the
Author
Epictetus (c. 50—c. 135) was a Greek Stoic philosopher. He was
born as a slave in Hierapolis, a Greek city in Asia Minor, earned
his freedom after being under Nero's secretary in Rome and
died shortly after his exile by Domitian in northwestern Greece.
During the last years of his life, he established a school of study
based on a curriculum of logic, physics, and ethics, continuing
the Stoic tradition begun by Zeno of Citium four centuries
earlier.

Work
In His The Enchiridion or Handbook of Epictetus, a work
recorded by his student Arrian, a 2nd-century disciple of the
Greek philosopher Epictetus. Arrian focuses his attention
on Epictetus's work applying philosophy to daily life. The
book is thus a manual to show the way to achieve mental
freedom and happiness in all circumstances.

4. Difference between things in our control
and things outside of our control.
Things in our control
The things in our control are the power to make
decisions and control according to what we want to
control. For example;
Opinion: like happiness is enough in the absence of
negative emotions.
Desire: I want to live happily.
Aversion: reluctant to admit mistakes, defeat.

5. The things outside of our control are things that occur
naturally, it cannot be denied, which cannot be
controlled by us. For Example : death, disease,
condition, other people feelings, property.

6. Why (and how) is death not to be feared?
According to Epictetus
Epictetus says that person who is afraid of death is the one
who has confused objects of fear with objects of confidence.
Because of they are afraid of death, in fact it is outside the
providence of their moral purpose. Where as they are
confident about the things which are inside the
providence of their moral purpose and by this they mix
up the objects of caution and confidence. However; This
idea is similar to Socrates’ ideas on death in Phaedo.
According to Epictetus death is a natural thing and so there is
no point to be afraid of it.

7. Does the essence of goodness consist of things
in our control?
Yes, the essence of goodness consists of things that are within
our control because it is also from us that determines how we
think and behave. usually we can do good because of our
background and realize that all beings have the same right to
do and feel good.
