Risk assessment

Sitting at a computer for long periods can strain the spine, wrists, and cause slouching. Taking breaks every hour and using ergonomic equipment can help prevent issues. Computer problems can also cause stress, but breaks will allow stress relief. Long periods of sitting increases obesity and body pain risks, so breaks and proper posture are important. Staring at screens can cause eyestrain headaches, so breaks and looking away are needed. Repeated arm motions increase risk of repetitive strain injuries, so stretching is important. Extended headphone use for work can risk hearing problems, so limiting listening time and keeping volumes low can help.

Enviromental art research

Ben White plans to design an environmental art piece with an apocalyptic theme for his final major project. He will research depictions of post-apocalyptic environments in games like Fallout 3 and Dying Light as well as real-life abandoned places like Chernobyl. Specifically, he will examine the ruined settlements, burnt landscapes, collapsed infrastructure and decaying buildings shown in these sources to inform the dark, grey and destroyed atmosphere of his own artwork.

Production diary

Over the course of 15 weeks, the student worked on their final major project, creating concept art pieces in charcoal and digital formats. They began with research and test drawings, created pieces based on existing works, then moved to original character and environment designs. The student completed 4 final concept art pieces set in rural and urban environments, and finished with an evaluation and blog finalization in the last week.

Evaluation art

Ben White completed an art project using only charcoal as the medium. He found that charcoal fit well with the apocalyptic theme and taught him useful skills like smudging for effect. White also benefited from gaining confidence presenting his ideas to others. He managed his time well, staying on schedule to meet all deadlines and completing his final work in the planned time. The total cost of £651 for the materials was a fair amount for the work produced and time spent. White learned about effectively using charcoal without making the image too dark. His planning ensured the time was used properly to complete the project as planned.
