In 1840, Captain William Hobson was appointed governor of New Zealand and given responsibility to negotiate a treaty between Maori and the British Crown to establish British sovereignty. The Treaty of Waitangi was signed on February 6, 1840 in Waitangi. It aimed to stop wars between Maori and the British by having both groups sign to agree to a set of rules, though some Maori were pressed into signing. The treaty helped define rights and relationships between Maori and British settlers in New Zealand and is still significant today.
