WASTE MANAGEMENT
SOLUTIONS INDIA
Integrated waste management solutions
Current situation
 The most practiced solution for waste
processing is dumping (on dumpsites)
 MSW, animal waste, hospital waste, C&D..all
finds its way to the many dumpsites all over
India
 Various cities are implementing segregating at
source, with various success rates
Common practice In India
Animal Waste
Organic
MSW (mixed)
Building
Materials
Hospital Waste
Dumpsite
Data driven, tech driven
 Every city has a unique waste profile
 It all starts with analyzing the quantity, quality,
location, seasonality, scatter pattern of the
various streams at hand
 A data driven approach will allow better
decision making when deciding on
technology. A holistic approach is required
 Incentives to be focus on “processing” not
“dumping”

Less gate fee More Value
No false expectations
 100% waste processing is not (yet) feasible.
80-90% is: scientific landfilling will still be
required (but a whole lot less, for less
dangerous material!)
 100% segregation at source is not possible.
Not in the West. And especially not within a
short time span in India (as per targets of
municipalities)
 Sales of commodities will not cover cost of
waste management at current market rates:
government incentives are still required
The right incentive (support
prices)
Compost
CNG/Powe
r
Recyclable
s
 2000-3000 INR per kg
 PPA: 9-12 INR/kwh
 CNG: 60 INR/kg
 Minor revenue stream
Quick note on CNG
 95% bio-gas is not sellable as auto-CNG due
to license restrictions
 CNG prices are linked to LPG prices which are
subsidized
 Market fluctuations increase risk of investment
 Hence power is a more stable alternative from
an investment perspective. It is less efficient
however!
Additional incentives
 Land
 Processing fee (pre-processing activities)
 Solution for 10-15% inerts in any integrated
waste management solution (land fills for
example)
