive in for some great
boating, fishing, swimming, or salmon watching. Be sure to visit at least one waterfall before
you leave!
ANGLING
Owen Sound is a magnet for serious anglers
and novices. Challenge your skills with
Chinook salmon and rainbow, lake or brown
trout. You can eat what you catch here. The
highlight of the fishing season is the 10-day
Salmon Spectacular in late August. The event
attracts about 5,000 anglers and their families,
who compete for thousands of dollars worth
of prizes in salmon and trout categories.
Don’t have a boat? You can fish off the
harbour wall for salmon and trout in late
summer and fall. Catch these beauties in the
evening and throughout the night until early
morning. Ice fishing is also popular when the
bay freezes over. Head to Watson’s Tackle for
supplies.
BOATING
Owen Sound’s bay and harbour are natural
ports of call for recreational boaters. The city
has public boat launches on each side of the
harbour and the west side launch has a coffee
shop, live bait and tackle and a fish cleaning
station.There is also a floating dock for visiting
craft on the east side of the inner harbour.
Georgian Shores Marina offers overnight,
weekly and longer term docking for up to
400 boats plus a full range of marine supplies
and services. It has a licensed mechanic
on site, a fully stocked chandlery, a gas
bar, wireless Internet, marine technicians

Set against a backdrop of stunning fall colours, rivers and waterfalls, the Owen Sound Salmon Tour is a free, fun and
educational adventure for all ages.The self-guided tour brings you up close and personal with the legendary Chinook

Waterfalls of
Grey County
F
eel the rush as sparkling rivers flow over the Niagara Escarpment! The tour covers nine
waterfalls in Grey County, from Durham through the Beaver Valley up to Owen Sound, and
ends at a ninth waterfall in Bruce; Sauble Falls near Lake Huron.The indoor waterfall at the
Grey Roots Museum and Archives makes for a total of 10.Take a few days to complete the tour:

• Hoggs Falls – On the Bruce Trails Falling Water Trail from Flesherton to Eugenia
• Eugenia Falls – One of Ontarios highest at 30 meters, the Spectacular Cuckoo Valley
• Walters Falls – Enjoy the falls, great food and overnight at the Falls Inn
• Inglis Falls – Beautiful cascade waterfall, on a Bruce Trail side trail

• The full duration of the waterfalls tour is 220 km.
• Many of the waterfalls have interpretive signage onsite.

A LITTLE HISTORY
Harrison Park was the passion of a sawmill
owner, John Harrison, who purchased a 150-
acre tract of land with his wife Emma in 1875
that would become known as Harrison’s
Pleasure Grounds. For more than a quarter of
a century, until his death, he worked to turn
the land into a park, creating roads and paths
but preserving its natural state where possible.
When Harrison Park was turned over to the
city a century ago, it was deemed one of the
most beautiful parks in Ontario. Today, it
remains one of the area’s greatest attractions,
retaining the natural beauty and rustic charm
that have drawn generations of people to its
gates.
