This document discusses the cultivation of three cereal crops - maize, sorghum, and pearl millet. 2. 1.MAIZE –zea mays
• SCIENTIFIC NAME ;- Zea mays.
• FAMILY;- Poaceae.
• IMPORTANT FEATURES
 Suitable for inter cropping.
 short-duration crop.
 can be grown during kharif, rabi and zaid.
 The milk to early dough stage is
preferred for higher yield and protein.
• VARIETIES ;-African Tall, APFM-8,
Pratap Makka, Chari 6, Ganga-4, J-1006.

3. • SOIL AND CLIMATE ;- well drained deep loams and silt loams
soils. Soil pH 7.5 to 8.5.The range of temperature 9° to 46°C with
optimum around 34°C.
• SOWING TIME ;- june-july or sept-oct or feb-mar.
• SEED RATE ;- 40 to 50 kg seed/ha.
• SPACING ;- 30X10 cm or 60 X 10 cm.
• NUTRIENTS ;- N-15-30 kg/ha P-40-60kg/ha K-40kg/ha.
Zinc sulphate 20kg/ha before planting and 60 to 90 kg
of N when crop is about 50 to 60cm tall.
• IRRIGATION ;- 10 to 12 days of interwal.
• HARVEST:- Harvested at milky stage 60 to 75 days.
• YIELD:- Rainfed 30-40 t/ha. Irrigated 40-50 t/ha.

4. 2.SORGHUM – Sorghum bicolar

• FAMILY;- Poaceae/Gramineae.
• IMPORTANT FEATURES.
 Resistant to drought.
 can grow well under less fertile soils.
 crop contains toxin hydrogen cyanide (HCN) till 45-50 days.
• VARIETIES.
 Single cut: Pusa Chari-1,Pusa Chari-6,
 Multi-cut: CoFS 29, CoFS 31.
 Dual purpose: SPV 669, K-11;
SSG 988, CSH 24 MF.

5. • SOWING TIME ;- March or july
• SEED RATE ;- Single cut -10kg/ha. Multi cut – 10 to 15 kg/ha
• SPACING ;-30X10 cm
• NUTRIENTS ;- Single cut N:P:K – 75:50:25 Kg/ha.
Multi cut - N:P:K –100:60:30 Kg/ha.50kg of N after every cuttings.
FYM –Rainfed 10t/ha. Irrigated 25t/ha.
• IRRIGATION ;- 15 to 20 days interwals.
• HARVEST;- Single cut: Flowering stage (60-75 days)
Multi-cut: First cutting after 50-55 days and subsequent cutting after
40-45 days.
• YIELD:- Single cut: 35-40 t Multi-cut: 100-150
