Latindex is a regional cooperative online information system for scholarly journals from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal. It was created in 1995 and currently includes over 23,000 entries in its directory and over 7,700 entries in its catalog. Latindex also links to over 6,000 electronic journals. As electronic publishing has increased, Latindex has taken on new tasks like establishing quality standards for electronic journals and providing training to journal editors on electronic publishing. Many Latin American countries are well represented in open access journal directories like DOAJ. Regional directories like Latindex and repositories like SciELO and RedALyC have helped support the development of journals in Latin America and the Caribbean.

New tasks/challenges for Latindex:
1: To introduce norms and editorial quality parameters for electronic journals
2: To support and train journal editors in the various aspects of electronic publishing.

Six countries from Ibero America were among the first 20 countries registered in DOAJ as of December 2011: Brazil, Spain, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, representing 21% (1.553 out of 7.369) of the total Directory.

8. Open Access in Latin America
AL&C tiene una presencia fuerte en repositorios internacionales y regionales de revistas de acceso abierto, lo cual aumenta la visibilidad de las revistas de la región y la posibilidad de desarrollar redes académicas de colaboración.

10. Free or open access?
•In Mexico 84 % of the journal sites are free (libre y gratuito), but only 40% declare themselves OA.
•In LA&C the figures vary between 51% and 98% according to the definition.
•The ‘free-access’ journals manage various levels of restriction on the use of the contents (derechos reservados).
