HISTORIC HUNTSVILLE DEPOT
320 Church Street, Huntsville, AL 35801 | 256.564.8100 | earlyworks.com
One of the South’s oldest railroad passenger depots and now a lively transportation museum, the Historic Depot served as the local passenger house
and corporate offices for the eastern division headquarters of the Memphis & Charleston Railroad and was used as an active passenger station until
1968. The building is well-preserved and appears much as it did in 1860. Graffiti on three walls of the upper story is a result of the building’s role as a
prison for captured Confederate militia, as a billet for Union troops en route to major battles and as a hospital for the wounded from those battles.

Tours offered seasonally | 256.509.3940 | mischiefandmayhem.biz

on and off, for three years. Spies, Lies and Alibis is a well-researched compilation of stories such as the pro-Union man who nailed an
American flag to his roof and spied on his neighbors; the fate of six brothers who fought for the Confederacy; the Huntsville native who
ordered the first shot fired at Ft. Sumter and many more. Take the Civil War Bones tour through Maple Hill Cemetery and see the grave of
Abraham Lincoln’s brother-in-law; “General J,” a Union officer who fell in love with a local girl and married her; the man whose dramatic
escape from a Union prison was detailed in the secret diary he kept and many more. If something a little lighter sounds more fun, take the

No matter where your tour
leads, you will find tantalizing
cuisine, friendly people,
underground wonders and
sites uniquely Southern.
HUB&SPOKESUGGESTIONS
HUB & SPOKE
Huntsville is a convenient hub for meeting our neighbors in the beautiful North Alabama Mountain Lakes region. Take circle tours that extend
to the west to see the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and Ivy Green, Birthplace of Helen Keller and the Rattlesnake Saloon. Birthplace shrines
honor “father of the blues” W.C. Handy and Olympian Jesse Owens. Sample cheeses recommended by the Food Network and Southern Living
at Belle Chevre Creamery and Humble Heart Farms. Visit Hamilton where potter Jerry Brown creates “ugly jugs” at his studio and explore the
wonders of “The Dismals.” Tour the newly restored home of Fighting Joe Wheeler and the Blue and Gray Museum. Frolic in the nation’s first
wave pool at Decatur’s Point Mallard. Walk down the shaded streets of historic Mooresville and dine at the Limestone Bay Trading Company.
Ride east to Cathedral Caverns and see the world’s largest stalagmite, shop the unique Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, and enjoy
the scenery and extreme adventures of Little River Canyon. Go south for the charming Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman and the magnificent
Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville. The scenic beauty of Lake Guntersville State Park, the covered bridges near Oneonta
and Gadsden’s Noccalula Falls are worth the drive. Head north to the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee and Prichard’s Distillery
in nearby Kelso, Tennessee. Sample Napa Valley and European quality wines at Amber Falls Winery and Cellars and Natchez Hills Winery
and Vineyards in Hampshire, Tennessee.
Customized, multi-city itineraries can be developed to make your tour meet the needs of your group.
