Over half of humanity lives in areas with severe water stress and 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, resulting in 1.8 million child deaths from diarrhea each year. The global population is growing by 80 million per year, increasing water demand by 64 billion cubic meters annually, and by 2030 global water demand may exceed supply by 4%. Agriculture accounts for 70% of global water consumption compared to 20% for industry and 10% for domestic use, so more efficient water use is necessary to address these growing issues as the world's population increases.
