Food is any substance that provides nutrients to sustain life and support growth. Food sources form a web, with primary producers like plants and algae at the bottom acquiring energy from sunlight. Herbivores consume primary producers as primary consumers, and carnivores consume herbivores as secondary consumers. Humans are considered apex predators as well as omnivores, obtaining sustenance from plants, animals, and fungi. Cereal grains provide more global food energy than any other crop, with corn, wheat and rice accounting for most grain production worldwide.
