11th February 2012.
The session at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine) was dedicated to the President’s Day holiday in the USA. We decided to start the discussion with a slide show about the city of Washington – the capital of the USA. The club members who have been to Washington city (Valentina and Svitlana) felt rather nostalgic and missed the positive emotions of their trips to the USA.
The next activity was reading and translation of an article about the Presidential foods. We have learned a lot of fun facts about the likes and dislikes of famous Presidents and learned many idiomatic phrases. Our American friend Mr. Battilega was kind enough to explain a lot of difficult expressions and terms during the session.
To memorize the names of the USA presidents we offered a search word puzzle to the club members. They have formed teams and tried to complete the puzzle in 10 minutes. The best score was 17 out of 43 names.
Yana’s team managed to complete a more complicated puzzle in 10 minutes – a “Celebrate USA” Sudoku.
The numerous books presented to the club members aroused a lot of interest. The WOA collection features books on many aspects of American presidency – from the speeches of the US presidents to the first ladies’ backgrounds, from the statistics on elections to the interiors of the White House.

The United States of America (U.S.A. or USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S. or US) or America, is a country primarily located in North America.
The Washington Monument was built to honor the first President of the United States of America George Washington. The Washington Monument dominates the Capital City skyline as a symbolic tribute to George Washington's military leadership during the American Revolution.
The Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine) presented a slide presentation “Kobzar’s Testament Riddle” that offered a new approach to the background of the classical poem “My Testament”.
The local historian D. Synytsia analyzed the text of the poem and suggested his own interpreting of the facts. According to the researcher Shevchenko wanted to be buried in the vicinity of the modern Dnipropetrovsk city. In the slide show we took a fresh look at the poem’s text and found confirmation to D. Synytsia’s hypothesis. It really seems that after a visit to Ekaterinoslav region and the exploration of the Cossack heritage the poet wanted to be buried on a Scythian mound (“on mohyla”) with a view on the greatest Dnipro river rapid – the Insatiable, aka Roaring. Both objects are located not far from Dnipropetrovsk city. The hypothesis is supported by the original Shevchenko’s painting and the memoirs of the local dwellers about the noise produced by the rapids (before they were submerged in the water reservoir).
The new facts from Kobzar’s biography impressed the group. The kids were thrilled by the Testament’s riddle that caused so much confusion and deprived the city of the nationwide Shevchenko Memorial.
February – March, 2014
«Ira Aldridge - Kobzar’s American Friend» a library events series to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko – the great Ukrainian poet.
The Dnipropetrovsk WOA Centre's an informative slide show was presented to the groups. It reminded the students the basic facts of Shevchenko’s biography with the focus on his talent of a portrait painter. This allowed to introduced to the students the personality of Ira Aldridge who ordered a portrait by Taras Shevchenko.
Ira Aldridge gained fame in the 19th century as one of the most prominent African-American Shakespearian actors and the first American actor to perform in Russia.
Unable to obtain major roles in the United States because of his race, he was forced to emigrate to further his acting career. Arriving in England in 1824, on October 10, 1825, he debuted as the first black actor at London's Royal Coburg Theatre.
In 1858 Aldridge made a tour of Russia and was introduced to Shevchenko in St. Petersburg. The memoirs of the witnesses informed us about the friendly atmosphere set in Shevchenko’s studio during Aldridge’s posing sessions. The painting by L. Picard illustrated the moment of friendly communication between two talented people with sad background of slavery and serfdom.
The unknown fact of friendship between the American and Ukrainian geniuses impressed the audience. The students enriched their vocabulary with new art terms, examined Shevchenko’s paintings and appreciated the art talent of the iconic Ukrainian poet.

The session at Window on America center Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine) was dedicated to the 205th anniversary of the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The club members watched a slide show about the biography and poetic heritage of Longfellow.
The information was illustrated with several You Tube videos:
- about the poet’s memorial house;
- the recitals of popular poems by native speakers,
- a modern rock group performing a song with Longfellow’s lyrics, etc.
Special attention was given to a world known poem by Longfellow – the Hiawatha. We have introduced the translation of the poem by a famous Ukrainian translator Olexander Oles. The Club members had the opportunity to compare the original text with the translation and give tribute to the challenging job of the poetry translators.
To summarize the outcome of the session we have taken a quiz about the poet’s life and work. The score was quite satisfactory – 15 correct answers out of 20 questions.
The topic of Native Americans was further continued by the proposition of an out-of-class activity: the club members were invited to attend a movie theatre and watch a new film “The one who passed through the fire flames”. The movie is about a Ukrainian man who became an Indian tribe chief after the WWII.
